Image517.JPGWhy I wrote this book
A friend of mine asked me to recommend a basic basketball book for his nine-year-old grandson. I said, Give me a day or so to do some research.
I went online and found numerous books supposedly covering basketball fundamentals for kids. However, most books on the market were targeted to the more mature teenage audience—not for a child just learning how to play the game.
I chose a few potential books geared for the beginner and delved a little deeper into the material covered. I was disappointed with both their content and their presentation. They were either infantile in their approach or so complex that an experienced basketball coach would have a hard time understanding what they were saying.
I then remembered that in 1994, when I was the owner/director of a sleep-away basketball camp, I produced a basic basketball handbook that I gave out to campers attending my summer camp. I rummaged through my stored boxes and found a copy. I reviewed my handbook and concluded that it would be a good beginners’ book. I gave it to my friend who then presented it to his grandson.
A few days later, my friend, who is very knowledgeable about the game, told me that his grandson loved the book so much that he even took it to bed with him, falling asleep while reading it.
I gave the handbook to others with kids and received similar reviews. Many people suggested and encouraged me to publish my handbook.
After many rewrites and additions Bball basics took shape.
Bball basics presents a step-by-step, easy-to-read, fun way to teach the fundamentals of the game of basketball.
Enjoy! Bobby Kaplan

CHAPTER 1 Getting Started in Bball
Let’s go!
Basketball is a fast-moving game played by over five hundred million people all over the world. Basketball combines your individual skills—how well you play—with the skills of your teammates. All members of the team must work together for one common goal. On offense, when your team has the ball, means doing everything together to help score baskets. On defense, when the other team has the ball, means doing everything together to stop the opposing team from scoring.
Basketball may seem like
