About this ebook

A beautiful reporter. A secret ritual in a graveyard. A disembodied hand on the side of the road. Mike Hammer returns in one of the most shocking cases of his storied career.

Private Investigator Mike Hammer may be getting older, but he hasn’t lost his step. So when he spots a brutally destroyed corpse on the side of the road in upstate New York, unrecognizable as human except for the disembodied hand lying next to it, there’s no question of him not taking the case. Especially when Melodie Anderson, the stunning young reporter determined to investigate, goes missing. But as Mike sifts through Melodie’s leads in a race to find her before it’s too late, he discovers a murder method more horrible than anything he’s ever come across… and one that neither he nor Melodie may be able to escape.

A short story begun by the late icon Mickey Spillane and completed by his long-time collaborator Max Allan Collins, Skin is a heart-pounding addition to the world of Mike Hammer.

Mickey Spillane

Mickey Spillane (1918–2006) was an American crime writer. Many of his novels featured the detective Mike Hammer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Spillane sold his first story to a pulp magazine by the time he graduated from high school. He served as a fighter pilot in the army air corps in World War II, and published his first novel, I, the Jury, in 1947. With over two hundred twenty-five million copies of his books sold internationally, Spillane ranks as one of the world’s most popular mystery writers.

Mike Hammer finds himself being approached by multiple representatives about an infamous ledger. The recent death of Mafia Don Giraldi, who Hammer did jobs for now and then, has left everyone scrambling to find the legendary ledger that the old man had filled with every murder, pay-out and exploit. Hammer isn't convinced the book really exists, but he doesn't mind telling everyone he'll look for it in exchange for cash.
This is part of The Mysterious Bookshop series. At just 65 pages, it's a novella or long short story. The manuscript was begun by Spillane, then finished by Collins, who explains that it seems that Spillane was working on it in the 80's, so that's when Collins set it. It's a tidy little story, one that seems pretty tame aside from some language, and then a sudden burst of gunfire and case closed.

“It’s In The Book” is a short 36-page piece Mike Hammer piece. Hammer is the legendary private investigator that Spillane invented and is indeed known the toughest one-man army ever. This is a short little treat about a Don who kept a ledger of transactions and left it to someone he trusted when he died. The feds want Hammer to find the ledger and the Don’s son, who is the heir apparent, wants the Don’s secrets as well. Both are willing to pay Hammer a terrific sum for finding it. What’s great about this short piece is it has the tough-guy Hammer in it and a sense of humor as well. Since this is just a short piece it should not be compared with full- length Hammer novels. Worth reading for Hammer enthusiasts and for those who want an easy introduction to the legendary PI.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

A week before his death, Mickey Spillane told his wife, Jane, When I’m gone, there’s going to be a treasure hunt around here. Take everything you find and give it to Max—he’ll know what to do. I can imagine no greater honor.

Half a dozen substantial Mike Hammer novel manuscripts were found among a wealth of unpublished material. So far I have completed four of these, most recently Lady, Go Die! (Titan Books). Three shorter novel manuscripts were also in Mickey’s files, but also seven or eight shorter manuscripts that may have also have been intended to be first chapters or possibly were the starts of short stories. From these fragments I have gradually been developing short stories. I think Mickey would be pleased to return to Dutton with Mike Hammer for the relaunch of the line that he was so instrumental in making successful.

Mickey apparently began this story around 2005, so it should be viewed as one of Mike Hammer’s last cases before his retirement at the end of The Goliath Bone (2008), chronologically the final Hammer novel.

If it weren’t for the hand lying next to the carnage wreaked on a human
