About The Author
Before we delve into the nitty-gritty of the college market, please allow me to share a little of my background and how I discovered the college market niche. My name is Dan; prior to entering the college market, I was (and still am) a corporate trainer. For the past 20+ years, I’ve run my own IT training company specializing in desktop applications, SEO for local businesses, web development, and organizational development skills. While I am truly grateful for all the knowledge gained, I’ve simply grown weary of the industry and am looking to move in a new direction (more on that later). Just know in my heart I’m an educator, whose passion is teaching others, passing along knowledge, and sharing experiences with them.
Please note from the outset I am not the most talented writer on the planet, which will most likely become clearly self-evident as you delve into the book. My writing style is best described as a conversational, informal tone, with the end goal of this book being to convey everything I’ve learned about working in the college market over the past few years. In short, I will speak from my heart, not my head. Remember I talk for a living....not write. There is a big difference ☺.
Admittedly this is my first attempt at writing a book and the odds of it being a best seller is quite minimal, and it doesn’t make economic sense to spend a lot of money and break the bank on your first attempt. Yes, both Upwork and Fiverr were considered, but given this book has over 25,000 words the cost gets steep. Besides, proofreaders and book editors are really expensive nowadays... good grief! Maybe for the 2nd edition? So please no complaining about poor punctuation, bad grammar, inadvertent typos, sentence fragmentation, delimiter confusion, subject-verb agreement, switching tenses, dangling participles, run-on’s, misplaced modifiers, graphic issues, misbehaving tables, and such. From the start, I appreciate your understanding and forgiveness. Thank you. ☺
How did I discover the college market?
Frankly, it was chance blended with some web research. Outside of being a corporate trainer, I have also spent 18 plus years learning martial arts, violence prevention, and sexual assault awareness. At the risk of leaving humble country, I’ve run my own studio, trained with some pretty heavy hitters (five of which have appeared on the Discovery Channel), and spent countless hours being a perpetual apprentice in the art of self-protection. One day I thought it would be a good idea to start teaching workshops at local colleges since the topic seemed logical, so I started doing some research about how to speak/ conduct workshops on college campuses, only to be blown away by what I discovered. Colleges will pay good money to bring talent acts to college, specifically bands, speakers, comedians, magicians, and a host of others. Or put differently there are tons of ways to get booked on college campuses and, as you may have guessed, plenty of people out there willing to teach you the secrets
to getting on the college circuit—for a hefty fee of course. What a shock! The cost can be several hundred to several thousand dollars for such courses. More on this topic later, for now, let’s continue the story of how I discovered the college programming niche.
While doing research I found several speakers who listed upcoming speaking dates and locations on their website. So, being the hard-core skeptic that I am, I actually drove to three geographically convenient colleges to see if they were legit. In case you are wondering I’m in the Philadelphia Metro Area, and drove to Kutztown University, Penn State University Main Campus, and Cabrini College on the respective date of the event to the campus, found the on-campus venue, sat down, and watched. To be clear I asked for permission from the school beforehand. Each speaker was very good and did fantastic work.
At the conclusion of each speaker’s event and after all the attendees had left, I walked up to the speaker, introduced myself, and after some innocuous conversation, asked them point-blank if they would help explain how they got started on the
