    INTRODUCTION

God, get me out of this!

How often have you said that? Are you in a situation right now that makes you say it?

When the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, they had plenty of opportunities and plenty of reasons to beg, God, get us out of this! They had wound up in Egypt because Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers. Joseph did not continue as a slave; through God’s intervention and faithfulness Joseph rose to power in Egypt. Eventually Joseph’s father, Israel, his brothers and their families all found refuge from famine in Egypt with him. Initially, the Israelites flourished. But later when a Pharaoh came along who knew nothing of Joseph, he saw this vast group of Hebrews as a threat and enslaved them.

The new Pharaoh may not have known about Joseph, but the Israelites knew their own history. They knew the Lord had pulled Joseph up out of humiliation, slavery, and false imprisonment. Would the Lord do it again, this time for an entire people?

In many ways we’re in the same condition as the Israelites.
