Exclusive: A24’s Timothée Chalamet movie Marty Supreme, about ping-pong prodigy Marty Reisman, is one of the few blue-chip movies on offer at this week’s American Film Market in Las Vegas. It’s also shaping up to be the most expensive.
Word from buyers this past week has been that the movie — which is filming in New York — comes with an eyebrow raising $90M budget. We hear that’s exaggerated, however, and that $70M gross is more accurate.
That still makes the project the most expensive new package on sale at this year’s AFM and makes it A24’s joint most-expensive production to date alongside Dwayne Johnson starrer The Smashing Machine, which is in post-production (and is another ‘sports biopic’ that doesn’t obviously scream big-budget). Both movies are directed by a Safdie brother: Marty Supreme by Josh, and Smashing Machine by Benny. Both previously teamed on A...

Timothée Chalamet surprised fans at his own look-alike contest in New York City on Sunday, where the rowdy event resulted in at least one arrest.
Chalamet posed for photos with several of his doppelgängers present at the event — many of whom were dressed as the actor’s most famous characters, including Willy Wonka and Dune‘s Paul Atreides. The Associated Press reported general chaos surrounding the event, where Chalamet was flanked by body guards and some fans seemed to mistake look-alikes for the real actor.
The contest had been previously advertised on flyers around New York and was one of several doppelgängers events hosted by YouTuber Anthony Po, with a $50 prize for the winner. Look-alikes were interviewed onstage about their plans with Kylie Jenner, Chalamet’s presumed girlfriend, as well as their French proficiency (the Little Women actor is bilingual). Miles Mitchell, a look-alike dressed as Willy Wonka, eventually took first place.

Timothée Chalamet was in good company during a visit with fans this weekend, where he was more than likely asked to call them by his name.
On Sunday, the Oscar nominee made a surprise appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Park, where hundreds of fans gathered to compete in a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest.
In videos shared to social media, several doppelgängers posed for photos in the sea of people before the Dune star joined them, resulting in some genuinely shocked faces. A frenzy broke out as he hugged his admirers and posed with them.
Incidentally, Chalamet didn’t win the contest, arriving with a mustache and a shorter head of hair — after portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
The contest took place after flyers popped up around the city with a Qr link to the event’s Partiful page and the offer of a $50 cash prize.

The filmmakers behind prominent documentaries on casting directors and the #MeToo movement have set their sights on another Hollywood subject: the evolution of the performers’ union SAG-AFTRA.
Director-producer Tom Donahue and producer Ilan Arboleda are working on a film about the transformation of the labor organization union between 2008, when the Writers Guild of America struck film and television studios and the Screen Actors Guild considered (but ultimately did not realize) their own work stoppage, and 2024, in the aftermath of the union’s landmark 118-day actors’ strike. The film will represent the culmination of interviews that have spanned a decade conducted by the filmmakers, whose project will additionally cover the union’s history and its longtime fight to create a middle class of actors, they shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

More than two months into SAG-AFTRA’s strike against video game companies, the union and the bargaining group representing employers have set a return to the bargaining table.
The negotiations will continue on Oct. 23, the parties said in a joint statement on Tuesday. The companies included in the employer negotiating group include Activision Productions Inc., Disney Character Voices Inc., Electronic Arts Productions Inc., Formosa Interactive LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., WB Games Inc, Take 2 Productions Inc., Blindlight LLC and Formosa Interactive LLC.
The return to in-person negotiations is a long time coming. The union’s Interactive Media Agreement expired in November 2022 and reportedly the last time the two parties met in person was in November of last year, not long after the union concluded its historic 118-day strike against film and television companies.

It’s been many months since SAG-AFTRA and the major video game companies sat down for in-person bargaining talks on a new contract. That’s about to change.
The actors union, which launched a strike in late July against several companies, said today that it will resume negotiation for its Interactive Media Agreement on Wednesday, October 23. Bargaining has continued off-and-on, but the sides have been operating without a contract since November 2022.
AI has been the sticking point on for months on the contract, which covers voice and performance-capture talent on video games.
The gamer companies being struck are Activision Productions, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts Productions, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Llama Productions, Take 2 Productions and WB Games.
When the strike was called, negotiations on the Interactive Media Agreement had been ongoing for more than 18 months, though these talks aren’t as consistent as those between Hollywood unions and the AMPTP,...

Last week, a surprising cluster of 1950s European cars occupied some prime parking spots on Lexington Avenue and 75th Street in New York City. A low-slung and curvaceous Jaguar XK120 and a cherry red Allard K2, both six-figure specimens, were separated by a periwinkle Citroen H-Type work van. Across the avenue, these outliers were echoed by a trio of Citroen Traction Avant sedans. Beyond these cars was the venerable French bistro Orsay, its mahogany-stained front capped by a cloth awning featuring Parisian Metro-esque Art Nouveau lettering. Between the curb and façade, a familiar sidewalk scuttle defined the scene as an NYC film shoot. Craft services tables were piled with soda cans and snack bags, PAs with clipboards attempted to reroute recalcitrant pedestrians, techs held aloft parachute-sized plane reflectors to capture the light.

Who’s the Boss? is a classic sitcom that lasted for eight seasons, from 1984 to 1992. There had been interest in bringing back the characters with a new sequel series. However, the production has just received an important update. Interestingly enough, there had been other attempts to give the series a spin-off over the years.
The Project Had Been In Development Since 2020
The original series starred Tony Danza as Tony Micelli, a baseball player who becomes a housekeeper for advertising exec Angela, played by Judith Light. Alyssa Milano played Tony’s daughter Samantha while Danny Pintauro played Angela’s son Jonathan. Katherine Helmond also played Angela’s mother Mona, who many fans joked was the real “boss” of the show.

Queens is in the building! Fran Drescher, best known for her role as Fran Fine on “The Nanny” and for her current role as president of SAG-AFTRA, is teaming up with another Queens booster, Josh Safdie. Drescher has signed on to play Timothée Chalamet’s character’s mother in Safdie’s ping-pong drama “Marty Supreme,” Variety reports.

Little is known about the movie’s plot just yet. However, it has been described as a “fictional work set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.”

Fran Drescher is joining Josh Safdie’s A24 movie, Marty Supreme.
The SAG-AFTRA President will star opposite Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, The Creator, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary a.k.a Mr. Wonderful and Abel Ferrara.
The original screenplay written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein is based loosely on Marty Reisman’s life, set in the world of 1950s Ping Pong culture. Reisman was known to be unconventional in the sport, yet won two U.S. Men’s Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960 and more than 20 international and national titles. He became famous for mastering the hardbat style, a traditional style of table tennis that uses a racket without a sponge layer to emphasize control and spin over speed and power. His mastery of the sport earned him a reputation as one of table tennis’ last greats of that era.

SAG-AFTRA has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to represent intimacy coordinators in bargaining with the major studios.
The move is the latest step in a five-year effort by the union to professionalize the role of intimacy coordinators, who act as liaisons between performers and the production during the filming of sex scenes.
Getting Nlrb recognition would allow SAG-AFTRA to bargain for minimum pay and working conditions.
“We have no protections,” said Marci Liroff, who has worked as an intimacy coordinator in film and TV. “And we have no health insurance. We have no pension.”
HBO requires intimacy coordinators for filming sex scenes, but there is no such requirement industrywide. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA contract includes a provision requiring producers to use “best efforts” to hire an Ic for scenes involving nudity or sex acts. The provision also says that if a performer requests an Ic, the producer must...

After years of work to make intimacy coordinators an industry standard in film and television, SAG-AFTRA has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to be the official union reps for all intimacy coordinators in negotiations with major studios.
“Working in scenes involving nudity or physical intimacy is some of the most vulnerable work an actor can do. Intimacy coordinators not only provide assistance in navigating these scenes, but they also create a safety net for performers ensuring consent and protection throughout the entire process,” SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said in a Wednesday statement.
“Shifting the power imbalance that has been ingrained over a century is challenging but important work. Work that can be done even more effectively with the backing of a union,” she continued. “Intimacy coordinators have our backs on set and now it’s our turn to have theirs.”

Two years after SAG-AFTRA indicated that it wanted to bring intimacy coordinators into the union, the labor group has taken a first step toward making that goal a reality.
On Wednesday, the performers union said it had filed a petition for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board. SAG-AFTRA is seeking to bargain nationally on behalf of intimacy coordinators employed by Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers member companies, the entertainment industry’s top studios and streamers.
The move arrives after the union has spent years attempting to regulate the burgeoning professional space, which ascended in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Intimacy coordinators are responsible for choreographing intimate scenes, and those involving nudity, on sets, as well as facilitating a dialogue between performers and creatives relating to this work.

SAG-AFTRA is taking the next step toward organizing intimacy coordinators.
The guild has filed an election petition with the National Labor Relations Board to represent the group in any dealings with the major studios, it revealed on Wednesday, in what it calls a “natural evolution of the union’s commitment to help build a stable and safe future for our members.”
In 2022, SAG-AFTRA passed a resolution to create a path toward offering membership to intimacy coordinators, and this appears to be that plan in action.

Updated, with governor signing additional legislation: California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two bills today designed to give greater protections to performers and others over the use of their digital likenesses during their lives and to their estates.
Newsom signed the legislation at the Los Angeles headquarters of SAG-AFTRA, which has been one of the major champions of the new laws.
“We’re making sure that no one turns over their name, image and likeness to unscrupulous people without representation or union advocacy,” Newsom said.
Ab 1836 expands the scope of the state’s postmortem right of publicity, including the use of digital replicas, meaning that an estate’s permission would be needed to use such technology to re-create the voice and likeness of a deceased person. There are exceptions for news, public affairs and sports broadcasts, as well as for other uses such as satire, comment, criticism and parody and for certain documentary,...

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law two bills supported by SAG-AFTRA granting individuals greater control over the use of their voice and likeness.
The Guild sponsored both bills and has been a leading Hollywood advocate of AI guardrails. It secured some measure of protections for performers during contract renewal negotiations with Hollywood studios, streamers and networks last year, following months-long strike action and fiery rhetoric from both sides.
Tuesday’s signing ceremony at SAG-AFTRA’s Los Angeles headquarters enacted Ab 2602, which requires informed consent by performers prior to specified use of digital replicas of their voice or likeness in place of actual services.

Using an AI-generated digital replica to replace the contributions of an actor or performer’s voice or likeness — whether that individual is living or dead — is now against the law in California.
California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday signed a pair of bills that extend SAG-AFTRA’s recently won protections for AI into California law.
The first bill, Ab 1836, “prohibits the use of a deceased person’s voice or likeness in digital replicas without the prior consent of their estate,” according to SAG-AFTRA. The second, Ab 2602, “prohibits contractual provisions that would allow for the use of a digital replica of an individual’s voice or likeness in place of the individual’s actual services,” unless the individual gave their consent to a clear, specific description of how the AI would be used.

SAG-AFTRA members Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Susan Sarandon, Melissa Barrera and Cynthia Nixon are among the hundreds of union members calling on their organization’s leadership to keep people from being blacklisted for their views on Palestine.
In a statement provided with an open letter from organization SAG-AFTRA and Sister Guild Members for Ceasefire, members claim their numerous attempts to communicate with leadership about their concerns and work on a ceasefire statement together have been consistently ignored. When asked, SAG-AFTRA declined to comment on the claim or the letter.
Following Hamas’ Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel, SAG-AFTRA released a statement on Oct. 13, 2023, in which the union stated it “deplores and condemns the horrific acts of aggression against the Israeli people.”
In the open letter, which has been signed by more than 700 people from various unions in the industry, the group addressed SAG-AFTRA’s statement. The letter states that since then,...

Brooke Shields was elected president of Actors’ Equity in late May, and now heads the union of more than 51,000 actors and stage managers on Broadway and nationwide.
It’s the first union role for the longtime actress, who is largely known for her on-screen roles, but has also appeared five times on Broadway.
Now, a few months in, Shields spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about why she chose to add the role, an unpaid, volunteer position, into the mix of her busy life, which includes a new business, new book and acting gigs, and her priorities for her four-year term.
How’s it going so far?
It’s going extremely well. It’s a huge learning curve. Everyone involved has been extremely helpful in giving me background and support so that nothing is falling through the cracks. Just constantly, I’m reminded about the importance of not just the union and all of its members,...

Even Elon Musk wants to see California legislation to safeguard against the unrestricted rise of artificial intelligence and today politicians in Sacramento moved one giant step closer to protecting actors from a virtual afterlife of sorts.
On a third reading, the state Senate Tuesday passed a bill that would require studios, streamers and other employers to seek specific permission from performers to create digital replicas.
Well before Assembly Bill 2602 was introduced back in April, the bill has been strongly supported by SAG-AFTRA. On all political fronts, the guild has pressed over the year for federal and state legislation to codify many of the provisions in their strike ending agreement with the AMPTP last fall.
“We are thrilled that one of our top legislative priorities, Bill Ab 2602 has passed in the State of California,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree Ireland told Deadline tonight. “The bill...

A bipartisan group of senators officially introduced a long-anticipated bill on Wednesday designed to protect peoples’ voices and visual likenesses from being exploited with artificial intelligence re-creations without their permission.
Senators Chris Coons (D-de), Marsha Blackburn (R-tn), Amy Klobuchar (D-mn) and Thom Tillis introduced the Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe (No Fakes) Act on Wednesday, about eight months after first introducing a discussion draft of that bill last October.

The British sister union of SAG-AFTRA is standing in “total solidarity” with its U.S. counterparts after a strike was called against major video game studios.
SAG-AFTRA had been in talks over a new contract agreement for close to two years. It would cover voice and performance capture workers on titles from Disney Character Voices, Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Warner Bros. Games, Insomniac Games and more. But an impasse over artificial intelligence concerns has resulted in industrial action. “We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse AI to the detriment of our members. Enough is enough,” stated SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher. “When these companies get serious about offering an agreement our members can live — and work — with, we will be here, ready to negotiate.”
Now, Equity, the U.K’s performing arts and entertainment trade union, has weighed in. Made up of 50,000 actors, singers, dancers,...
