About this ebook

This book offers an incisive study on the important subject of destiny using the Holy Bible, which Christians revere as the revealed word of God. Following the Bible account, the book argues that human beings were created by God and that the Creator has a purpose for everyone he has made. It addresses such critical issues as the meaning of destiny from Gods perspective, popular misconceptions about destiny, and the Calvinist doctrine of predestination, broad types of destiny (natural destiny and supernatural destiny), Jesus Christ as the most important Bible personality that fulfilled destiny, as well as the roles of self, personal choice, natural circumstances, and the supernatural in ones destiny.
Written with deep revelational interpretation of the Bible and in easy-to-read English, this book is an essential reading for all Christians, theologians, philosophers of religion, and indeed for everyone interested in understanding the purpose for their existence, including how to know and fulfill their divine destiny.

    PREFACE

THIS BOOK OFFERS an incisive study on the touching subject of destiny using the holy bible, which Christians revere as the revealed word of God, the Creator of the universe. There is a natural curiosity in human beings - cynics, agnostics, atheists and religionists alike - to ascertain the purpose of their existence. Even ardent nihilists who deny the existence of the supernatural and profess extreme pessimism and nothingness in the natural are occasionally troubled by such curiosity. Is there really a purpose for anybody’s existence other than the things we find ourselves doing in life either by accident or human design? Who sets the purpose for existence - human beings or a supernatural being external to them? Does destiny really exist and in what form? Who determines destiny, humanity or divinity? What are the roles of self, personal choice, natural circumstances and the supernatural (i.e. God and demons) in one’s destiny? What is the place of the populist theology of predestination in the reckoning of divine destiny – i.e. the notion that everything that happens in one’s life and the world around us has been supernaturally predetermined and willed by God to happen and could not have possibly happened otherwise? These are some of the questions explored in this book through an exegetical interpretation of the holy bible.

Following the bible account, the book argues that human beings were created by God and that the Creator has a purpose for every one He has made, which makes destiny to be something significantly divine. Discovering the one and the only true God, and establishing a relationship with Him is the necessary guide to aligning with and fulfilling destiny. Divine destiny only makes sense if seen from the perspective of God, who is the author and architect of it all. Jesus Christ, the Second Person in the Christian conception of the Triune God, is the strongest proof that there is something like divine destiny. Jesus was a product of divine destiny. He had profound knowledge of all that was written in the holy scriptures prior to His birth concerning Him and lived to fulfil them.

Divine destiny, from God’s perspective, should not be confused with enjoying material success and riches, as important as material success and riches could be. This confusion is one of the greatest religious fallacies in our contemporary overly materialistic world. The bible is clear about this point and this book tries to explore it with illustrative detail.

I am pleased to gratefully acknowledge the support of a number of people in writing this book. My first debt of gratitude goes to the administrative secretary of our church and one of my closest confidants Mansford Asante and my longstanding prayer partner Mrs Florence Oyedele for painstakingly reading through the book manuscripts, making invaluable comments and corrections. I am also grateful to my spiritual mentor Reverend David King Onuoha of the Emancipation Ministries in Enugu, Nigeria and his wife Joy Onuoha for their constant encouragement, advice and prayers. Many thanks also to Reverend Onuoha for reading through and commenting on a section of the manuscripts. To all the coordinators and leaders of Crown of Christ Gospel Church in Bradford, I say a big thank you for your supplication and encouragement. Aike and Franca Aimufua, Mansford and Abigail Asante, Pastor Samuel and Florence Oyedele, and Sandra Osahon deserve special mention for their apostolic support. To my strongest partner in ministry and wife of many years Ngozi Omeje, and to our three children Rejoicing, Chibia and Ifediche, I convey an eternal debt of gratitude for your simple faith in the calling of God upon my life.

    CHAPTER 1

    UNDERSTANDING DESTINY FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE

TO UNDERSTAND THE meaning of destiny from God’s perspective, it is important to ground our knowledge in the Old and New Testament bible, which is the revealed word of God. It pleased God to reveal Himself to mankind through the bible. Human beings, regardless of how intellectually smart and educated they might be, can never know God (who is an Eternal Spirit) by their intellectual and searching capability. The Apostle Paul, one of the greatest intellectuals of his time, but who could not find God through his theological and legal knowledge until it pleased the glorified Jesus to reveal God to Paul on the latter’s way to Damascus, likens our intellectual search for God to an inquiry into the thoughts in a man’s heart. No amount of intellectual research can make you figure out what is in a man’s heart unless the fellow (or perhaps a spirit) chooses to reveal his thoughts to you. Writing in 1 Corinthians 2:11, Paul declared that if the thoughts of an ordinary created human being are so hidden that you cannot know them unless he reveals them to you, why would anybody assume that he could know the invisible Creator, His thoughts and His will, except by the voluntary and gracious revelation of His Spirit? Jesus whom the bible depicts as the Second Person in the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) makes it clear that no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him, and no one can come to the Son unless the Father who sent Him draws them (Matthew 11:27; John 6:44, NIV). As foolish as it may sound to the intellectually sophisticated and wise philosophers of every age, God has revealed Himself, His thoughts, His will, His dos and don’ts, His plans for the world and for His created people that dwell therein, as well as His saving grace and eternal judgment through the Old and New Testament bible. Through the holy bible, we can also understand God’s thoughts and perspective concerning divine destiny but we need the help of the Holy Spirit to comprehend the
