      He came home to find Annette sitting at the kitchen table with her head in her hands. A spilled beer lay beside her elbow, dripping onto the floor. He heard their two-year-old crying in the back room and their twelve-year-old blasting music upstairs.

      Honey, what’s the matter? asked George. He set his briefcase on the chair and put his phone on the counter. He reached out and gently pulled her hands from her face.

      His wife glared at him through a web of matted blonde hair, eyes bloodshot from tears and booze What’s the matter? she parroted. What do you think’s the matter?

      Well, I can hear Emma crying, for one thing.

      Yeah, she probably needs a change.

      I’ll go change her, he said.

      It can wait. She’s not choking, George.

      Annette’s lips tightened as she spoke, and her eyes stayed focused on his. George loosened his tie, then put his hands up in front of him.

      Okay, I can see you’re stressed out.

      You bet I’m stressed out, she said.

      All right, listen, I just want to make sure Emma’s okay. She’s two, just for safety’s sake, then we can talk.

      How about I’ll check on Emma and you can do some damn dishes, she said.

      George glanced at the steel sink in the center of their island kitchen. It was crammed with crusty pots and plates.

      That’s a lot of dishes. Is that since yesterday? Did you have a dinner party while I was at work? He attempted a smile and chuckle, but her glare cut it short.

      "It’s called living, George. It’s called taking care of two kids and living."

      I just mean, Bobby eats lunch at school, Emma eats at daycare.

      I didn’t sign her up for the meals, she said. The food’s expensive and disgusting. My check barely covers that bill as it is.

      Then stay home, he said.

      No. It’s too tight that way, she said. That little extra I make counts, you know.

      I never said it didn’t, he said. I’m just saying we could get by. I had two sales today, got two new clients.

      Oooh, that’s great, you deserve a medal. Annette twirled her beer-dampened finger in the air.

      How many drinks have you had? he asked.

      I don’t know, officer, but I’m not driving, I swear.

      Okay, look, he said. I’m going to check on Emma, then I’m going to load the dishwasher, how’s that?

      George turned away. Though his wife was a soggy mess,
