    Zodiac Signs - Nathaniel Craddock

    INTRODUCTION

In 1934, the American songwriter Cole Porter penned the national anthem of the Sagittarius, which includes these lines:

Just give me land, lots of land, full of starry skies above,

    But don’t fence me in! . . .

I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences,

And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses,

And I can’t look at hobbles and I can’t stand fences—

    Don’t fence me in!¹

This Sagittarian song gives voice to the juicy center of this sign’s essential style and identity: fences are your Kryptonite. Limits are your Achilles heel. The word impossible! never entered your vocabulary. The insatiable longing for the view of unfolding, unlimited terrain takes up residence in your heart from the very beginning, and there is nothing you would love more than to continue forward to endless horizons.

Sagittarius, this is your MO: when God closes a door, throw a chair through the window.

The Sagittarius style is that of a teacher, a sage, a wizard, someone who has learned their way through life in a perpetual cycle of experiment, experience, and explanation. Everything in your world has a story as to why it became just so. Knowing and telling those stories is how you weave the net that holds your world together.

You’ve been gifted with an insatiable spirit of optimism, adventure, enervation, and expansion. Because of the core motivation of your life being focused on ever-higher, ever-farther goals, part of what you’ve been given to do in this lifetime is to perfect the art of aim. Just as an archer must aim above their target to correct for gravity, so must we, who would dream of a world that is more just, more peaceful, and more abundant, learn how to aim higher than we think we can possibly hit with our goals and actions.²

You, dear friend, have been called to this world for such a time as this: by being true to who you are, you have the blessed opportunity to teach the rest of us how to do the same. By helping us to keep our eyes fixed on the imagined targets that help us achieve our goals more accurately and authentically, you can lead us into the uncharted territory of hope.

I’m so pleased to be taking this journey with you, because wanderlust courses through your veins. Heroism burns like a fire in your bones. A desire for truth, for perspective, for justice, and for a way to tell the stories of why things came to be is the engine that drives you forward through this life. Together we’re going to spread out our wings and catch this jovial updraft to see what uncharted territory we can explore.

As we do so, we’ll come to understand more deeply what it means to be under the patronage of Sagittarius’ ruling planet, Jupiter. Jupiter’s children have their unique mission in this world just the same as the children of any of the other planets do, but to be a Sagittarius means that you have a special tie to everyone’s favorite Sky Zaddy, and your motivations and gifts are aligned with all the best—and sometimes the less-than-best—characteristics of uplifting, enervating Jupiter.

As we examine different slices of life from the perspective of Sagittarius, we’ll explore how learning to mature and train the wild energy of this celestial boon can lead to a life of imagining better futures for ourselves and others, sharing an endless supply of generosity with everyone we encounter, and healing the world through healing ourselves.

    Before we begin, a note:

I practice astrology from the classical Western tradition, and throughout this volume I plan to use that tradition as a backdrop to tell your story. My goal is for you to be able to take this information and utilize it to take inspired action throughout all areas of your life.

If you are reading this and you are a Sun Sagittarius, I want you to be thinking about how what I describe in this book is related to your conscious motivation, the factor that pulls you out of bed in the morning and into action throughout your daily life.³ The sun represents the single-pointed desire that drives all of existence in the astrological imagination, and we can use the sun to cast a golden thread around all the stories and details of our lives to craft a cohesive narrative.

However, I would highly recommend that you consider reading the book that matches your rising sign, also called the ascendant. If that’s Sagittarius, too, great! If not, be sure to pick up that volume of the series, too. You’ll be reading your rising sign volume from the perspective of your baseline operating personality, the way you are in the world. It describes the routes we take and choices we make to achieve our core motivations and impacts our appearance and personality in significant ways. If what you’re reading in this book doesn’t land with you and you’re a Sun Sagittarius, you’ll want to check out the book for your rising sign.

If you don’t know your rising sign, you can find that out very easily by going to an astrology site like astro.com and entering your birth data, if you know it. If you don’t know your birth data (date, location, and exact clock time), feel free to ignore this suggestion.

One more note: if you were born during the night, the moon plays a more important role in your chart than the sun does. That’s simple enough to figure out: had the sun set by the time you were born? If so, then you have a nighttime chart, and you’ll want to check out the volume in this series that matches your moon, too. The moon describes our juicy center, our emotional security patterns, our coping skills, and the way our solar identity plays out in our day-to-day lives through our habits and unconscious actions.

    UNDERSTANDING HOW SAGITTARIUS WORKS

I have a lot of Sagittarius in my chart (both my moon and my ascendant ruler, Saturn, are there), and I’ll happily take the opportunity to share things with you that you might find interesting or compelling. Of course, I think you’ll find them interesting or compelling because I do, but that’s fine. (Was your life changed when you discovered Wikipedia? If so, you understand exactly what I mean.)

When we say, I’m a Sagittarius, there’s a risk of identifying with the sign itself, and that tendency is helped by pop astrology. In the classical astrological model, we talk about signs not as being distinct
