This is listed as Allende's debut novel and I thought it was an exceptional well written work. It's written as a narrative by two different sources but it doesn't really uncover the source of the second narrator until the end of the story. The first narrator is Esteban Trueba who is a very unlikeable character for the majority of the book. I know that I did laugh at some parts that weren't actually funny but that's how I roll, what can I say. Through out the book we are surprised and not necessarily in a good way by some of the fantastic and bazaar doings of this family. If you want to be entertained by a enjoyable book I would recommend this one. ...more
