The series has become a staple on the network and is undoubtedly one of ABC’s most successful offerings.

In fact, The Rookie Season 6 Episode 1 garnered a whopping 11.9 million viewers across all platforms after its long-awaited return after a dual strike.

The Rookie Season 7 will look different as cast member Tru Valentino has exited the show as Aaron Thorsen.

Tru joined The Rookie in Season 4 as new boot Aaron, who was a famous TikTok personality acquitted of murder that made headlines.

Taking to Instagram after news of his impending departure broke, Tru said goodbye to fans.

“I will always cherish my time on The Rookie but couldn’t be more excited for what the future has in store,” he began his message.

True went on to praise the friends he made on the show and the opportunities he was given.

“I adore the friends and relationships made while being there. It was such and amazing opportunity and feel so lucky to have had the last 3 seasons,” Tru expressed.

The Rookie is still going strong five seasons in. The same can't be said for The Rookie: Feds. The spinoff had a lot of momentum coming out of the gate, but the Hollywood strikes complicated the renewal process. In the end, ABC wound up pulling the plug after only one season.

It was a disappointing development for both Rookie: Feds fans and the cast of the flagship series. Nathan Fillion, the star of The Rookie, was particularly bummed to see plans to expand the franchise fall by the wayside. That being said, there is some good news.

Deric Augustine and Patrick Keleher have joined the cast of “The Rookie” as recurring guest stars in Season 7, which is set for a mid-season premiere on ABC. The news was announced during Disney’s presentation at the summer 2024 Television Critics Association press tour.

Augustine will play Miles, who is described as “one of the newest rookies at the LAPD. As a Texas transfer, Miles is a ‘rookie’ despite being a two-year veteran of the force.” Keleher will play Seth, another new rookie who “seems like the ideal police officer, but the job requires quick, decisive action — something that doesn’t come naturally to Seth.”

Augustine’s credits include playing Muhammad Ali in the first two seasons of “Godfather of Harlem” on MGM+ and Clay in Seasons 4 and 5 of “All American” on the CW. He has also appeared in “Swagger,” “Shameless,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “Cloak & Dagger” and “Queen Sugar.

The renewal comes amid strong ratings for Season 6. The Alexi Hawley-created crime drama kicked off its sixth season with its most-watched episode in nearly six years, with 11.92 million Total Viewers across platforms after 35 days of viewing. That is up 14% from its season five average and marks the show’s strongest MP35 number since Oct. 23, 2018, according to the network and Nielsen.

In adults 18-49, the series premiere notched a 2.90 rating — up 27% from its prior season MP +35 average (2.29 rating). This is the strongest MP +35 rating for the popular drama since its first season (2.91 rating) on Nov. 13, 2018. On linear, the series had its best L+35 performance in Total Viewers (7.23 million) since March 28, 2023 (7.26 million).

The exciting news dropped Monday.

The Rookie moved to Tuesdays earlier this year and instantly increased in the ratings.

Season to date, The Rookie Season 5 is averaging 3.9 million viewers and a 0.43 rating in Live + Same Day metrics.

With a week of delayed viewing factored in, those numbers rise to 6.5 million viewers and a 0.7 rating.

Simply put, the show is a strong performer for the network, so a renewal was never out of the question.

ABC has renewed its police drama The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion, for a sixth season in 2023-24. The series will cross the 100-episode milestone early next season. The pickup comes two weeks ahead of the show’s fifth season finale on May 2.

The Rookie is the third veteran series ABC has renewed for 2023-24, joining Abbott Elementary and Grey’s Anatomy.

The Rookie has long been a decent ratings draw for ABC but saw its numbers jump with a move to Tuesday nights in January (where it leads into its spinoff, The Rookie: Feds). The show’s same-day audience has grown by 31 percent compared to its fall average, when it aired on Sundays. The Tuesday episodes have improved the 8 p.m. Tuesday spot by 40 percent in total viewers and 17 percent in adults 18-49 over the same time frame last year. Multiplatform ratings have also risen over last season.

The Rookie writers have never shied away from putting the ABC show’s characters in significant danger. And it looks like the upcoming finale of The Rookie Season 5 will feature one main cast member’s life on the line. But only time will tell if they survive to see another season.
