    The strange seeds from outer space have been planted in the school greenhouse but as Archie Arbuckle watches over them, he can’t shake the feeling that something is watching over him – something extra-terrestrial.
    Archie’s school has been selected to take part in the Rocket Science experiment, an experiment to grow rocket from seeds that had been on-board the International Space Station. As the experiment continues a series of mysterious events lead Archie to believe his wacky suspicions are right.
    Is Whopsle the first cat ever to be abducted by aliens?
    Has the strange red dust covering the neighbourhood really come from Mars?
    And has Mr Dorrit gone doolally because he’s eaten space rocket?
    The story is based around the Rocket Science Experiment of 2016, which caught the imagination of children across the UK as thousands of schools took part.

    Debbie McKelvey is a journalist and author best known for writing the Space Seed Adventure series. From her background in local newspapers Debbie has seen how often truth, really is stranger than fiction, and loves to use these uncanny stories as a basis for her books. As a child, she found primary school a difficult and deflating experience and so is passionate about creating characters who inspire children to develop self-confidence and flourish. As a 'late bloomer', she relates well to the struggles children face trying to find their identity and for this reason loves to champion the underdog. Despite championing underdogs though, she is in fact herself a cat lover and owner of a cheeky orange tom affectionately named Jasper Carrot and an incredibly lazy, incredibly fluffy, tabby who loves sleeping on top of the fish tank. She likes to try and include at least one cat in each book. When not writing stories, Debbie is usually doing taxi runs for her teenage son, aspiring to be a domestic goddess, and ticking off bucket list goals with her best friend and husband, Kevin.

      Prologue

      A strange mist hung over the glasshouse at the school.

      It wasn’t a swishy, swirling kind of mist – more a heavy, mysterious, wet blanket kind of vapour that was just brooding there like pea soup and it seemed to be slowly swallowing up the greenhouse.

      In its eerie luminous glow little Archie Arbuckle watched, his heart pounding so hard he felt it might explode.

      It was after midnight and he knew he should be at home, in bed, asleep, but not before he had investigated the greenhouse and the ominous fog.

      His shaky legs carried him towards the greenhouse door, but his brain couldn’t quite understand why.

      This brain in Archie’s head, had, after all, come up with several good arguments for getting promptly out of the bizarre situation.

      ‘What if the fog swallows me up and I can’t get out,’ the sometimes intelligent brain suggested.

      ‘Or what if three-fingered, black-eyed beings from another planet are in the greenhouse, using this fog to hide their mysterious activities.

      ‘And what if they abduct me and I never see my mum or dad or Whopsle the cat, or the lovely Molly Millsop ever again.’

      ‘Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!’

      Archie’s brain had decided it wanted to escape from his skull and run back home, but all these scary thoughts Archie was having were to no avail for he had already decided – HE WAS GOING IN!

      His cold hand touched the wet, slimy glass and the greenhouse door scraped as he pushed it open.

      He stepped inside where the air seemed even colder and the mist against the panes seemed even more luminous. He felt like he was in some kind of horror movie.

      His eyes scanned around the greenhouse - past the jumble of empty flower pots, past the gardening tools and watering can - and finally settled in the far corner, where the carefully tended soil trays were.

      And that’s when he saw it - just as he’d feared!

      It was dim, but there was no mistaking it!

      There, in the tray of carefully tended soil, just about poking through - were lettuces!!!

      Actually - to be more accurate, it was in fact rocket, but as far as Archie was concerned they were all just salad leaves anyway.
