ummer vacation has always been a time I look forward to, after Christmas of course - the end of the school year, not having to worry about assignments, homework, or anything school related, and being able to just enjoy the time off always brings me joy. Even now that I’m in the last year of my Bachelor of Education program, I’m still able to enjoy the summers.
When I was younger, my family and I went to our cottage every summer, and now that I’m older, I have more freedoms than I did before. For example, last summer, my friends and I all rented a cottage together. We still spent time with our families of course, but we were also able to do things we couldn’t before. One of those things involved visiting one of our favourite locations in Muskoka and staying more than just a few hours. It’s the same location we have visited many times since we first found out about it 4 years ago. I remember that summer as if it was yesterday - it was an unforgettable summer, and it was also the summer after we graduated from high school.
Okay, it’s time for me to tell you a story you are probably not going to believe to be true. To be honest, I’ve never told anyone this story before. The only people who know about what happened are: me, my journal, and my friends

- Sara, Amy, Philip, and Jamie - who were there with me when it all happened. We had all agreed to keep it to ourselves for fear of being ridiculed, and because we knew that no one would believe it. We’re sure our parents would tell us that we would need to speak to someone because, to them, we’d be making up, what sounds like, an insane story, and I’m sure they’d be worried about the fact that we believe it’s true. I promise that I will tell you everything, well, I’ll do my best anyway. I also promise that every word you are about to read is 100% the truth. Trust me, I cannot make this stuff up.
Ok, here it goes. For this story, I’m going to have take you back about 4 years...
It was July 2016. Summer break had just started, my friends and I had graduated high school and were getting ready to relax and enjoy the next couple of months. We were a tight knit group of 5, and still are; we have been since elementary. We all live near each other and we try to hang out as much as we can and make the most of every moment, something we had especially planned to do that summer since we were headed to different schools in September. Yes, we knew we technically only had about a month and a half, (a month and 3 weeks if we could stretch it), before we had to start thinking about school again but we had planned to make the most of it. However, as you will soon find out, it seemed like the universe had something else planned. But before I tell you, I’ll have to start from the beginning.

uly 1st - Canada Day, and the official start of our summer break. It was a beautiful summer day. I woke up early that morning filled with excitement. Like I mentioned earlier, I had just graduated high school and was starting college in September, but planned on fully enjoying the summer before starting my new chapter. That morning, with a smile on my face and a skip in my step, I made my way downstairs for breakfast.
Someone's in a good mood this morning!
my mother pointed out as she saw me sit at the table.
Morning Mom.
Morning Sweetie. I take it you're excited to start this vacation.
Yup! I'm going to enjoy every minute and not even think about school!
Ok! So, we better finish breakfast and start preparing things for our drive to the cottage tomorrow.
I was excited to be able to spend the entire summer there. Sara, Amy, Philip and Jamie were coming up a bit later with their families. Remember when I said we're a tight

knit group? Well, our families are also very close, and we all happen to have a cottage in Muskoka. I love spending time at the cottage. It's near the lake, with a great backyard and veranda. Our backyard is nice, and really relaxing with a deck, patio table and chairs, and even a pool. Further down on the back lawn we have a swing bench, which is one of my favourite places to sit and enjoy the summer sunsets. There's also a very old and very tall tree in the backyard. I remember my parents telling me when I was 8, that that tree was about 50 years old (at the time). My grandparents planted it when they first bought the cottage in the 1960s! This is where I like to take my sketchbook after breakfast, or even lunch some days, and sit for hours. Sometimes I'll sketch the nature around me, other times I'll use photos I've taken, or I’ll decide to try to draw from my imagination. When I’m really relaxed and in my zone, my mom has to call me multiple times for lunch — once I'm in my zone it's hard for me to stop until I finish the picture. Other times she'll just decide to bring my lunch outside and lets me continue drawing. I find a sense of calm in drawing. Some people do Yoga or gardening, others workout, knit, or read to help clear their minds. I have my sketchbook, and during the summer, my big, old tree.
My mom and I finished breakfast and started organising the house before packing, while my younger sister, Elena, was allowed to sleep-in and my dad was in the home office putting away some things before a much needed 2-month vacation. Both of my parents are teachers. They love where they work and they love their jobs, but as is with every job,

it doesn't come without its stresses. We are very lucky to be able to enjoy every summer together - we are a very close family. Anyway, back to my story. I was put in charge of taking care of any left-over laundry — taking it out of the dryer, folding, putting everyone's clothes onto their bed, and putting my own away, while my mom finished cleaning-up the house. Our excellent neighbours, who we've known for many years were going to be keeping an eye on the house for us, which we also do for them whenever they go away.
Elena woke up not long after we started cleaning and my mom took a break from what she was doing to prepare breakfast for her. I was dedicated to my task. Even though I didn't really enjoy doing laundry, it couldn't break my mood. As the day went on, we all continued working on completing our tasks, which we were able to finish by 3pm. So we spent the rest of the day relaxing and having fun. This included having BBQ for supper in the backyard and going to Ashbridge's Park to watch their annual fireworks display to close out the day. My parents contemplated skipping the fireworks that year because we had to leave early the next morning, but we go every year, and my sister and I promised our parents we would go right to bed when we got home. The fireworks display was incredible, as it is every year. It's always a full 20-minute display that lights up the sky and this year was no exception — ending with an array of red and white, and even the design of a maple leaf. When the fireworks were done (around 10:30pm) we went back to our car and headed home. By 11pm, we were

all in bed, tired from the busy day we had. Now, I said we were all in bed, but I never said we were all sleeping. My sister and I were tired, but we were also too excited and couldn't fall asleep. So, since we shared a room, it was easy for us to find something to do.
First I read Elena her favourite book. Then she wanted to draw, so we drew different things we could think of; they were simple things like flowers, animals, and other random doodles. Finally, around midnight, we started to feel sleepy and we fell asleep together on the floor with our sketchbooks next to us. The next morning, Elena woke up earlier and couldn’t contain her excitement. In turn, she woke me up too! We cleaned our room and went down for breakfast. When we went in the kitchen, our parents were already at the table; our dad was reading the newspaper as he does every morning.
Good morning Sunshines!
Morning Mom! Morning Dad!
Your mom and I were letting you sleep in longer since we're not leaving for another few hours. Last night both of us decided it’s better to leave after the morning traffic.
Elena woke me up. She's too excited.
, I answered.
So are you!
, my sister exclaimed in defence of herself.
Yes, I'm excited too.
Of course I'm excited, how could I not be, I thought to myself.

Did you both sleep well?
Well, we didn't fall asleep right away,
I told my mom.
"So how
