Brierfield Mills, Brierfield - the clock tower
Brierfield Mills, Brierfield - the clock tower
Former cotton mill now in multiple occupancy. It had latterly been operated by Smith & Nephew. The mill as it exists today dates from 1868 and over the years had a variety of steam engines. The first engine was a 1500 horsepower double McNaughted beam engine by William Bracewell of Burnley, built 1868. There was another Bracewell engine - a Bracewell and Pickup patent inverted vertical compound. There were three John Petrie horizontal tandem triple expansion engines dated 1885, 1894 and 1895. The last engine house was built in 1907 and housed a Burnley Ironworks horizontal twin tandem compound that was installed in halves in 1907 and 1921. This drove a weaving shed that appears to have been demolished. Steam stopped being used in the 1950s and the chimney was demolished in 1963.
