Searchlight Pictures is celebrating a milestone anniversary with … T-shirts!
The studio, which is marking the moment with a variety of initiatives and partners from Ore-Ida and Warby Parker to Hitching Post Winery, has teamed up once again with buzzy Los Angeles brand Hiro Clark to honor its 30th year in business. (The two previously partnered on “Hello Stranger” shirts after the success of the critically acclaimed All of Us Strangers from Andrew Haigh.)
In doing so, Hiro Clark is offering a limited-edition collection of tees, five in total, that retail for $98 apiece in multiple color options. Here’s the part cinephiles need to know: The line of five honors Searchlight’s beloved films including Tamara Jenkins’ 1998 movie Slums of Beverly Hills, Kimberly Peirce’s 1999 film Boys Don’t Cry, Jared Hess’s 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine, and Scott Cooper’s 2009 film Crazy Heart.

Had I known about Angel Studios’ agenda-based filmmaking before, I probably would have tried to get out of this assignment. But since I’m already here, let us not get into that and talk about Sight, a very by-the-book, exhaustingly boring biopic directed by Andrew Hyatt. The only thing this film has going in its favor is its story—about renowned eye doctor Ming Wang. Dr. Wang has pretty much revolutionized the field of optometry, and the man certainly deserves a better biopic than this thing that I am finding difficult to call cinema. What’s even worse is how shamelessly the film asks you to fund the ticket for the next person, when it’s supposed to be about humans showing kindness. Anyway, Sight should work for you if you’re into straightforward comfort food kind of biographies (I’m clearly not).

Directed by Ty Roberts, You Gotta Believe is a heart-warming family sports drama set in the early 2000s. Written by Lane Garrison and Roberts himself, the film is a nostalgic throwback to the feel-good, underdog sports movies of the ’70s and ’80s.
Produced by a team that includes Byron Campbell and Houston Hill, the film features a stellar cast, with Hollywood stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear leading the charge.
Based on a true story, You Gotta Believe follows the underdog 2002 Fort Worth, Texas, Little League team. After dedicating their season to their ailing coach (and teammate’s father), these players embark on a miraculous journey that culminates in a record-breaking ESPN showdown. Luke Wilson plays the determined coach, while Greg Kinnear portrays a supportive but sceptical volunteer.
While You Gotta Believe treads familiar ground, it does so with a sincerity that feels refreshing in today’s cinematic landscape. The...

Based on the true story, You Gotta Believe (2024) combines sports adrenaline with the hope of humanity in a tribute to Bobby Ratliff, coach of the Westside Little League baseball team that became the All Stars and went all the way through the Little League World Series to the championship.
Sam Knight (Martin Roach), who owned a baseball memorabilia store that sold trading cards, played a big part in inspiring the team to rally around something bigger than themselves. That turned out to be someone — Bobby (portrayed by Luke Wilson) — whose son Robert (Michael Cash) played on the team alongside the son of manager Jon Kelley (Greg Kinnear). These aren’t the only familiar faces you might recognize in the baseball film, as a particularly well-known one from a different classic sports story shows up in You Gotta Believe.

When Tim Miller's superhero film "Deadpool" was released in 2016, it felt like a breath of fresh air. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still standing astride the Earth like a mighty colossus, releasing gigantic hit films every few months. The MCU dominated the conversation like no other series of blockbusters before, generating so much online discourse that entire subgenres of journalism sprung up it its shadow. And the McU's fans were passionately defensive, often accusing any naysayers or critics of hating fun and being ignorant to what great cinema looked like.
When "Deadpool" came out, the MCU was coming off "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man," and was gearing up for "Captain America: Civil War." The MCU was in its stride. "Deadpool" sought to stick out his foot and trip the genre, hoping to cause a stumble. "Deadpool" was a crass, ultra-violent, obscenity-laced R-rated comedy which featured scenes of the...

There isn’t much of a reason to remember the 2012 romantic comedy Stuck in Love – an independent production that, despite the presence of big-name actors including Jennifer Connelly and Greg Kinnear, grossed less than a million dollars worldwide.
There’s even less of a reason to remember Glen Powell in it, unless you were specifically on the lookout for his square jaw and sandy hair: then just 23 years old, the jobbing Texan actor played a minor role in the ensemble, billed in the credits merely as “Good-Looking Frat Guy”.

Well Go has revealed the official trailer for a kids baseball movie called You Gotta Believe, a cheesy uplifting tale of a true story of a Little League team in 2002. This one is set to hit theaters in late August in just a few months - right around when school starts back up again. Based on the inspiring true story: after dedicating the season to a teammate's ailing father, a group of underdogs from Fort Worth, Texas, takes its Cinderella run all the way to a record-breaking showdown in the 2002 Little League World Series. This baseball movie "tells the heartwarming story of a group of young boys who, after a teammate's father is diagnosed with cancer, really banded together and learned to play the game they loved for a cause much greater than themselves." James L. Brooks' 1997 dramedy "As Good As It Gets" was a massive awards darling when it came out. The film is about an intensely misanthropic author named Melvin (Jack Nicholson) who is deeply afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorder. When his neighbor, Simon (Greg Kinnear), is horrible assaulted by thieves, Melvin agrees to care for Verdell, Simon's dog. This is the first step in Melvin's very gradual opening up to warmer aspects of humanity. He's still a cruel a-hole, but by the end of the movie, he becomes a lovable a-hole. He is also redeemed by his relationship with a frustrated waitress named Carol (Helen Hunt), who hates him, and then hates that she sees the humanity in him.
"As Good As It Gets" was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Oscars for Nicholson and Hunt's performances. It was considered a minor scandal in 1998 when Brooks was not nominated for Best Director.

Warner Bros’ Furiosa opens in 715 locations, one of the widest openings of the year so far behind that of Studiocanal’s Back To Black (719) and fellow Warner Bros title Dune: Part Two (717).

As absurd as it is to say about a film that ends with an onscreen Qr code imploring viewers to “Pay It Forward,” “Sight” probably would be better if it was preachier. At the very least, it would be more memorable.
The latest project from Angel Studios, “Sight” certainly looks and feels like the type of cheap contemporary Christian cinema that both its production company and its director specialize in. But whenever the movie looks like it might go full Christian medical drama a la the inexplicably Oscar-nominated “Breakthrough,” it always pulls back from launching into a sermon. Sure, there’s a kindly nun and an unbearable syrupy sweet church scene, but by the end of “Sight,” it’s not particularly clear how devout main character Ming Wang is to Christianity, or if he’s even a believer in the first place.

Call “Sight” a stealth faith-based movie and you won’t be far off the mark. For the most part, it’s a respectful but unremarkable biopic about Dr. Ming Wang, a Chinese-born, Nashville-based eye surgeon whose innovative use of amniotic membrane contact lenses has helped restore the eyesight of millions of patients, many of them children. But the end, which contains a Qr code much like distributor Angel Studios’ summer blockbuster “Sound of Freedom” did last year, features the real Dr. Wang — one of the film’s executive producers — in a sequence where he credits his success as having been possible “only with God’s grace,” after he was able to “open myself to God.”

For decades, Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been a hugely busy weekend at the box office, often offering the biggest of franchise sequels — or in this case, two potential franchise prequels? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The Memorial Day bump that has helped so many franchise installments before will certainly be in play for George Miller‘s return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel that tells the earlier story of Charlize Theron‘s character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, joined by Chris Hemsworth as a new antagonist called Dementus, as well a mix of new characters and ones that appeared in “Fury Road.”

“Garfiosa”? “Furiofield”?
Whatever the portmanteau for this Memorial Day weekend’s dual release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie,” the two newcomers are aiming to jolt the sluggish summer season.
“Furiosa,” the fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, looks to lead the way with $40 million to $45 million from 3,750 venues over the four-day holiday weekend. Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” should trail in second with $30 million to $35 million from 4,000 venues between Friday and Monday. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 will be tough given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million.
Warner Bros. spent $168 million on “Furiosa,” not including the many millions to market the movie. It’s not expected to live up to the debut of its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which captured $45 million over three days. That film, led...

There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.
With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. More big movies give people more reasons to attend. Unfortunately, both titles are not Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M all-time Memorial Day opening record) nor is it last year’s The Little Mermaid stateside start ($118.8M) in their mass appeal.
Furiosa is both a reboot of the Mad Max franchise and a prequel as Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the one armed action of Charlize Theron, who fans of the George Miller franchise are still rabid about when its comes to the desert vigilante’s big screen portrayal. After a...

Larry David’s beloved comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is gearing up for a grand showing at the Primetime Emmys. The 12th and final season of the HBO/Max series has submitted for 35 nominations, including the top prize for outstanding comedy series.
Playing a fictionalized version of himself, David is again vying for the lead comedy actor category. He hopes to unseat last year’s winner and current frontrunner, Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear.” Though David is a two-time Emmy winner for writing and creating “Seinfeld,” he has yet to win as an actor despite six nominations, the last of which came in 2008.
Supporting actors J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, two-time former nominee Cheryl Hines and Tracey Ullman will also compete in the main acting categories, as well as a posthumous submission for Richard Lewis, who died in February.

Nowadays, in the era of the prominent box office domination of the superhero movie franchises, made by Marvel, DC and other studios, it’s hard to amaze the audience with a movie following a person with supernatural abilities. The subgenre starts to repeat itself and to use the same tropes in every subsequent movie again and again.
Back in 1999, there was a star-studded comedy that made fun of the typical superhero movies long before the Avengers fever and even before Prime Video’s The Boys series, also appearing to be a satire to the MCU and other films about courageous supermen.
Its plot focuses on the tragedy happening in the fictional Champion City: it lost its main defender, a superhero named Captain Amazing. He was relentlessly captured by the villain Casanova Frankenstein, and it leaves the town in a vulnerable position.

It's set for a US debut in June after opening first in the UK this month. A boy discovers that he can manipulate time using a family heirloom - an old grandfather clock. He teams up his siblings in returning to the time of their parents' initial separation in hopes of changing the outcome and stopping them from divorcing. Oh boy, that sounds awkward. Actors Isla Fisher & Greg Kinnear star as the parents, with an ensemble cast including Ryan Guzman, Shay Rudolph, Amir Talai, Alphonso McAuley, Easton Rocket Sweda, Sarah Jane MacKay, Mason Shea Joyce, and Eric Tiede. This plays a bit better than the other trailer we posted before, but it still seems like made-for-streaming cheesiness.
