Malcolm Graham watched nervously as the cold water mixed with the blood, forming a morose maroon concoction as it spiraled down the drain. Another coughing fit. They came more frequently these days. The blood started a few days ago.
He knew he shouldn’t have been at the bar drinking his troubles away. He knew he shouldn’t have been smoking. But when the doctors set a timeframe, give you X amount of time to live (three weeks tops in Malcolm’s case), you tend to ask yourself that age old question: what’s the point? In Malcolm’s case, he figured there was no point. Life is shit, and then you die. With three weeks left, he decided it was time to start living for the moment.
Looking into the mirror above the basin as he washed away the remainder of the blood he wanted to cry. He no longer recognized the face staring back. Premature baldness from the radiation he knew would never help. Sunken eyes. Purple bags beneath. A too frail face so malnourished the skin clung tightly to the bones, giving him an almost skeletal appearance. Parched and cracked lips bordering on dehydration; his tongue was almost white, signifying the same. Teeth were missing.
Why me?
Even his voice sounded different. His once smooth, deep voice now sounded raw and raspy.
