Remembering blue eyes
The shine
In that gaunt face
Desperate
Large and hoping
A beautiful face
That look;
That frightened look
Cuts into skin
Like a knife had opened
The inner sanctums of a hidden heart.
Not to worry
Nor forget
How could he
Not wish to hold on
To this?
Feelings separate
In his head
eyes like that drag you down
Because he looked too deep
Too often
She was sinking
And he could see his reflection
Falling into
The cavern,
It was an Indian summer
Mysteriously
He should have stayed
He should have looked a little deeper.
Ruthlessly killing
That light,
With a word,
I don’t understand
Come with me
He said no.
Wasn’t strong enough
Wasn’t smart enough
Wasn’t cold enough
Goodbye
Lasting minutes
Days years
She never broke down
Never cried.
She was tough
Loving that was more important than anything else.
She drove away
All her things in the car
He stood watching
The tires kicking up the
Indian summer dust
The evening closing in
Around Monarch butterflies in the air.
He should have
Went with her
He should have followed.
