Trivia About Occupations - Lance D. Williams

    (Introduction)

When I was 7 years old, my grandmother asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up. The first thing that came to mind was a doctor, so I said it. The reality is, at that age, it's not like you know about a variety of occupations besides the basic ones. From 7 to 14 years old, I thought I wanted to be a doctor. My grandmother was a nurse, so she would give me things like a stethoscope and other things in doctors bags. She gave me different information on what doctors do and thought I probably wanted to be a pediatrician. When I was 14, reality hit me about how long you must be in school and all the work you must do to become a doctor and maintain being a doctor, and I realized that's not something I really want to do. So, I started looking into different occupations, trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I remember my 8th grade science teacher mentioning that being a boiler operator is a well-paying job, so I looked into that. I went to the library and got a couple books on occupations. Police photography was appealing, meteorologists were interesting, a baseball scout or GM was on my list, and a few other things.

It wasn't until I was 16 years old that I started to find passion for something and wanted to do it for a career. Broadcasting was really appealing to me, especially sports broadcasting. Going into my junior year of high school, when picking classes, I found out I could go to the school across town that had a student radio station, and I took broadcasting classes there half the school day. My senior year, I hosted my own morning show, and I was good at it. I knew that's what I wanted to do. I had scholarship opportunities for broadcasting school and took them. I think about how if I knew this at 7 and practiced play-by-play when I watched games and did other things, my skills would've really developed early. I've been in broadcasting doing different things, but I also realized in my early 20s that I want to take advantage of many opportunities in my life and do many things that are appealing to me. I don't have to work the same type of job for 30+ years. I've been a sports executive, an entrepreneur, a writer, and other things I wanted to try. I've had friends who became lawyers, then decided they would rather just talk about sports for a living. Sometimes in life, you have a plan, and those plans change. It's always nice to have options and learn about new things.

As a parent, I want my kids to know about the different options that are available to them. Don't just get stuck in a box of basic thoughts and go with the first thing that pops into your head, like a doctor or lawyer. There are so many interesting opportunities in the world, and you'll
