    FOREWORD

Keep your nose in the copy, the pen in your hand and before you know it you’ll have a book written.

It was with great enthusiasm that I set about collecting proverbs and sayings for this book. The subject fascinated me. My book How The Irish Speak English had absorbed a number of snatches of dialogue which could have been classified as gems of wisdom, but there was a rich harvest still to be gleaned from the Irish countryside, from the lips of great men and from the bright, unspoilt fount of folklore, legend and proverb that still springs whenever Irish people, however long removed from a rural environment, congregate.

I wish to acknowledge the co-operation of the Head of the Department of Folklore in allowing me to avail of the fine facilities of his department and to peruse and quote from manuscripts and published material. To him and his courteous staff I offer my sincere thanks. I also thank Mrs Fionnula Williams for allowing me to study her thesis, ‘Index of the Proverbs of County Monaghan’. This was of immense help in tracing wise sayings, not alone of County Monaghan, but of many other areas too.

Thanks too to my own family, Laurence Gavin, Geraldine Hyland and Patricia Clinton for their assistance.

    Padraic O’Farrell, 1980

    ADVICE

It’s no use giving good advice unless you have the wisdom to go with it.
