    CHAPTER 1

    IN THE BEGINNING

    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1, KJV)

    I remember so vividly my grandmother’s one-story house, which was across a creek on the other side of the railroad tracks.  Everyone in the household worked in order to take care of all of us. 

    Every day, the trains would go by blowing their whistle. The railroad workers would throw bubblegum. When we heard the train whistle, we would all jump up and scream as we ran out the door trying to beat one another to get there first. My cousins and I would race to pick up as many pieces as we could to share with our siblings. Sometimes, the bubble gum would fall into the water and float past us.  Nevertheless, we had enough gum to chew and blow bubbles until all the taste was gone.  I would chew mine and once it became tasteless to the ground it would go.  My cousins all swallowed theirs.  My grandmother said it wasn’t good to swallow too much bubble gum because it would swell your stomach.

    On Saturday evenings, my mom and my aunts would start to prepare Sunday dinner. That way, dinner was always ready after church.  We were given a choice to attend Sunday school or morning service at the small white church with a pot belly stove in the middle of the floor. There were no instruments like in the churches today. But the songs rang out for all to know: My God is a good God and How sweet it is to trust in Jesus.  The preacher would read the Bible, and everyone would follow along as he read. You could tell it was warm because sweat would be running down his face. Nevertheless, as my grandmother would say, "He preached up a
