The story is of a young woman who falls for a man and gets pregnant and then he leaves her. Her child is adopted and forever leaves a hole in her heart and despite all attempts to make a new life for herself abroad she is always drawn back to the nasty, backward, prejudiced, wicked family and country of her past. The country isn't named but since the girl is a Bedouin it's probably Lebanon or close by.
In the West we think of the man who abandons his pregnant girlfriend as dishonourable and feel the girl deserves our support, and we treasure the baby, no matter how it was conceived. Is this not the right and proper way? To preserve and respect human life, to cherish and raise children with love? Do you think this should be changed? Should the concept of honour reflect a woman's sexual activity or rather, the lack of it, or should it be to do with the overall morality of how good people try and live? Should imposing the death penalty be the prerogative of all males or remain, our way, with the courts of justice, if at all?
All the wrong answers can be found in this book.

If the very many individuals who immigrate to the West from countries where women's rights are close to non-existent compared to a man's, and who fight for laws being changed in the Western countries to accommodate their own cultural and religious ideas get their way, crimes of honour against women will go unpunished. If the West doesn't stop being so PC about never mentioning race or religion in crimes where it is so obviously a major part, then these crimes will not be noted as separate from other, more 'ordinary' murders and we will not see the wood for the trees
If a person moves from a country to another with different values, then When In Rome, Do as the Romans Do ... should be the guiding light. Honour killings are anathema to the West. To the world. But how to persuade the men who would perpetrate them of that?

تستهويني تلك الروايات القادمة من المنفى والغربة .. خصوصاً إذا كانت ترتبط بسيرة إمرأة قادمة من بيئة عربية مغلقة ومتحفظة على نفسها كثيراً , لذلك وجدت هذا النص يأخذني إلى حيث أشتهي .. ويتنقل بيّ مع "سلمى" في شوارع إكستر , حيث تمتلئ رئتاي بهواء أوروبا وتتغلغل في ذاكرتي مشاهد واجهات المحال الموزعة على الرصيف ووجوة العابرين من فوقه . الرواية معجونة بلغة لذيذة وذات رونق موسيقي عالي .. رشيقة في التعابير وفخمة في تراكيب الألفاظ , وهو ما أحببته فيها , كذلك تزدحم الرواية بوجوة الشخصيات التي لا تتوقف عن الحضور مع التقدم في قراءة الرواية .. والجميل أن لكل شخصية نفسيتها وطباعها وربما حكايتها الخاصة .
لا أعرف كيف أحدد شعوري تجاة الطريقة التي صيغت بها الرواية .. حيث تندمج أحداث الماضي بالحاضر من دون فواصل مُعلنه وصريحه , الأمر الذي يتطلب منك التركيز الشديد وحضور الذهن لتعيد بنفسك ربط الأحداث وترتيبها , في البداية إستثقلت هذا الموضوع , لكنني بعدما إنخرطت أكثر في فصول الرواية وجدتنيّ أحب تلك الطريقة , فهي تعطيك مجالاً للمقارنة بين "سلمى" القديمة .. و"سلمى" الجديدة/المكسورة من الداخل , والتي تريد أن تظهر دوماً بمظهر إمرأة إنجليزية عصّرية .
المشاهد المؤثرة والفاتنة كثيرة في الرواية ولا تتوقف عن الحضور وهو الأمر الذي وجدته جميلاً في هذا النص .. فقد وجدت شيئاً من الألم في مشهد الولادة داخل متاهات السجن , وكذلك رحلة الهرب مع "خيرية" للخلاص من الموت المحتم . كذلك وجدت شيئاً من الفتنة في لقاء "سلمى" بـ "جيم" .. والحوار الذي دار بينهما في البار , حتى إنتهى بعد ذلك بإيصاله لها إلى بيتها ودعوتها له للدخول وتناول شاي المرمية وما إنتهت عليه تلك الليلة حتى صباح اليوم القادم , ومن ثم ما شعرت به تجاه تلك الليلة وتجاه "جيم" بالذات بعدما إستيقظت في ذاك الصباح .
شعرت وأنا أُقَلب صفحات هذة الرواية أنني أشهد فيلماً سينمائياً لذيذاً .. ربما لتوارد المشاهد المنفصلة/المتصلة ببعضها البعض , وحضورها بإستمرار دون لحظة توقف أو إستشعار للوقت . الأمر الذي أضفى متعة حقيقة طغت على النص , بجانب حضور النص بسياق ولغة جذابة ولطيفة .
قد يظن البعض أن النص يتوقف عند خطيئة "الزنا" التي إرتبكتها "سلمى" إلا أنه في الحقيقة لا يسلط الضوء كثيراً على هذا الموضوع .. بل هو يتجاوز هذا الموضوع إلى مناطق عديدة من حياة "سلمى" , فهو يخبرنا عن تجربتها في التأقلم مع بيئة غريبة وعادات جديدة , و مدى تكيفها مع ضميرها الذي يعذبها على الدوام , ويرسلنا في ذاكرتها ليستعرض لنا من ذكريات الماضي الكثير , الحلو منها والمُرّ , كذلك يلقي ظلاله على كل شعور جديد تتلقاه "سلمى" في الغربة .. ويمنحنا نظرة عامة على كل الشخصيات المحيطة بها والمؤثرة على سير حياتها اليومي .
ايضاً من المشاهد ذات التأثير العالي في النص .. الأيام التي قضتها في الدير في بيروت , ومن ثم رحلتها إلى قبرص , والأشخاص الذين إلتقتهم في طريق رحلتها الطويلة وصولاً إلى "بريطانيا العظمى" , وما كان يأتي من أحداث ومشاعر تتخلل وصولها إلى أي مكان جديد .
تركيبة الشخصيات المحيطة بـ "سلمى" مُثيرة جداً , ومن الصعب حصر مدى تأثيرها على سير الأحداث , فتداخل وجودها في حياة "سلمى" يلقي على الرواية بعداً آخر من التشويق والحس الدرامي اللذيذ .. فـ "ليز" و "آلن" و "جون" و "جيم" و "ماكس" و "بارفين" وشخصيات أخرى كثيرة , كل واحدة من هذة الشخصيات متفردة بتركيبة داخلية عجيبة , ولها في حياتها من الماضي والحاضر أحداث عدة مشوقة .
التسارع العجيب في الأحداث الذي حصل في الفصل الأخير كان مثيراً , أما النهاية فكانت درامية ومؤلمة ودامية .. والطريقة التي صورت بها كانت مفزعة وكئيبة وقاتلة . حيث مشهد العودة , ثم الفجيعة , ثم اللون الأحمر القاني المتناثر في كل أرجاء المكان .

رواية جميلة استمتعت بقرأتها ، تروي البطلة قصة حياتها السابقة متداخلة مع الحالية ،كانت تعيش في قرية في بادية الشام وهربت إلى مدينة بريطانية ، تحكي بأسلوب متداخل جدا ومتشابك ، يسبب الإرتباك بعض الأحيان ...
غلطة عمر البطلة لاتغتفر في مجتمع يعتبر شرف الأنثى أغلى ماتملك ،،، من خلال قرأتي للرواية لم أستطيع الانحياز لصفها واعتبارها مغرر بها أظن بأنها شريكة بالجريمة التي وقعت لها وطرف مستمتع أيضا .
تضايقني جدا كلمة ممارسة الحب والتي تعني في حقيقة الأمر ممارسة الزنى !!! لا أدري هل هي تطبيع أم تغيير للمفاهيم أم ماذا ؟ أكثر ما أتمناه وأنا أقرأ الروايات العربية التي تتطرق لهذا الموضوع أن لا تكون من النوع من المرغوب لدى المراهقين والمراهقات فيظنوا أن الزنى في المجتمع المسلم أصبح يسمى الحب .. الفرق بين الاثنان واضح وكبير ..

رواية مليئة بالتفاصيل الصغيرة و القفزات العشوائية بين الماضي والحاضر ، تلك القفزات تشتت القارئ و تسلبه متعة القراءة .. الرواية تتحدث عن قضية العار لدى العرب و للأسف أنها كتبت بطريقة سلبية بحته ، سلمى الفتاة الشامية تأكل التفاحة المحرمة ثم تهرب من وطنها وطفلتها التي ستعود لها بعد سنين قليلة .. ما أزعجني حقًا في هذه الرواية هو تجسيد المرأة العربية على أنها ذات رغباتٍ مكبوته تظهر مع أول ابتسامةً من الرجل .. فيها الكثير من التشبيهات المقززه ..

If you read fiction to escape, then you read literature to fall in love, and with this love collect for your heart the fallible gestures of human judgment that mark a life as you would know it. The Cry of the Dove creates a woman easy to fall in love with because her life encompasses the most human effort: to stake and bound an identity amid conditions that are powerfully imbalanced, but quietly, lovingly, individual.
The novel is constructed with evocative language and a speech broken only out the narrator’s mouth, for Salma Ibrahim El-Musa, sometimes Sally Asher, is nothing if not honest in the cruelty of her self-image, her Bedouin roots never not on display for judgment by her adopted England. Like her speech, scenes of the narrative are spilled like a bag of stones, skipping from present to past, but orchestrated in a way to muse here on religion, here on birth, here on desire, here on loss.
I don't know what to say that would express why I think this novel is so beautiful, just as I don't know how to encapsulate a life to make it tell as well as it feels. But I am in love with this complicated Salma, as much as with what she would hope to lightly carry as with how steadily she would march toward grace.

لازلنا نشهد التدمغ الهائل في المجتمعات العربيه من خلال اي قصه بطلها أنثى ورجل
تارة في قيود الأعراف والتقاليد وتاره في الظروف المحيطة بالعلاقات وتاره في الاشخاص انفسهم
ولا اعلم ان كنا اعتدنا هذه السمه في مؤلفات الكتاب العرب او انها وصمه تميزت بها علاقاتاتنا
الحزن والفضيحه والشرف
مصادمات تلحق بكيان المحبين وتقودهم الى خطايا قد يدفع ثمنها حتى من ليس له علاقه
لماذا نجرد الحب الى مفهوم العار؟؟
لماذا نحيك قيود على العلاقات الجميله ؟؟
لماذا نرتدي اثواب لاتليق بأحجامنا لارضاء الأخرين ؟؟؟
لماذا نحيل الأمكانيات الى قيود ؟؟
وكيف نلوم العاشق على انفطار قلبه حين نحبس عنه النبض بأبعاده عن من يحب ؟؟
وكيف نستقصي التعلق من مفهوم الحب حين نبني الأسوار حول علاقات المحبين ولايتبادر الى اذهاننا انهم معصومون من ارتكاب الخطايا ؟؟؟
وأي خطايا حين تحملها الفتاه وتظل موصومة بها وبعائلتها
ويفر منها الرجل
قصة سلمى أنموذج فهي قدر الحب في البلدان العربيه
شخصيه لاتنسى الماضي اللذي فرت منه ولا تكف عن ترديد أسمها اللذي قامت بتغييره
وتعتمل في داخلها الأضداد،
القسوة والحب، الوطن والغربة، والتأرجح بين كره الذات وحس القوة.
وكل ذلك من خلال عبارات وتعليقات مرهفة ومرحة في آن.
ولكنها مسكونة أيضاً بالذنب تجاه عائلتها ومجتمعها. «لطخت اسم عائلتي بالوحل»
وهي أهدرت شرف قبيلتها البدوية في قريتها «الحمى» بعد ان حملت من حبيبها حمدان
ويصمم أهل القرية – وأبوها في طليعتهم – على قتلها غسلاً لشرف العائلة المهدور.
ونتيجة لذلك تدمرت حياتها الهادئة تماماً.
ولم يعد في مقدورها العزف على الناي ولا اللهو مع قطيع الماعز ولا السباحة في النبع.
وينتهي بها المطاف في السجن بحثاً عن الحماية، وأُبعدت عن طفلتها.
واجهت سلمى قدرها الصعب في السجن لفترة وعندما توقف رجال القبيلة ظاهرياً عن المطاردة،
هربت سلمى الى أحد الأديرة في لبنان. ومن هناك الى انكلترا
رحلة صعبة وقاسية تمشيها سلمى من الحمى في الأردن الى اكستر في انكلترا.
وفي كل مرحلة تشتد المواجهة وتصعب،
ولكن المواجهة الأشد هي المواجهة مع الذات،
والمواجهة المشهودة هي الغربة والخوف والمأساة المغلفة بالسخرية.

من أسوأ الكتب التي قرأتها في حياتي وقطعاً الأسوأ في قراءات 2024 على الإطلاق ... لا أحب دس السم في العسل ونقد الدين تحت شعار القمع والحريات ... ما هي رسالة الرواية؟ سلمى تمارس الزنا قبل الزواج بكامل رغبتها وهي تتلذذ حين يدعوها حمدان غانية وعاهرة وألفاظ بذيئة أخرى ثم تدخل السجن حماية من غضب القبيلة وعقاب القتل لاستعادة الشرف ثم يتم تهريبها من السجن لدير في لبنان ثم إلى إنجلترا حيث تمارس الجنس وتشرب الخمر وتتعرف على فتاة باكستانية هربت هي الأخرى من عائلة مسلمة متخلفة ومتحجرة وتتزوج من رجل مسيحي يعرض عليها أن يعتنق الإسلام وترفض هي ذلك ثم شخصية صادق بائع الخمور الباكستاني المسلم الذي يصلي يومياً داخل محل الخمور خمس مرات ثم شخصية ليز الإنجليزية بقايا النظام الكولوني والعقلية الفيكتورية ... وكل هذا كوم وأسلوب السرد كوم آخر والكاتبة تحاول مزج سرد حداثي لا يسير بصورة منتظمة فيختلط الماضي والحاضر وهي لا تمسك بتلابيب الكتابة وقد ملأت الحكي بكم هائل من التفاصيل والتكرار ... كتاب سيء بكل المقاييس حقيقي من أبشع ما قرأت ولا يستحق حتى تلك النجمة اليتيمة

عَن " سلمى" الراعية البدوية من قرية الحمى ببادية الشام التي حبلت بطريقة غير شرعية وحتى لا تصل إليها أيدي القبيلة أُودعت سجن الأصلاح لست سنوات بعدها انتقلت إلى لبنان منها إلى لندن ، لتعيش على الماضي تقتات الذكريات وتشربُ من ماء الاشتياق تندب بشرتها السوداء وتنتحب لوجهها الذميم .
أرى أن هذه الرواية بقدر ماهي تنادي بالحقوق فهي تهضمها إذ لا ترى المرأة إلا جسد بَضُّ أبيض ، ولا ترى من الإسلام إلا ما يحرمه ومن الشرق إلا ما يُعيبه. ناهيك عن الزمن المتقهقر إلى الماضي القريب والبعيد إلى أن تضيع نقطة ارتكاز الحاضر .

الاسلوب ممتاز ويجذب القارئ ولكن الفكرة فيها ظلم للشرق سيما وان الكتاب موجه اصلا للغرب وفيه نوع من التهكم بالدين الاسلامي فالحاج ابراهيم لا يصلي جميع الفروض اما الشاب الباكستاني الملسم صادق فانه يؤدي الصلاة ولكنه يعمل بائعا للخمر واما سلمى فهي مسلمة لا تشرب الخمر وتمسكت بحجابها قدر الامكان ولكنها رغم ذلك ارتضت بعلاقة خارج اطار الزواج وانجبت طفلة ....

رواية جميلة جدًا ومؤلمة. تتحدث عن سلمى الفتاة البدوية. تحمل سلمى بطريقة غير شرعية. ووسط العادات والتقاليد يحلل قتلها.
يتم إرسال سلمى للسجن الإصلاحي وتلد ابنتها ليلى غير الشرعية في أحضان السجن.
تُسلب ليلى منها وتهاجر سلمى بطريقة ما إلى بريطانيا.
قراءتي الأولى للكاتبة البريطانية الأردنية فادية الفقير. وأود القول بأن طريقة وصفها لما يجول في فكر سلمى من تعب وبؤس وخوف أعجبني جدًا.
بين نظرة المجتمع الشرقي والمجتمع الغربي إزاء سلمى ، إن كانت هنا أو هناك فهي تحارب، ففي مجتمعها ضد العادات والتقاليد، وهناك لدى الغرب بسبب لونها.
هذه الرواية باختصار تعرض مدى تخلفنا كبشر إن كنا عرب أو غير عرب. فلا زلنا نقيم ونرفع من شأن الإنسان حسب لونه وطبقته وما إلى ذلك بغض النظر عن الأشياء الأخرى.
لا أدافع عن سلمى لما ارتكبته فالزاني والزانية بالطبع في الإسلام "يرجمان". ولكن
من نحن لنحلل قتل النفس تحت اسم الإسلام ونظرات الناس لنحتمي تحت مظلة من مطر العيب؟
هناك وجدت لها زوج يعرف بالضبط ماضيها، وأنجبت منه ابن، وتناسى ماضيها بذنوبه ومزاياه. هل جون موجود هنا عندنا؟ ربما..

Disappointing. I wanted to like it. I tried to like it. I certainly felt empathy and sympathy for the female protagonist; she was poorly treated both by her own family and by others. However, she also brought a great deal of her own misery on herself and she encountered the kindness of angels in disguise. The book jumps around a lot (from various places in the past to various places in the recent present) the language is unnecessarily crude and the plot is predictable. I only finished it in hopes it would get better; it didn't. Too bad; it had promise.
(Previous: Went to Barnes & Nobles last night--kind of like letting a gambler go to a casino or an alcoholic go to a bar! I was "only" going to buy Animal, Vegetable, Miracle since I had to return the library's copy and I decided I wanted one for my own. They were sold out of course!!! My 15% off coupon was burning a hole in my pocket however, so I got this book instead. It's about a Bedouin girl who falls from grace and comes to live in England. I should be finishing Busman's Honeymoon! I just had to peak inside. It looks really good. With all the conflict in the Middle East and the oppression of women there, I have a great interest in them: their lives, how they are treated, what they think, how they endure, and then, if they emigrate, how they cope with Western culture. It looks like a good book to shed light on all those areas.)

If I kept stitching and fasting, if I kept silent, I would slip slowly out of my body like a snake shedding her old skin. I might stop being Salma and become someone else, who never had a bite of the forbidden apple. Time might pass quickly so I would slide gently from prison to grave. No pain, resistance or even boredom.
Fadia Faqir, with a subtle and delicate style, weaves the tragic chronicle of Salma's death foretold.

The story of Salma Ibrahim El-Mousa, a Bedouin woman from somewhere in the Levant (the region comprising Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, and Jordan), possibly Lebanon. She is put in jail to escape being killed by her own family, an “honour killing” after falling pregnant out of wedlock. Later she is smuggled to the UK and begins a new life there. The story follows both the harsh realities of her life in the Middle East & her struggles to adapt to life in England against racism, cultural & language barriers and the sheer foreignness of it all. She also spends the rest of the book haunted by her fears and her grief over her lost child. There are some interesting side characters like the alcoholic landlady Liz, caught up in her dreams of her old life in the Indian Raj, and outspoken Parvin, also fleeing from her Pakistani family. The most distracting thing about this book was the constant flitting between times and places. It follows the two story lines but in a random jumbled fashion that felt frustrating. The book was good in that it shed light on the tragic injustice of honour killings and their repercussions, and also the harshness of life as an immigrant, but it was on some level unsatisfying. In part, I think, due to the choppy style which made it hard to get into the story, but there was something else I can't quite put my finger on that made this book slightly disappointing.

So, usually I don't like this style of writing, jumping from one place to another, making me feel lost and requiring me to read the sentence more than once to understand what she is talking about, despite of that, I was attracted to the writer's style, she managed to keep me on toes, wondering what's the end will be.
The story...what to say, we hear it all the time, a lady makes a mistake by giving herself to a man thinking he loves her and he will stand by her, a man who wants nothing but fulfilling his physical needs, a community that makes a God of itself and punishes the female but forgives the male despite the fact that they did the same mistake, a child that came this world...and left it as a mistake..a story we hear it all the time...nothing much new.
Reading this book, I felt the struggle of a woman living as a stranger, lost between what is right and wrong, fighting her desires, yet desiring revolution... was she right...was she wrong...I guess we don't have the right to judge.
The end...in life...sometimes we get lucky and we get a second chance...sometimes on a sliver plate...but we choose the pain over happiness...why didn't she forgot about the past...why didn't she live her new life with her loving husband and her kid who needs her...why did she choose the pain..even though she knew well that she will make no difference in her kid's life...
Each time I try to understand humanity...I find it even more complicated than before!!

I found this book while browsing at the library. I took it home because I enjoyed A Thousand Splendid Suns, which ended similarly, but in a majestic, satisfying way.
Also, enough with the flowery descriptions already. This book would have been a short story without all the "turquoise encased in silver" blah blah blah.

I desperately wanted to like this book. There were parts of it that were beautifully written. My heart wrenched for Salma -- the main character of this piece. Still, it took me a good two or three reads of the first few chapters to even determine what was going on and in what time period -- which was aggravating.
The story also had a tendency to move at an extraordinarily slow pace leading to an outcome which was plainly obvious from the very beginning.
I'd be interested to hear other's thoughts on the novel and so even though I didn't like it, I'd still recommend it to friends.
The novel centers around Salma, a Bedouin woman who flees her native country after becomming pregnant outside of marriage. She ultimately ends up in the United Kingdom where she must start a new life after escaping various tragedies in her old one.

আমি প্রত্যেক দিন ভাবি আজকে কিছু লিখব বইটা নিয়ে কিন্তু লিখা হয়ে উঠে না । ৩-৪ মাসের রিডারস ব্লক থেকে মুক্তি দেবার জন্য বইটার অন্তত একটা ধন্যবাদ প্রাপ্য ।
অসম্ভব মর্মস্পর্শী একটা উপন্যাস । এক মায়ের তার মেয়ে খুঁজে বের করার গল্প। যে মায়ের গলায় ঝুলছে বেদুঈন নিয়ম ভাঙ্গার অপরাধের একমাত্র শাস্তি মৃত্যুদন্ড। সব কিছুর বাইরে গিয়েও সন্তান জন্ম দিতে পারলেও তাকে নিজের কাছে রাখার মত সাধ্য টুকু ছিল না । একজন মানুষকে পোড়াতে এত চেয়ে বেশি কিছু লাগে না।
ওকে আমি এখন ও ঠিক জানি না কেন বইটা আমার এত ভাল লেগেছে কিন্তু কথা হল আমি এরই ভিতর ২ বার বইটা পড়ে ফেলেছি। হয়ত আরো ২-১ বার পড়ব ।
বইটা আমাকে একবারের জন্য মুগ্ধ করেছে আগামীতে ও বার বার করবে !!

اشعر بالاسى و الضيق على كل ثانية اضعتها في قراءة تلك الصفحات ...
الرواية ذات موضوع رائع و مفيد لكن اسلوب العودة في الذكريات كل صفحة ونصف جعلها ( مقطعة موصلة ) مع ان نفس الاسلوب كان ناجحاً مع العديد من الكتّاب في العديد من الروايات.
لا ادري ايضاً ما يزيد او ينقص من قدر الرواية في حال تمّ ذكر التفاصيل الدقيقة لجسد البطلة و التي برأيي نزلت بها الى سلة الروايات الفاشلة خاصتي

I wasn't a huge fan of this book. Multiple reasons.
I found Salma very hard to empathise with, although I absolutely empathised with her story. It was hard, and heartbreaking, and an absolute success migrant story. But she was so so so so miserable. And I understand so much of that. But come on. The idea that I am always a horrible sinful terrible person wears thin.
I did get a bit of whiplash from all the switching timelines. And that ramped up a lot in the last 50 pages where they were trying to wrap up the story. That also made the book hard to read. Hard to follow story and hard to emphasise with MC.

March 10, 2017Jarring, disjointed, fractured, and out of place, the shattered, sharply jagged edges of Salma's narrative cut into one another, mirroring her inner turmoil as she tries to navigate, to make sense of, the pieces of her life and the shards of her heart. Torn violently away from her native land and forced into a culture, a language, a climate, and a country for which she was given no points of reference to foster a transition between the two, she cannot reconcile her personal identity with her new home and exists inside the boundaries of her own self, learning enough of an alien landscape to survive, but not thrive. But as with so many, difficulty adapting is not even the tip of her problems. Her suffering cuts deeper than mere cultural displacement, for it is her heart which is displaced; ripped from a daughter and a family which she cannot forget no matter how hard she tries.
The protagonist's psychological process throughout the novel was both realistic and thought-provoking. It is not the sappy-sweet tale of an unlikely happy ending nor is it a depressing deterministic outlook of the fate of immigrants everywhere, but Fadia Faqir writes Salma's tale to its logical (dare I say inevitable) conclusion in a heartfelt and sensitive yet realistic way which illuminates the cultural burdens, hidden sorrows, and inarticulate desperations in us all.

It is not the sappy-sweet tale of an unlikely happy ending nor is it a depressing deterministic outlook of the fate of immigrants everywhere, but Fadia Faqir writes Salma's tale to its logical (dare I say inevitable) conclusion in a heartfelt and sensitive yet realistic way which illuminates the cultural burdens, hidden sorrows, and inarticulate desperations in us all.

If you read fiction to escape, then you read literature to fall in love, and with this love collect for your heart the fallible gestures of human judgment that mark a life as you would know it. The Cry of the Dove creates a woman easy to fall in love with because her life encompasses the most human effort: to stake and bound an identity amid conditions that are powerfully imbalanced, but quietly, lovingly, individual.
The novel is constructed with evocative language and a speech broken only out the narrator’s mouth, for Salma Ibrahim El-Musa, sometimes Sally Asher, is nothing if not honest in the cruelty of her self-image, her Bedouin roots never not on display for judgment by her adopted England. Like her speech, scenes of the narrative are spilled like a bag of stones, skipping from present to past, but orchestrated in a way to muse here on religion, here on birth, here on desire, here on loss.
I don't know what to say that would express why I think this novel is so beautiful, just as I don't know how to encapsulate a life to make it tell as well as it feels. But I am in love with this complicated Salma, as much as with what she would hope to lightly carry as with how steadily she would march toward grace.

Honestly, it was an alright book. Salma, the main character, goes through many hardships with being foreign. One problem that I found was the time jumping. There is never a cue to inform the reader of the jump. It suddenly happens and every paragraph is from a different period. It's ridiculous and impossible to get into a scene completely when it changes within a couple words.
Another thing, while Salma gathered a lot of sympathy from me, I found that her character changed too suddenly. It appears like she would never go after her daughter, but when she finally gets settled and has a son, she decides to abandon her new son in favor of finding her long lost daughter which I find ridiculous when the entire time, she was just wallowing in her own sorrows and blame, but not actually caring about her daughter. She wants to go finally because it's pestering her and will give her a peace of mind. All in all, she just appeared selfish.
I most definitely will not read it again.

Interesting book that puts the spotlight on the dangers faced by women in some cultures as well as the treatment and experiences of immigrants by some and in my view the dangerous effect of organised religion.
I read it in one sitting, although I didn't find doing so particularly enjoyable - I was afraid if I put it down for a break I would give up. Although I felt for Salma and was interested in the plot, I found the jumping from one time period to another in each paragraph (or it felt like that) to be difficult and just too much. It felt very disjointed, which I'm sure reflects the life/identity of Salma but makes following events a bit confusing.
