    PRELUDE

Stop procrastinating. That’s the message I heard during a Sunday morning worship service. It was as though God was speaking to me through the preacher. Stop procrastinating.

Yes, I am guilty. I have wanted to write a book for years, but I procrastinated. But I believe there’s a good excuse. Who would like to read my story? I had not conquered anything tremendous or noteworthy. I had not invented anything that could change the world. I had not accomplished anything significant, according to me. What did I have to share that would benefit anyone or be a blessing? Here is a thought. Instead of reflecting on substantial accomplishments, maybe God wanted me to focus on His accomplishments through me. Focus on His goodness and mercy. Tell your story of survival.

God’s prompting did not cease with the preacher. God sent other messengers. While I was escorting a volunteer through the El Dorado Correctional Facility while serving as a clinical chaplain (I do not know why we were called clinical when nothing was clinical about what we were doing, but that is another chapter), a volunteer asked, When are you going to write your book? Escorting volunteers was one of the duties of a prison chaplain. The volunteer said, I know you have a story to share that would be a blessing to others. I had never met this person before. God nudged this man’s heart to ask about my intent to publish a book. He continues, When you do, I’d like to read it.

I shared with her a conversation I had with members of an Asatru group. The Asatru is a neo-pagan religion that doesn’t embrace diversity. Her response was, You should write a book.

In the Old Testament, there’s a story about Moses, who was called by God to deliver the Israelites. When called, Moses did not run immediately to free God’s people. Nor did Moses enthusiastically accept the task. God called. Moses made excuses.

But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? (Exodus 3:11 NIV)

My words exactly. Who am I to write a book? Did Moses stop there? No. He continued to argue with God even after God gave him instructions.

And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who
