images/img-4-1.jpgHigh in the rain forest trees, an orangutan swings from branch to branch. Her son clings to her back, his arms clasped tightly around her neck. Though he’s almost 2 years old, he’s never been away from his mother’s side. During the next few years, he will rarely be out of his mother’s sight. He will stay with her until he is about 8 years old. She will teach him everything he needs to know to live in the rain forest. He will learn what to eat, how to travel, and where to sleep. What his mother can’t teach him is how to survive if the rain forest is destroyed. Many scientists believe that without help, orangutans will become extinct in the wild in the next 10 years.
