    Dedicated to Women

    Prologue

If there’s one thing I hope this book changes for you, I hope that it changes the way you think you can speak up for yourself. Together we are stronger, we will rally beside you.

This road of corporate progression is paved by standards much lower than a woman should have to kneel to meet.

Standards that have become normalised constructs of what a corporate culture should look like, sound like and dress like.

We have normalised the misogyny, the bullying, and the aggression because at the end of the day; we want a paycheque to survive.

In this book, I vow to press pause on professionalism.

Professionalism is not a personality type, it is a cookie-cutter mask we wear to appease and win, and this book is not trying to achieve either of those.

I vow to press pause on the characteristics this mans-world has encouraged in women only; shyness, timidness, silence, passivity.

I press pause on questioning how what I say affects men. Truly, many men have helped me along in this journey, but this book is not about what some men sometimes do for women.

I press pause on being the bigger person and letting a man get away with the things they usually get away with.

This book is going to underline, circle, highlight and megaphone the obvious moments of disrespect and those ever so prevalent underhanded, passive, manipulative lines that they somehow drop quicker than they can sniff them.

For my reader, if it was not clear, I vow to press pause on the verbal-photoshopping, perception-airbrushing, diplomatic-editing, to deliver substance of truth to my fellow corporate women.

I hope you scream with relatability as you turn each page, but also, I hope you reflect on the sadness it is that so many women do and will relate.

Feminine mentorship is a commodity greater than gold, one that many women will not find. Let this be your textbook guide. Here we are not victims, but underdogs armouring up for the overtaking.

This book is for a new wave of leaders, a fresh generation wanting to detox the ways of man; leading with integrity, justice, and unapologetic authenticity.

The next wave of leadership to come, will prove resilience and confidence, without bombs and fists.

For any woman, whether you’re at the beginning of your twenties, or twenty years deep - the more you open your eyes to the ocean of corporate sexism, the more the salt burns your eyes.

As you progress in your awareness, the more the salt will sting you. You might want to close your eyes to stop the burning, but by closing them, you enable the system to continue, and it will succeed to bully you, and the women to come.

The most important task for you is to open your eyes in the sea, allow the salt to burn, but maintain your passion, maintain your zeal, and maintain your fight.

An example of salt you may wonder?

Your manager compliments your work - their tone is ‘surprised.’

Why would decent work be surprising?

A woman’s decent work is always shocking, always surprising, always ‘different’ because to these particular men, their subliminal lack of belief in a woman’s abilities is in that moment, disproven.

Of course, being complimented on your work is much better salt than the salt that includes mentioning your appearance.

You are so attractive, and I think you're smart enough to know how to use that to get ahead, words a man so suggestively spoke over me, many moons ago.

You may not even recognise just how much salt you have become accustomed to.

Some of you reading this book, may feel it's a gamble to read in public.

‘How does this book-cover make my corporate-mask look?’

Equally and unquestionably, I wonder how writing it makes my corporate-mask look.

My Grandad was really against it for fear of repercussions, but my Mum and older generation of women - they could not wait to hold it in their hands.

Male favour equates to real promotions of monetary value. No one denies that. There are many women whom win male favour by playing a masculine role in the office.

They play the game, they lose their identity; but they win the promotion.

Voicing your experience as a woman can have real repercussions on your livelihood. Certain men are only just starting to grasp what the word ‘no’ means in the bedroom, lets not hold our breath for how long it could take for them to understand that same word in an office.

There are lots of women whom feel closing their eyes and staying passive is the only way to succeed, because the very opportunity for a woman to have the right to work in high places is in itself novel to this day.

Women for thousands of centuries have known how to sell away parts of themselves physically and mentally to men for the sake of safety, food and a home.

We should recognise that this 'selling of self' isn’t near enough a choice, but rather an ultimatum, and it’s happening every day in our offices.

Equating femininity as unprofessionalism is alive and well.

I’ve hung up the sunny-disposition to be taken more seriously.

In this book live many dark and humorous accounts of lived experiences of mine, of friends, of family members. None of these women have wanted to put their name down on these stories, out of fear of repercussion.

Women every day across the world experience the injustices that arise from being born female, being born into a life more likely to face physical violence, sexual violence and medical misdiagnosis than their male counterparts.

Yet, men will deny you of those statistics. We will not find validation from those who better themselves from an infliction that benefits them.

This book goes beneath the severest symptoms of being a woman in a corporate career and speaks a resounding ‘NO’ to the expectations, justifications and normalisations of corporate misogynistic culture.
