Where Do Countries Stand?
MANY AMERICANS, FOLLOWING Donald Trump, think that America is not great. They seem to want more and better jobs, fewer immigrants, better and cheaper health care, lower taxes, and a return to that old time religion.
It doesn’t seem to matter much about the leader’s personal morality, as long as he says he is against abortions and Muslims.
Donald Trump said he would like to see more Norwegians immigrate to America. But his demeanor seems to be dissuading them from coming. U.S. universities were once the preferred destinations for college educations for Nordmen.
This is no longer true. Modern young Vikings are turning to other countries for their tertiary schooling.
The Donald,
as many other leaders, sees Norway as a rather special country. What is it that makes it special. Let’s take a look! Let’s also look at a few critical areas, like pensions and taxes, and see if we can make a few moves toward being better.
While Norway will be our key interest, some other countries have enacted some laudable programs. But ironically none of their national leaders are advocating building walls along their borders or blaming Barack Obama for their real or imagined past mistakes.
INTRODUCTION
Everybody seems to love Norway. Bernie Sanders wants to develop America along the same lines as Scandinavia, and Trump wants more Norwegians to emigrate to the United States. Although I wonder if The Donald
would be comfortable with the gender equality he would find here and if he would be ready to have Americans pay 60% more in taxes (from 26% to 42%) just to be in a happier country, and one that was low on corruption and rated as the best democracy in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
The U.S. is rated the 21st best democracy. No wonder Trump keeps harping on the idea of making America great again. But first he has to pass Uruguay at number 18 and Canada at number 6 on his way to tying with Norway as the world’s best democracy!
Transparency International ranked 180 countries on their scale of corruption. Norway was ranked as the third least corrupt and U.S. the 16th least corrupt.
On the other hand, the U.S. has been ranked sixth on the ease of doing business scale of the World Bank. Norway ranked eighth. New Zealand was first. (New Zealand is also the 6th happiest country and the fourth best democracy, but its total taxes are 37%!)
But there may be other factors than business and taxes. Did you know that Norway has some of the best chefs in the world? The Bocuse d'Or, called the Olympics of gastronomic cooking, was inaugurated in 1987 and is held biennially. Norway has won more medals than any other country—5 golds, 3 silvers, and 2 bronzes. The U.S. has one gold and one silver. By comparison, France has 7 golds and one each of silver and bronze. Belgium, another capitol of cuisine has no golds, but three each of silver and bronze. And who would have guessed that two years ago a cheese from Norway was ranked as the best in the world? What a wily lot these socialists!
But back to money. Are Americans ready to pay more taxes to be happier, to have a more effective democracy, to have less corruption, and no national debt? Every American now owes almost $70,000 on the national debt. Americans are continually fooled when the government gives them tax breaks—then borrows money to fund them. Of course, we then pay interest annually on that national debt. Boy, are we smart!
