Scary Echoes:: An Australian Bedtime Story

About this ebook
This little book is quite different from other children’s books. I have combined fact with fiction. The story takes us back to the 1950’s, and focuses on two young boys living on a farm in outback Australia.
This is a story of things that really do go bump in the night. Of a mountain lake and its magical voices, scary voices, a

DISCLAIMER
PLEASE NOTE
During the writing of this story I may have expressed views or opinions that differ from the reader, person or group of people. I have expressed these views or opinions only with the intention of enriching the story line. My views or opinions are not intended to be offensive; and if any offence is ever taken, I most humbly apologise to the reader, person or group of people I may have offended.
In the story itself, I have made reference to several towns, business’s, places, regions and persons. These references are purely fictitious, and do not refer to any existing town, business, place, region or person here in Australia or in any other country.
I have included in the story line of this little book references to the Australian Aboriginal people. I have done this to acknowledge Aboriginal connections to this land. And to my knowledge, these references are purely fiction and don’t reflect Aboriginal law or legend.
No creature or thing has been killed or injured during the writing of this story, except perhaps the English language and a little punctuation?
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT
This little story takes us back to the 1950s. To a farm nestled at the base of a small mountain range in the middle of the Australian outback. The first few pages contain a factual discussion on many things, including a few creatures and inventions uniquely Australian. I promise it will not be boring (fingers crossed).
The story itself is centered on a group of boys and the trouble they get themselves into during one year’s Easter holidays. This is a story of hairy things that do go bump in the night. Of a mountain lake and its magical voices, scary voices, amplified by the great thunderhead storms that form above the lake.
And the journey six brave young boys undertake to experience these magical voices for themselves.
A LITTLE TASTE
Quote from page 25
The man on the wireless tonight mentioned there’s a storm coming soon, a big one. I say tomorrow night we all go up to the foot of the mountain, to the place where the billabong and the mountain meet. And we hear these mysterious voices for ourselves.
Quote from page 34
After reassuring himself the boys were not in the stables, Ryan turned off the lights and headed back, and as he did so, he looked over his shoulder and could clearly see a gigantic storm coming up over the mountain. A thunderhead storm, the likes of which had never been seen in his life time, Ryan’s pace along with his heart rate quickened as he headed for the farmhouse.
Quote from page 38
To make things worse the rain from the storm had made the old forest heavy with a mist that hung just off the ground. This mist swirled around the boy’s feet as they moved through it.
SHORT NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Hello,
I live in Sydney Australia with my wife and two little boys.
My university education extends to a bachelor degree in legal and justice studies (completed many years ago). I am currently employed in the pharmaceutical industry.
This is my first sojourn into the world of literature, and this book I have written is different from other children’s books. And I would imagine, far from perfect. So, when you have reached the end of my little story, please be kind when considering its contents.
PREFACE
The information in this short story was derived from three very different sources.
Firstly, the book begins with a little educational history lesson backed up by information obtained from the Internet. I have cited the information gathered in the form of footnotes and added a bibliography at the end of the story. I hope this will give children an introduction to referencing information they gather from online searches for their assignments. Please note; there are many different styles to referencing information, and its best to always check with your educator for the style they prefer.
Secondly, a great deal of the story and the trouble the children get themselves into is drawn from my own real life experiences, and that of my brother. During our early years my brother and I attended both country schools and big city schools, and let me tell you, country children get up to just as much mischief and big city children.
Thirdly, many events in the story itself are entirely from my imagination, and to my knowledge pure fiction. But on saying this, I feel compelled to quote a passage from Shakespeare’s Hamlet,
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy
.
In other words,
‘Intelligent as we are, we really don’t know everything about our world or the universe surrounding it’.
HOW THE PICTURES WERE CREATED
Thought I would add a short explanation as to the origins of the pictures presented in this story and how they were put together.
I had a difficult time trying to find the right pictures to fit the story I was telling, so I ended up collecting them from a couple of different sources. Firstly I purchased photographs from an online website. Obtained other images from websites with the owners’ permission. Several pictures were from my own photo albums. And finally, I engaged an illustrator to draw the remaining pictures.
To create the images in the story, many of the photos and drawings under took the following process;
1.The photos were photographed
2.Down loaded to my computer
3.Printed out in black and white
4.Images cut out and glued down on a blank sheet of paper
5.The images were again photographed
6.Downloaded images to my computer a second time
7.Employed a software program to blend the images, and add text (Fotosketcher 3.20)
To blend the images onto the pages, I selected a painting option from the Fotosketcher software. The entire process took several days of printing, cutting, pasting and photographing.
At the end of the day, I really do hope these images enhance the readers’ perception of the story.
