About this ebook

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview:

#1 I liked it when my mother included me in the family activities. I would mix drinks for my mother and her boyfriends, and bring them over on a small metal tray.

#2 When I was almost seven, my mother began dating Johnny, a man who would eventually become my predator. I didn’t like him, and I didn’t want to know him better. I would pretend not to hear him when he tried to talk to me.

#3 I was eight years old when I learned about the expression, If nobody moves, nobody gets hurt. I continued to hold still as Johnny took my shoulders and pushed me from my room through the hall into the dark kitchen. He pushed my back flat against the refrigerator, placing my mouth level with his penis.

#4 I had a best friend named Beverly, who was an only child like me. We shared an aloneness no one else could understand. We changed this by making ourselves like twin sisters. We organized school days with matching outfits, same colors, and sweaters.

    #4

I had a best friend named Beverly, who was an only child like me. We shared an aloneness no one else could understand. We changed this by making ourselves like twin sisters. We organized school days with matching outfits, same colors, and sweaters.

    #5

I followed Beverly and her friends as they went shopping for angora sweaters. I had a lot of fun, and when I got home, Johnny yelled at me for being late. I didn’t argue with him, and just ate dinner.

    #6

I thought about the fun day ditching school. I had to figure out a way to get my own 45-rpm record player like Beverly, so I could listen to my own music. This day was more than an escape. It was a caper we had won.

    #7

I was invited to spend the night at Beverly’s house, but I ended up spending it with an older friend named Anna Carone, who was fifteen. We did the Choke and spun pachuco hop circles until I was dizzy and thirsty. I sat down on a footstool and drank another beer.

    #8

I went to the back room waiting for Anna to say good-bye to Tommy, so we could walk home. I heard a loud commotion, the music stopped, and doors slammed. Two cops stormed in and took me out. I was drunk, and I realized that somebody could take my drink away.

    #9

I had an overnight bag packed and was waiting outside for Charlotte and her mother. They arrived and I jumped in, eager to get to the skating rink. Skating was my escape from everything that bothered me.

    #10

I loved skating with the girls. We didn’t care about our hair, makeup, or cute guys. We were flying around the rink
