Little Issue, Big Problem
In 1912, the maritime vessel dubbed Titanic prepared to make her maiden voyage. British naval officer David Blair had the menial task of keeping the keys that opened a cabinet containing the crow's nest binoculars. He was abruptly reassigned to another ocean liner just days before the first expedition. However, in his haste to gather his belongings, he failed to turn over the keys to his relief. Subsequently, the cabinet that held the crow's nest binoculars remained locked.
This would be a meaningless footnote in the Titanic's narrative if the steamship did not meet its fate of doom by an iceberg collision. Consequently, it was not an iceberg initially that caused the sinking of the Titanic. Instead, it was the slight issue of missing keys that resulted in a big problem. Similarly, the roots of our emotional history can expose themselves in extreme ways if gone unresolved. Minor issues can also become big problems.
As icebergs are deceptively large, so, too, are the effects of one's words. The story of the Titanic's locked binoculars illuminates the importance of examining ourselves to ensure our part in our pain is minimal. In James, the author speaks of the correlation between spiritual and emotional maturity. James 1:26 warns, "If anyone thinks he is religious without controlling his tongue [words],
