Beefy, small-eyed British character actor with a theatre background who caroused with the likes of Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole in his early years, making a dent in film as tough guys with a soft spot in war drama.

He and Kenji Takaki were the only cast members of the original stage production of Jungle Fighters (1961) to reprise their roles in the film version.
