About this ebook
A unique book of poetry. Two books in one. Don`t be surprised if this book makes you laugh, cry, think and sigh.
Poor Calvin
Meet Poor Calvin, a ne`er do well, who will warm your heart and tickle your funny bone at the same time.
Larry Winston
The author Larry Winston was born and raised in the Homewood and Wilkinsburg areas of Pittsburgh Pa. Larry showed an aptitude for writing in High School but never pursued it, He didn`t write his first poem until he was well into his fifties, soon after the death of his father. He shared the first poem he wrote in this book, along with a few others. Several years later wrote a moving and at times hilarious book in tribute to his father entitled “Yes Sir”. Larry has a dry sense of humor, which is obvious in his writing.

I want to dedicate this book to my Late parents, Mary Louise and Edward Winston. my brothers and sisters, Edward Jr. Paul, Celeste, Josephine, Donna, Timothy, and Kimberly, our children, and other family members. I`d also like to dedicate this book to the many who encouraged me to transfer my poems to a book. Especially those who fell in love with my Poor Calvin poems, and somehow look at him as a real person, and not the ne`er do well, but loving and sympathetic character that he is.
Prologue
Soon after my fathers death in 2005, my mother wrote a beautiful poem in his remembrance, and in honor of their sixty year marriage. One that produced nine children, with eight surviving. Her poem inspired me to do the same. I`ve always had a vivid imagination, and a unique, sometimes over the top way of describing even the simplest things. In school I would on occasion be asked (ordered) to stand in front of the class and read the book report, or essay I handed in, because the teacher found it in depth and picturesque, in it`s wording. I had terrible stage fright and dreaded every second of my time in front of the class, so I remedied that problem by dumbing down my writings. After my schooling was done, my talent laid dormant until my inspiration from Mom resuscitated it, so I starting writing again. Now here we are today. This is my fourth book, and second poetry book of the four. In this book, which is really two books in one, you`ll find one segment totally dedicated to my thoughts on everything from race, love and romance, to humorous situations in everyday life, all set to poetry. If you flip the book over, you`ll find poems of a character I created, who affectionately goes by the name of Poor Calvin
. Poor Calvin`s name was born out of the responses his poems received after the reader of his antics experienced Calvin`s well intentioned, but failed attempts at any and everything, never seeming to catch a break. Poor Calvin fans have formed a sympathetic love for the Poor guy. The readers response to Calvin`s new dilemma was always; Poor Calvin
, hence his moniker. I don`t write for fame or glory, I write because, that`s what writers do.............. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.
Foreword
From the first time I met Larry and the amusing, comical, sidesplitting, lovable, imaginary character known as Poor Calvin, years ago, I knew I was in for the adventure of a lifetime. You see, it is doubtful if there is one individual more distinct or more interesting than that of the writer himself. This was truly the beginning of a friendship rich in experience with two incredible people. Giving, touching the lives of others, expanding the circle of concern to include additional folk and all the time being authentic and open to receive as well as giving is a flawless description of these two amazing individuals. This crossing of paths has led to a full, rich friendship and fulfilling exchange of humorous and
