Chapter 1. The Yellow Swoosh.
TK was still giggling, and Ash’s hand was still numb. His cheek was also numb, and the dribble stain on his shirt was embarrassingly obvious.
Shame,
said TK trying hard not to smile. You fell asleep, and now your hand is numb.
And so is my cheek,
said Ash dryly as he massaged his cheek. He was also struggling to cope with his vivid dream. He felt hollow, and overawed. Wow,
he murmured. What a dream.
You had a dream?
Shoo,
said Ash rubbing his hand. Yes. It was almost real.
Can you remember it?
asked TK inquisitively.
It’s coming back to me,
said Ash as he continued massaging his cheek.
The dream ... or your cheek?
Both,
said Ash. The numbness was being replaced by pins and needles. He didn’t like it when folks made fun of him.
Let me get you a V8 – that will perk you up.
Indeed, the V8 juice did perk Ash up. And soon his brain started up as well.
That dream was crazy,
said Ash running his fingers through his hair.
TK, having managed to lose his giggles in the kitchen, resumed his Buddha like pose in his arm chair. He too cradled a fresh V8 juice in his hands, and earnestly studied Ash.
Can you remember your dream?
I think so,
said Ash. I was riding the Yellow Swoosh – the one from your painting. Then a woman appeared.
Can you remember her name?
No,
said Ash shaking his head slowly. I think she was trying to tell me I had to plug the swoosh into something.
Destiny was present, and hoping that her emissary Ash, could remember his dream. She was in control of events and anxious for Ash get a move along with his awakening. The environment, she knew, needed this to happen soon. But she need not have worried, TK had matters firmly in-hand and was ushering Ash along as fast as he could.
There was a funny looking plug at the end of the Yellow Swoosh.
Oh,
said TK looking surprized. What did the plug look like?
It was strange,
said Ash massaging his hand. It was as if the Yellow Swoosh was like an extension lead – you know, a power cable. And the plug on the end had three horizontal bars. I have never seen a plug like that.
That doesn’t sound like a normal plug.
No,
agreed Ash. I wonder what it would plug in to?
Well,
said TK pondered Ash’s dream. It sounds like you need to plug it into something. Pity you can’t remember your dream.
Only vaguely. The plug was very strange. And the Yellow Swoosh kept on bucking widely. I was trying to ride it … like a rodeo rider. It was very strange.
Ash looked at TK for help – hoping TK would be able to explain his dream.
TK swirled his glass and examined the ice blocks while he was thinking. When the thought arrived he started at the beginning, Big Bang, atoms, electrons, molecules, Planet Earth, water, first life, worm brain, dinosaur brain, monkey brain, monkey-brain plus, pyramid-shaped societies – and now we are an interstellar species.
Ash nodded, acknowledging the history.
And in the absence of another possibility, you might accept that that is the Yellow Swoosh.
Hmmm …,
ruminated Ash. That sounds like a possibility.
And the soul’s Eight Station journey through the afterlife could be the person riding the Yellow Swoosh.
Ash recalled the soul’s possible afterlife trajectory - white light, first aid station, life contract, life review, possible detour, sanatorium, elders, library, airport, river of unthinking, rebirth. That could be a possibility. But I’m not sure.
TK took a spit of hisV8 juice. The cool sweet juice bit into his stomach lining. I think it’s the soul energy riding the Yellow Swoosh?
Could be,
said Ash.
TK twirled his glass -making the ice blocks clink. He thought for a while longer. I wonder what you have to plug it into. It did have a strange plug. Maybe you need to plug it into the creation energy.
Ash looked blank.
You know … the energy that guided evolution.
Good point,
replied Ash. That sounds like a possibility.
TK took a sip of his juice. Then he swirled his glass again, and examined the ice blocks as if he were reading them. So, you do the reincarnation trip, visiting all eight stations. Then you are reborn into a new body. Yes – it does sound as if it’s the soul energy riding the Yellow Swoosh. Then,
said TK taking a sip of his juice, … then you experience your individuation event, face your ‘I don’t belong’ and your ‘something’s wrong here’ crisis. And once you have faced all these events you can be considered ‘primed’ - and ready for adulthood. Then you totter off into life and try to raise a family, pay your taxes. You will face umpteen hurdles, and hope you reach your retirement. It seems as if life is a struggle.
It is not easy,
said Ash sighing. I wish it were easier.
I think that is what your dream is about.
Do you mean it can make life easier? How?
Well …,
said TK thinking. I think you must find out what the three prongs are, and I suppose, what you need to plug them into.
Ash pondered the comment. He wasn’t sure. And he was exhausted from his experiences. He needed a break, time off. And TK suggestions left him feeling uneasy. He wanted to stay home and recover.
Remember when your journey began,
said TK leaning forward and wiggling into a more comfortable position, and you were seeking proof of that energy that came into being shortly after the Big Bang. This energy has either guided, or miraculously influenced evolution in such a manner, that it has delivered you to this incredible moment in time.
What is incredible about this moment?
The question caught TK by surprize, and he needed a moment to compose his thoughts. Well … err, after 14.5 billion years of evolution you have arrived – you are the custodian of the most powerful machine in the known universe. But you have lost your link to anima. And then you have a dream in which you find yourself riding a Yellow Swoosh. It has an oddly shaped plug at the end of it. And you are trying to find out what to plug it into.
That sounds correct. Does this mean another journey?
Well … how else does one find an answer?
Ash conceded the point.
And I suppose you want proof as well?
That does make accepting this theory of yours much easier.
Then it’s time to saddle up.
But I haven’t dismounted yet.
Good point,
said TK smiling. He fetched a note pad and his little black book. He paged through it for a while. Then he stopped and jotted down some numbers. Then he tore off the sheet of paper and handed it to Ash. Ash studied it. It had two phone numbers. Ash scrutinized the names - Dr Wellbeloved, and Mr Cayce.
When should I start?
asked Ash.
Now.
Why?
Because time waits for no-one.
Chapter 2. Dr Wellbeloved
Not wanting to be caught in the morning rush hour Ash caught the train. And as the train glided past the drivers stuck in long queues of traffic he congratulated himself. He had made a wise decision.
He alighted at the Observatory Station and walked up the narrow streets towards Groote Schuur Hospital. As the name suggested, the hospital had once been the sight of a large grain storage facility. But time had caught up with the silo, and it had been demolished to make way for a large hospital – which was constructed on the site. This hospital became the venue for the world’s first heart transplant. Destiny was pleased with this location because it was her emissary’s job to give the world a transplant. A mind transplant.
Though his awakening lay in the not too distant future Ash had no idea about her plans for him.
As he was ahead of schedule he decided to stop for a coffee. He hoped to find a good cappuccino and an almond croissant. He turned left into the high street and headed for the famous 1920’s New York style eatery Obz Café. It was said to be the bohemian HQ of Cape Town, which had recently added a Cabaret Voltaire styled theatre onto it. Once it had been bombed, but the owner had ignored the wreckage, put on Louis Armstrong’s song ‘What a Wonderful World’, and continued trading.
Ash was relieved to find it open - and busy. The sun streaming in through its large windows. A waitress showed him to a table in the sun. He ordered a cappuccino.
Would you have any almond croissants?
The waitress looked across the restaurant and smiled. You’re in luck – there’s one left.
The coffee and croissant arrived at the same time. Ash studied the croissant. It seemed familiar. It was large and puffy, coated in icing sugar and drizzled with toasted almonds.
That looks like an Olympia Bakery almond croissant,
said Ash.
It was delivered fresh at 7 this morning,
said the waitress with a pleasant smile.
I should be that lucky,
chuckled Ash. He took a sachet of sugar and poured the sugar onto the foam. The waitress studied him curiously. Ash was happy - the foam supported the sugar. Then he poured a second sachet onto the foam. It supported that as well.
The foam is good.
The milk is frothed under 65 degrees. Can I get you anything else?
No thanks,
said Ash. This is more than enough heaven for today.
Though invisible Destiny was standing right beside him. She smiled. She knew that Ash’s was about to learn a massive truth.
Ash broke off a corner of the croissant and dunked it into the foam. Then he popped it into his mouth and closed his
