The Southeast Shelf Regional Ecosystem is heavily influenced by the warm Gulf Stream that runs along the coast. It is also home to important habitats, including estuaries and coral reefs. These habitats support important commercial and recreational fisheries. Tourism and recreation are also economic drivers in the Southeast Shelf Region, but coastal communities are vulnerable to hurricanes, pollution, and harmful algal blooms.
