Once upon a time there was a little girl named Clarissa. She was a sweet little girl who adored her father. Her mother passed away shortly after she was born and her father was the only family she knew. He was a good man, retired from the military, but he wasn’t like some other military men. The study of war and battles hadn’t made him stern, gruff or strict but instead made him embrace the importance of peace on earth and goodwill towards all.
Every night her father tucked Clarissa into bed and told her stories about all the places he’d visited while he was a serviceman. He also told her that she should always follow her dreams because they were right at her fingertips: Clarissa, if you can imagine what you want in life, it can happen.
On cold winter nights he would lean towards her bedroom window and with the help of the brisk night air, he would blow onto the glass and create a breath cloud on the windowpane. Then he would use his fingers to draw pictures in the mist. Clarissa loved these bedtime nights and together they drew many things. Clarissa’s father drew animals from an African safari as well as constellations and stars he could see in the night sky when he was at sea. Clarissa drew lots of flowers, particularly her favorite, holly with berries. She loved animals, the stars and the bounty of nature. She loved how the window became her canvas even when she didn’t have paper to draw on.
Clarissa cherished the time with her father and was mesmerized by the stories of the northern lights and shooting stars. She loved winter and the wonderment of snow, reindeer, and bells that jingled happily around their village. She even heard a rumor that reindeer could fly and when she asked her father about it, he smiled. Of course they can fly! Just because you haven’t seen something happen doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Believe in magic, Clarissa!
Together they maintained their stone cottage home. Clarissa’s father planted fruit and vegetables every spring to harvest from their outdoor garden and they watched the plants bloom and grow into tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, strawberries, and numerous other goodies they enjoyed throughout the year. Clarissa learned how to cook using the books on the kitchen shelves with notations in the margins made by her mother. She loved reading the notes, especially the ones that
