THE PREGNANCY GAME
Every female has a choice of games. A woman plays the game according to age, class, marital status, education, financial condition.
A college coed might find it altogether appropriate to overtly initiate a sexual relationship. An older woman might prefer to encourage the man subtly; and a wealthy woman might take to being seen at the best places and so indicate her availability. But no matter what the ploy, the long and even the short-range aim is precisely the same: to bed a man, either in or out of marriage.
If the goal is to take a man to bed, then does it matter whether or not a man knows the rules?
It just isn't so that every woman's ultimate goal is marriage. As Janice Glover wrote in Sense and Sensibility for Single Women, 'That old bit about a woman wanting a whole loaf or none when it comes to a man is, in my single judgement, so much malarkey. The truth is that there are a good many single women who would have a hunk of tasty fruit cake which they must share with other women than a whole sponge cake for themselves.1
Although Miss Glover's selection of cake type may have been unfortunate, due to the connotations of 'fruit', what she really means is that not all single women want a guy to say 'I do'. It may be sufficient if he's willing to bed, board, comfort, and caress her.
Most every book ever written about the sex habits of single girls in all walks of life contributes to the games women play. Although men are slowly catching up, there is no doubt that women are the most expert at sexual gamesmanship.
Women's games are played with many props: false eyebrows, false eyelashes, false breasts, false fingernails, and even false bottoms. Most American men expect these artificial accessories.
The oldest game, played by women around the world, can be identified simply by the statement, 'I'm pregnant'
The Pregnancy Game is played by the amateur lover, the professional man seeker, the factory worker, and the college girl, and by the young and the old (well, not too old). The Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry in Sex and the College Student puts it this way, 'A girl is more likely to expose herself to pregnancy if she generally tends to live out unconscious wishes in an impulsive manner.'
A chick who wants to make the scene and catch a guy for good might be willing to make him think she forgot to take her pill. With contraception left more and more to the girl, she finds herself in the position of controlling the rules of The Pregnancy Game.
How would a guy charged with being the errant father know for sure? How can he tell whether or not he is the one really responsible? Can he duck out morally, legally or socially? If he does marry her and she turns out not to be pregnant how deep will he be into this marriage? The choices suggested by The Pregnancy Game have deeper roots than some of the other games where the man's only struggle is to get out. When The Pregnancy Game is successful the girl can always say after the wedding: the doctor made a mistake, she miscalculated or missarried. But he's caught. She can, of course, easily deny she ever told him she was pregnant, to avoid a possible annulment.
A well-heeled knowledgeable fellow can hand the girl some cash and tell her to find a willing doctor. Some others might go on the offensive and play The Counter Pregnancy Game. That's what Ronald K. did. (His name as well as the others referred to in this and other chapters have been changed).
Ronald was appearing in a popular summer stock theatre. It was his first year with the company but he had already built a reputation as a mysterious, enigmatic character. It was rumored that he had a winter home in the south of France. Dark and handsome and in his late twenties, it was also whispered that he was a deposed Egyptian prince, a descendant of a Turkish emperor and/or the son of a mysterious English nobleman. In truth he had been born of White Russians who had escaped after the revolution. He had an independent private income and merely enjoyed summer theatre as a diversion.
Ronald's cosmopolitan manner, his continental accent, his good looks and apparent affluence made it easy for him to attract women, and he became a target for the younger girls who made up the company.
One young girl, who told herself that she was going to land Ronald, was spending her first summer with the company, on vacation from college. Lisa, just turned twenty, came from a small southern town outside of Atlanta. She was used to encouraging young men with a swish of her backside or a French kiss. She knew just how far to take a young man before jumping out of the car and rushing into her house. On occasion she allowed herself to spend a night discreetly. She knew how to make a boy feel like a man; she knew where to put her mouth, how to grind her thighs into his groin; hold back so that he would come panting after her. She did these things to satisfy her own ego as well as inflame her recurrent hunger. But what she really wanted was for someone to take her to all the romantic places of the world she had read about. She wanted someone with unlimited wealth. Lisa had fantasised that she would meet a prince someday. When she met Ronald she knew he was the man. The problem was, of course, how to get him.
He expressed no interest in her even when she passed him in the hall, sideways, allowing her full breasted figure to brush up against his chest; or when she stumbled against him in a scene they were playing together on the stage.
Bab's plan was to have Ronald want her and get her but not right away, not with the appearance of being an easy mark. She didn't want a casual affair. Lisa was looking for a permanent alliance, not a part-time dalliance.
One Sunday afternoon during the second week in June, with nearly three months of the season left, Lisa decided to act. If she were ever to get her game started it would have to begin at once.
Although she had never had trouble at college, Lisa had difficulty getting started now. At college a pair of tight slacks that barely made it over her round, soft bottom, a blouse twisted and knotted just below her burgeoning breasts, her brown gold hair loosely flowing over her slightly made-up eyes, moist lipstick that maintained a petulant look and dabs of perfume anointing the proper parts of her anatomy had always been sufficient weapons. But Ronald seemed immune. She wanted him to want her sexually up to the point where she could turn him off. Then it would be easy to get him to propose. That would be the final entrapment.
As they walked in a small park for the first time together, he took her hand. She thought, this is the beginning. She pulled him closer to her, forcing him to bend his arm under her bosom.
'You have such nice, white skin.' He patted her hand. 'You haven't done a hard day's work m your life.'
She leaned her head on his shoulder. 'I really haven't had to.'
Ronald motioned for them to sit under a tree, their backs leaning against the trunk.
They sat quietly for a moment and then Lisa twisted her body so she was able to lay her head in his lap. She held her fingers over his mouth. 'I don't want you to think of anything.'
'Not even you?' he asked. In a sense he was playing the first part of a game he easily recognised. Ronald had nothing to lose. He encouraged her to go on.
She pulled his head down to hers, so that his lips touched hers, tickled the inside of his mouth with her tongue. She knew that prince or fraud, son of an emperor or son of a carpenter ~ he was a man and he would have to respond.
Ronald caressed her breasts, bare under the knotted blouse, allowing his hands to reach down and round her back, cup ping the cool buttocks. At that moment Lisa shattered his mood, pulled herself away and got up.
'Must you go?' he asked almost indifferently.
Playing scene two of the game, she said, 'I have a part to rehearse.' Then she ran off.
Ronald called after her, loud enough for Lisa to hear, 'Bitch.' Lisa heard and laughed because now she felt he would pursue her. She didn't have long to wait.
That night, after the evening performance, Ronald directed her to his room. There were no preliminaries. Although she would have preferred to have him tell her he loved her, that wasn't a necessary part of the game. In allowing Ronald to win the first encounter she would she figured win the final battle.
In bed Ronald was everything she had hoped. He treated her gently, caressing her softly, stroking her into expectation, then backing away as she murmured to have him come to her quickly. He wouldn't and the murmur changed to a cry.
Then he answered her cry. She had never felt the surge of womanhood as she did that night.
The next day she avoided Ronald. This was the accessary and difficult next stage. Finally she told him, 'Ronald. I never should have. It was all my fault. I never should have allowed it to happen.'
She didn't tell him that this was the first time, not expecting him to believe that.
It was important for him to think that her personal shame was an excuse to stay away. It was difficult for her. He found other women as weeks went on. Lisa ached to have him be with her. But she waited until the second week in August for the next stage.
She picked an evening when they could be alone together. He invited her to his room. Ronald sat on the edge of the bed waiting for her to join him. Instead she stood and nervously
