    Bell is a young dragon in the third grade of a one-room school. Its crowded, but the two schoolteachers work together to teach all the students. An assignment is given to the third grade through the twelfth grade to write a diary when they are caught up with their other schoolwork. Bell writes about her days in the magically hidden land of Whimamity. There, dragons and persons live together in a community that works and plays together. They work together on problems that come up like what to do about the school; it's getting to small for all the students. They have fun at holidays a time when all of Whimamity celebrates in the festivities. Some of the dragons don't fully understand what the holidays are about, but the persons of the land enjoy having the dragons there. Sometimes, Bell writes about the adventures she has in her imagination where she creates her own fun in a little world of her own. Bell writes of her fears mostly of flying, can she keep herself from accidentally getting taken by the wind, and if she does, are the knights close enough to help her down? And what is going on with the gates? What does it mean? Who is the gates for, the Whimamitians or for the outside? Can the fairies fix it? The life of a young dragon in and out of school. The fears, the fun, and the wonder of all a young one can go through in the third grade.

      Bell's Diary 3rd Grade - Julie Mayer

      Dear diary,

      This is my first day of my third year of school. Bell started to look around then dipped her nail into the ink jar and started to write. We have a small school, but we have two teachers. I have Ms. Flowers. She’s taught me since kindergarten. I like her. She takes us for walks outside where we learn about things all around us. I remember, I think in kindergarten or maybe first grade, she took us to the nectar blossom grove. There were only five of us, the teacher that’s one, two persons that’s three and two of us dragons, that makes five. As we walked, a butterfly came flying by. We all followed it down the road going to the different flowers. Ms. Flowers had us name the flowers that it landed on and some of the trees, too, that were around us.

      Then we came upon the nectar blossom grove. The smell was wonderful. I didn’t want to stop going closer to them. It smelled soooo good. The workers stopped and greeted us with smiles. One person who introduced himself as Farmer Hank taught us all about the nectar blossoms. Eddie, a worker, showed us how they get the nectar. They even gave us a ride on the wagon that they take the nectar to the, Bell tapping her nails on the desk trying to think. What is the name of that place? Oh! Ya! Processing barn. Bill worked at putting the harness on Daygo, carefully making sure it was right so he could pull us and the barrels of nectar to the barn. Once they were all hooked up and Farmer Hank checked the straps he helped us up. The ride was fun as we sang some songs about the grove and just some fun songs. I like to sing. It makes me feel happy inside.

      Farmer Hank walked with Bill and Daygo as we slowly came to the barn where they came to a slow stop, being careful not to throw us or spill the nectar. They helped us off and showed us where they stored the barrels of nectar. The barn was big and already better than half full. I only know this because Farmer Hank told us. It looked like a lot of barrels stacked on each other and many floors to put them on.

      Bill and Eddie hauled in two barrels as Daygo waited for their return for the last barrel and to put three empty barrels on the wagon and strap them down. After Farmer Hank checked the straps again, he helped us on the wagon. Slowly, Daygo turned the wagon around and started back down the trail to the grove, and again we sang fun songs. The trail was pretty with all the trees and flowers.

      I could smell the grove before we got there. I didn’t think about it until now. Why didn’t the barn smell so wonderful with all the nectar in it? I remember it was really clean. Maybe that was it. And no open barrels of nectar. It did go down into the cave. Maybe the coolness had something to do with it. And maybe running the nectar through the filters to make sure it was clean. Then the nectar goes through the cookers, and when up to temperature, they put it in another type of barrel, and then a lid that is turned tight is put on. Another group goes in at night because of the heat.

      The wagon came to a slow, gentle stop, and they helped us off. We all thanked them and said goodbye. Once on our way back, we talked about what we liked best. We all agreed that the whole outing was great. Entering the school, our teacher had us go to the front of the class and tell everyone about our trip. The older classmates smiled at us as we did our best to tell them of our adventure. Oh, I like that word. I think that will be the name of the diary, my adventures. Maybe this subject won’t be so hard after all.

      Dear diary,

      The rest of my day went rather good. It was kind of strange seeing some of the older classmates gone and new little ones come in. The teachers worked back and forth from one grade to another, announcing the subjects and grade that was next. It was almost like watching two birds feeding their young, back and forth from one to the other. Or like a play that was well rehearsed, with precision. That gives me time to work on my subjects that we are studying, and when I finish, I can go back to writing in my diary.

      Yesterday, we reviewed math. Today, we are going to hopefully finish. We are going to start multiplication this year, and it seems Ms. Flowers has a lot more new things for us to learn.

      Spelling this week is going to be easy. I think she’s going to make it harder next week.
