Small Talk - Patrick Angell
Introduction
I want to thank you and congratulate you for purchasing the book, "Small Talk - How to Turn a Small Talk into a Big Success".
If you ask anyone what is the most embarrassing movement in their life, nine out of ten people will tell you a story in which they made a fool of themselves in a social setting, especially in front of people whom they wanted to impress. It is honestly a nerve -wracking experience and highly embarrassing situation.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man is bound to end up sounding comical and nerdy when he tries to sound sophisticated and cool. It is the case with other genders as well. This happens because we try too hard which stimulates your nerves and thus we do not present our best. However, this does not mean that you need to be unprepared for the best interaction in your life. You need to seek a middle ground, a perfect balance between caring too much and not caring at all. Only such a middle stage will allow you to perform your best.
There is a common tendency in everyone to overdramatize any interactions or communications. This is especially true in the case of the introverts and socially awkward people. However, social, personal and business interactions cannot be avoided or postponed for too long. You have to face them someday, and often this pressure of facing these circumstances lead to mistakes. These mistakes seem so gigantic and monstrous that you have a hard time of forgetting it, and by the time you forget a mistake, you commit another one, and the cycle goes on. So how to solve this perpetual and extremely common problem?
In the short term, the best way to counter this problem is by keeping everything in perspective and trying to keep calm. The calmer you are, the better you will perform. However, for a much more substantial solution, you should learn how to make ‘small talk’ and adopt some social skills in your repertoire. Having some social and mingling skills at your disposal all the time will always come in handy. It will change your life for good. It will allow you to perform well in your private as well as professional life. With this, it will allow you to do your best in familiar as well as unfamiliar situations. You will no longer feel awkward, afraid or scared to approach strangers to discuss various issues and air your complaints as well.
Think of your past experiences: getting into an unfamiliar situation is an uncomfortable experience for everyone. Think of it as going down a steep hill. One wrong step and you will tumble down hard, hurting yourself in the process. However, if you have a walking stick while going down, you will not stumble. Small talk and social skills are like walking sticks,
