Word from buyers this past week has been that the movie — which is filming in New York — comes with an eyebrow raising $90M budget. We hear that’s exaggerated, however, and that $70M gross is more accurate.

That still makes the project the most expensive new package on sale at this year’s AFM and makes it A24’s joint most-expensive production to date alongside Dwayne Johnson starrer The Smashing Machine, which is in post-production (and is another ‘sports biopic’ that doesn’t obviously scream big-budget). Variety leads the field in nominations for the 17th annual National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards. Timothée Chalamet surprised fans at his own look-alike contest in New York City on Sunday, where the rowdy event resulted in at least one arrest.

Chalamet posed for photos with several of his doppelgängers present at the event — many of whom were dressed as the actor’s most famous characters, including Willy Wonka and Dune‘s Paul Atreides. The Associated Press reported general chaos surrounding the event, where Chalamet was flanked by body guards and some fans seemed to mistake look-alikes for the real actor.

The contest had been previously advertised on flyers around New York and was one of several doppelgängers events hosted by YouTuber Anthony Po, with a $50 prize for the winner. Look-alikes were interviewed onstage about their plans with Kylie Jenner, Chalamet’s presumed girlfriend, as well as their French proficiency (the Little Women actor is bilingual). Miles Mitchell, a look-alike dressed as Willy Wonka, eventually took first place.

Timothée Chalamet was in good company during a visit with fans this weekend, where he was more than likely asked to call them by his name.

On Sunday, the Oscar nominee made a surprise appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Park, where hundreds of fans gathered to compete in a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest.

In videos shared to social media, several doppelgängers posed for photos in the sea of people before the Dune star joined them, resulting in some genuinely shocked faces. A frenzy broke out as he hugged his admirers and posed with them.

Incidentally, Chalamet didn’t win the contest, arriving with a mustache and a shorter head of hair — after portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

The contest took place after flyers popped up around the city with a Qr link to the event’s Partiful page and the offer of a $50 cash prize.

More than two months into SAG-AFTRA’s strike against video game companies, the union and the bargaining group representing employers have set a return to the bargaining table.

The negotiations will continue on Oct. 23, the parties said in a joint statement on Tuesday. The companies included in the employer negotiating group include Activision Productions Inc., Disney Character Voices Inc., Electronic Arts Productions Inc., Formosa Interactive LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., WB Games Inc, Take 2 Productions Inc., Blindlight LLC and Formosa Interactive LLC.

SAG-AFTRA has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to represent intimacy coordinators in bargaining with the major studios.

The move is the latest step in a five-year effort by the union to professionalize the role of intimacy coordinators, who act as liaisons between performers and the production during the filming of sex scenes.

Getting Nlrb recognition would allow SAG-AFTRA to bargain for minimum pay and working conditions.

“We have no protections,” said Marci Liroff, who has worked as an intimacy coordinator in film and TV. “And we have no health insurance. We have no pension.”

HBO requires intimacy coordinators for filming sex scenes, but there is no such requirement industrywide. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA contract includes a provision requiring producers to use “best efforts” to hire an Ic for scenes involving nudity or sex acts. SAG-AFTRA is seeking to bargain nationally on behalf of intimacy coordinators employed by Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers member companies, the entertainment industry’s top studios and streamers.

The move arrives after the union has spent years attempting to regulate the burgeoning professional space, which ascended in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Intimacy coordinators are responsible for choreographing intimate scenes, and those involving nudity, on sets, as well as facilitating a dialogue between performers and creatives relating to this work.

“Working in scenes involving nudity or physical intimacy is some of the most vulnerable work an actor can do.

SAG-AFTRA is taking the next step toward organizing intimacy coordinators.

The guild has filed an election petition with the National Labor Relations Board to represent the group in any dealings with the major studios, it revealed on Wednesday, in what it calls a “natural evolution of the union’s commitment to help build a stable and safe future for our members.”

In 2022, SAG-AFTRA passed a resolution to create a path toward offering membership to intimacy coordinators, and this appears to be that plan in action.

Newsom signed the legislation at the Los Angeles headquarters of SAG-AFTRA, which has been one of the major champions of the new laws.

“We’re making sure that no one turns over their name, image and likeness to unscrupulous people without representation or union advocacy,” Newsom said.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law two bills supported by SAG-AFTRA granting individuals greater control over the use of their voice and likeness.

The Guild sponsored both bills and has been a leading Hollywood advocate of AI guardrails. It secured some measure of protections for performers during contract renewal negotiations with Hollywood studios, streamers and networks last year, following months-long strike action and fiery rhetoric from both sides.

Tuesday’s signing ceremony at SAG-AFTRA’s Los Angeles headquarters enacted Ab 2602, which requires informed consent by performers prior to specified use of digital replicas of their voice or likeness in place of actual services.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom visited SAG-AFTRA headquarters on Monday to sign two bills regulating the use of performances generated by artificial intelligence.

The actors’ union lobbied for passage of the legislation, which builds on the protections won during the four-month actors’ strike against the major studios last year.

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday signed a pair of bills that extend SAG-AFTRA’s recently won protections for AI into California law.

The first bill, Ab 1836, “prohibits the use of a deceased person’s voice or likeness in digital replicas without the prior consent of their estate,” according to SAG-AFTRA. The second, Ab 2602, “prohibits contractual provisions that would allow for the use of a digital replica of an individual’s voice or likeness in place of the individual’s actual services,” unless the individual gave their consent to a clear, specific description of how the AI would be used.
