Reflection of a Hologram

About this ebook
It is on this premise that I continue the exploration of language for sound and definition began in my first collection, Noises from the Garage, in this second volume of poems written between 2011 and 2013. Giving voice to characters and objects from a grand stage to minute detail, the full sway of emotional and spiritual reckoning is on display.

Reflection of a Hologram - David Novick
Libya
No walk in the park
for the disembarked
ask the Red Cross
emergency stock
for much worse than
busted heads and fibulas
a cold winter’s night
without a spark
would have been preferable
in Antarctica.
Sun or Moon
Moon my preference
though the sun has all the fun
of a blue-eyed stare
not a care in the universe
makes regular appearances for its lesion of fans
returns the favor with the taste of sweat
the moon is more personal
reflective, humane
as it waxes and wanes.
Freak Snowstorm
Subsequent to the October attack
I listen to rap
time to prepare
suburban warfare
hand-to-hand combat
between forest and man
to hell with preservation
where’s the conclusion to this national nightmare?
Hire the crew
chain saws, ropes, and ladders,
a bucket truck
crane with tractor-trailer
the end of daylight saving time
the racket could be a factor
one more hour of Sabbath
one more hour of darkness
I count on acquiescence
of the neighbors.
Fifteen trees identified
another dozen just for fun
majestic crowns, boughs mature,
fighting trim commensurate stature
half-alive bewildered maple
more dead branches than able
blades spiral out of control
scream from every angle
severed limbs convert to wood chip disciples
shoveled into piles.
Sawdust clears
stumps cheer
the brush lies waste
exhaust the final trace.
Sonata in D
I. I grew up in a factory town
advantages of an owner’s son
fortunes as common
as scarves in a train depot’s lost and found
Dad kept the family intact
on both sides of the track.
II. He could have started his business
with a machine in the cellar as many did
but chose a brick and mortar for his high-wire act
mother and children grateful
with money tight
needless
