#1 The shark attacks in 1916 were the result of a mystery that has baffled scientists for nearly a century. I have tried to make the individuals who play a role in this story come to life through the use of numerous historical and contemporary sources.
#2 The Engleside Hotel was a grand lodge off the southern coast of New Jersey, at the edge of the vast and desolate pinelands. It was a temperance house, but guests enjoyed the pleasures of reading, dining, dancing in the starlit evening, and waiting for the return mail.
#3 On the first day of July, the Engleside and the ocean were reunited by the bright gold band of beach. The young men and women in the hotel spent their days reading the Philadelphia Public Ledger and smoking Turkish cigarettes on the porches, and discussing the German march to Paris and the fall of the Philadelphia A's to last place.
#4 The Engleside hotel, which was founded by Robert Barclay Engle, was experiencing a boom period. The hotel had never experienced such a boom before.

Robert Engle was one of the first art photographers in America, and he was known for his pictures of the ocean. He also developed Long Beach Island into a similar paradise, a Florida of the mid-Atlantic.
#6
The most successful tourist season ever in Beach Haven was in 1915. Engle envisioned his great ocean city, a paradise of comfort and ease for his guests, freed from the annoyances of nature.
