The Eucharist in the Writings of the Church Fathers
()
About this ebook
This book explores the profound and multifaceted theology of the Eucharist as developed by the early Church Fathers. It delves into their writings, from the Apostolic Fathers through the Cappadocians and Latin Fathers, illuminating how they understood the Eucharist as the Real Presence of Christ, a sacrificial offering, and a means of unity within the Church.
Key figures like St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, and St. Ambrose of Milan each contributed uniquely to the theological richness surrounding the Eucharist. Their works demonstrate that the Eucharist is not merely symbolic but a transformative encounter with Christ's Body and Blood. Themes such as Eucharistic sacrifice, mystical participation in divine life, and the Eucharist's role in salvation history are carefully examined, showing its centrality to Christian worship, spiritual life, and ecclesial unity.
By tracing the evolution of Eucharistic theology, this book reveals how the Church Fathers laid the foundation for later doctrinal developments and deepened the Church's understanding of this sacrament as the source and summit of the Christian life. It provides insights into how the Eucharist shaped the early Christian community and continues to inform the faith and devotion of Catholics today.

The Eucharist in the Writings of the Church Fathers - Peter Buillon
Introduction: The Centrality of the Eucharist in Early Christianity
From the earliest days of the Christian Church, the Eucharist has occupied a place of profound significance. Not merely a ritual meal or symbolic remembrance, the Eucharist has been regarded as the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, the living expression of His sacrifice on Calvary, and the means by which the Church is continually nourished and unified. For the Church Fathers, this sacred mystery was the cornerstone of Christian worship, theology, and spirituality. Their reflections and teachings on the Eucharist have shaped centuries of doctrinal development, providing the foundation for the Catholic Church’s understanding of this sacrament as the source and summit
of Christian life.
The early Christians lived in a world where their beliefs about the Eucharist often set them apart from both Jews and pagans. In their writings, the Fathers of the Church defended the doctrine of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist against misunderstandings and heresies, while simultaneously celebrating its transformative power. Through the Eucharist, they believed, believers were drawn into intimate communion with Christ and, by extension, with one another as the Body of Christ, the Church.
The focus of this book is to explore the rich theology of the Eucharist as expressed in the writings of the Church Fathers. From the Apostolic Fathers of the first and second centuries to the later great theologians like Augustine of Hippo and Cyril of Alexandria, these early Christian thinkers contributed to a deepening understanding of the Eucharist as both a mystery of faith and a practical reality for Christian life. The works of these Fathers remain vital to understanding how the Eucharist developed from the early Church to its present form in Catholic theology.
In this study, we will examine how the Church Fathers approached key theological aspects of the Eucharist: the Real Presence of Christ, the Eucharist as a sacrifice, the transformation of bread and wine, and the role of the Eucharist in the life of the Church. We will trace the development of Eucharistic doctrine from the earliest liturgical texts to more systematic theological treatments in later centuries, noting both continuity and development in thought. Our journey begins with the Apostolic Fathers, those earliest successors of the Apostles, who preserved and transmitted the liturgical and theological treasures they had received.
Chapter 1: The Apostolic Fathers and the Foundations of Eucharistic Theology
The Apostolic Fathers were those early Christian writers and leaders who directly followed the Apostles, some of whom were
