INTRODUCTION
Snoopy is a book lover, a frustrated author, and a dedicated napper, typically snoozing on top of his doghouse. He imagines a long list of fantasy lives as well, including cool college student, legendary lawyer, accomplished surgeon, and, his most famous alter ego of all, fearless World War I Flying Ace. But because he also loves to eat—and never misses a meal—our beloved beagle is a great chef, too, often whipping up something delicious for the entire Peanuts gang.
For breakfast, Snoopy might make a stack of blueberry-studded mini pancakes, fill English muffin sandwiches with scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese, or top oatmeal with fruit, nuts, and yogurt. Around noon, he celebrates pizza, his go-to meal, with crisp pizzettas topped with tomato, basil, and mozzarella, and he keeps in mind easy-to-tote lunch-box fare, such as hot chicken soup packed into a thermos or old-school egg salad sandwiches updated with toasted mini bagels. When it’s snack time, Snoopy brings out an array of dips, a creamy smoothie, a salty-sweet puppy chow, pot stickers, and more. Plus, our multitalented chef likes to bake, turning out everything from cupcakes, muffins, cookies, and pie to a cake made with root beer, his favorite beverage. And he hasn’t forgotten his cookie obsession, chocolate chip, baking a single giant one in a skillet to ensure it’s large enough to share with Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang.
So grab an apron, head to the kitchen, make all the great Snoopy recipes that follow, and serve them to your own neighborhood gang. Feeding yourself and others will fill you with joy—and get your feet doing the Snoopy happy dance.
CHAPTER 1
BREAKFAST FAVORITES
MINI BLUEBERRY BUTTERMILK PANCAKES
Snoopy and the gang all like mini pancakes dotted with fruit. You can switch up the fruit in this recipe, using banana or strawberry slices in place of the blueberries.
INGREDIENTS
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
¾ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
2 cups buttermilk
3 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled, plus more for cooking
½ cup blueberries, plus more for serving
Warm maple syrup, for serving
MAKES 4 SERVINGS
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter until blended. Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and stir until incorporated. Gently fold in the blueberries.
Preheat the oven to 200°F. Have an ovenproof platter or sheet pan ready.
Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat. Add 2–3 teaspoons butter to the hot surface (enough to coat it generously with melted butter). When the butter melts and the foams subsides, ladle a heaping tablespoon of the batter onto the hot surface for each pancake, being careful not to crowd them. Cook until small bubbles appear on the surface and the edges are golden, then flip and continue cooking until cooked through and golden on the second side, about 1 ½ minutes on each side. Transfer to the platter or sheet pan and keep warm in the oven. Repeat until all the batter is cooked.
Serve the pancakes right away, topping each serving with maple syrup and a spoonful of blueberries.
