We all know Winnie The Pooh as a character who has been a friend to many children over the years. Pinocchio was no different, with a story that made many children’s childhood worth remembering. But with the release of the Winnie The Pooh universe, things have changed.
Gone are the days where they were every child’s comfort character. For a new generation, there name will give birth to a feeling of terror. But the Universe must have evoked feelings of awe within Steven Spielberg for its stellar use of animatronics.

Anyone who enjoys having their childhood memories warped will be glad to hear that "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2" is now available to watch at home. When the original "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" debuted in 2023, there was significant buzz around the film. Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield had taken advantage of A.A. Milne's beloved bear transitioning into the public domain, and promptly set about trying to ruin everyone's childhood with a twisted take on the material that saw Pooh reimagined as a slasher killer. That all amounted to a film with a 3% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Indeed, we at /Film dubbed "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" a humorless bloodbath. But Frake-Waterfield didn't let the bad reviews stop him and a sequel was quickly churned out. "Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2" arrived in 2024 and saw Pooh joined by more of his bloodthirsty chums, including Owl and Tigger.

Winnie-the-Pooh is headed to Prime Video with a brand-new television series, a holiday movie, and five new specials. Four seasons with 104 episodes have been ordered for the animated series. The new projects will be based on the classic character created by English author A. A. Milne in the 1920s.
Disney is not connected to the new projects. The studio has produced numerous animated movies, featurettes, and TV series over the past sixty years. However, the copyright on the original version of the Winnie-the-Pooh character expired in the United States in January 2022, making it possible for other outlets to make their own Pooh projects. The copyright expires in the UK in 2027, aka the year after the 70th anniversary of Milne's death.

Amazon will premiere an animated holiday movie, five holiday specials and 104 episodes of a series rolled out over four years through the subscription kids network Kartoon Channel!, which is distributed through Prime Video Channels.
Kartoon Studios, which has put the plan into action after the original Winnie books entered the public domain two years ago, is also preparing a major merchandising push through an agreement with nationwide retail distributor Alliance Entertainment and a global consumer products rollout. “Capitalizing on the enormous equity inherent in A.A. Milne’s Winnie-The-Pooh, the unique designs and storytelling, as well as the production efficiency by harnessing AI, Kartoon Studios’ new iteration of the timeless brand will have an exceptional array of attributes that we believe can lead to extraordinary profitability for the company,” said Kartoon Studios Chairman and CEO Andy Heyward.

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023… and sure, the movie racked up the Razzies, but it’s money that matters, and that’s why Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 was made and given a theatrical release earlier this year. We know the Australia-based company Umbrella Entertainment will be giving the film a special edition Blu-ray release next month, and now it has been announced (via Collider) that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 will be receiving a VOD release in the United States on June 26th!
A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, and that’s how Frake-Waterfield was able to make these movies happen, no permission required.

Variety has the details of “Pinocchio: Unstrung,” which is selling in Cannes via Premiere Entertainment. Like “Blood and Honey,” Rhys Frake-Waterfield will direct the film, which which have little reliance on VFX and feature the character of Pinocchio as a practical doll (casting for Geppetto will soon be announced). A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, paving the way for the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, which in turn kicked off the Twisted Childhood Universe, consisting of other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain, so Mickey-based horror movies also started springing up. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and...

There is not much known about Prince Harry’s relationship with is three nephews: Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, who just turned six. When all three were born, Harry still had a decent relationship with his brother and sister-in-law, Prince William and Kate Middleton, but so much has changed over the last five years.
Harry seemingly used to spoil his niece and nephews, though, with rumors that he once paid nearly $10,000 for one of Prince Louis’ Christening gifts.

Establishing a shared cinematic universe is hard. Take Warner Bros. and DC's attempt at matching the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for instance. Though it had some commercial successes, the DC Extended Universe ultimately disintegrated over the course of several recent box office bombs that included superheroic flop "The Flash." Then, there was Universal, with its ill-fated Dark Universe, which would have seen updated takes on classic Universal monsters inhabiting a shared timeline that would ultimately lead to some sort of monster team-up. Unfortunately, the whole thing failed almost instantly with the disappointment that was 2017's "The Mummy."
Now, with the almighty MCU even struggling to maintain its dominance amid the deluge of "content" being pumped out in its name, it seems harder than ever to construct and maintain a successful shared cinematic universe. But that won't stop horror director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who is now threatening an entire interconnected...

But now Variety has been able to confirm that, in addition to Poohniverse, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3 is also moving ahead. This sequel will have a bigger budget than either of its predecessors, and “will introduce new characters from the original Winnie-the-Pooh stories, including Rabbit, the heffalumps and the woozles.

Even though "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2" just hit theaters for a limited engagement through Fathom Events, Jagged Edge Productions has announced that a third installment in the franchise is already underway. The so-called Twisted Childhood Universe continues to expand by the day.
According to Variety, Rhys Frake-Waterfield and Scott Chambers of Jagged Edge Productions have confirmed a third installment in the budding franchise based on the beloved characters created by A.A. Recently, you might have heard the news that there are only two perfect horror movies and only two perfect sci-fi movies ... at least according to Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, the Tomatometer bestowed a perfect 100 percent score upon only a handful of films, obviously signaling that these movies were unquestionably perfect. Now, it seems we could have a new addition to the hallowed 100 percent club: "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2."
Yes, you read that right. But how? In 2023, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield took A.A. Milne and E.H. Winnie the Pooh has been a childhood icon of many for years. Known for his kindness of heart and naiveness, the yellow bear from A. A. Milne and E.H. Shepard’s imagination has been a comfort character for countless children for decades. And so to have it reimagined as a horror and serial murderer character is an absolutely horrendous and baffling idea.

For more than 40 years now, moviegoers have lined up to see the spectacle of people being slaughtered by a psycho with a chainsaw, a psycho in a Halloween mask, a psycho in a goalie mask, a psycho with burnt skin and a striped shirt and fedora, or a psycho with S&m nails in his face. So why not a psycho Winnie the Pooh?

Variety is the bearer of this news, whether a blessing or a curse. As a longtime horror writer, I’m all for more low-budget slashers with a gimmick. So, how much of a good thing is too much?
We’ll find out soon, for sure. The Poohniverse includes Tinkerbell, Bambi, The Mad Hatter, and Sleeping Beauty. This massive horror movie version of the MCU will land sometime in 2025.
What’s the overarching storyline of this cavalcade of free-to-use figures? They’re all out to get the survivors of the earlier films (including the ones that are yet to be released).

The makers of Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey 1 & 2 are at work on another twisted take on A.A. Milne’s children’s story.
The prolific low-budget genre labels Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Films have unveiled plans to swing their bloody axe again with Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, a slasher horror pic set to shoot this year ahead of a 2025 release.
“It will be complete carnage. We are heavily influenced by Freddy Vs Jason and The Avengers. We would love to see a horror movie where the villains group together and are going after their survivors. We have some incredible set pieces in mind and some sequences I think will truly shock people,” Jagged Edge producer Rhys Frake-Waterfield said in a statement.

A Winnie the Pooh slasher film is getting the sequel treatment, and the newly-minted “Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu)” is getting its first major crossover event.
Just months after Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain in 2022, Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios made waves for producing Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a slasher film depicting A.A. Milne’s beloved characters of the Hundred Acre Wood as feral, blood-hungry killers. Despite very, very negative critical reception (it has a 3% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film made $5 million at the box office on a $50,000 budget, and led to other planned horror films featuring children’s characters now in the public domain like Bambi, Pinocchio, and the characters of Peter Pan.
Now, a grand cinematic crossover event with these characters is imminent: Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble will hit theaters in 2025. As reported by Variety, the Avengers-style low-budget horror crossover will see Winnie the Pooh join villainous forces with Bambi,...

Six years after “Avengers: Infinity War,” another film is vying to become the most ambitious crossover event in history, this time in the lower-budget cinematic realm.
The filmmakers behind “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” — the micro-budget slasher that sparked headlines for turning A. A. Milne’s jovial bear into a feral serial killer and made an incredible $5.2 million at the box office after costing under $50,000 to make — have unveiled “Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble,” bringing together Pooh and various other beloved children’s characters gone bad.
Where “Avengers: Infinity War” had Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Panther and Thanos, “Poohniverse” — from prolific horror collaborators Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios — will team Winnie the Pooh with murderous versions of figures including Bambi, Tinkerbell, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Tigger, Piglet, The Mad Hatter and Sleeping Beauty for an IP-bludgeoning frenzy due for release in 2025. The director of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” has taken his film’s clean sweep of the Razzie Awards on the (bloodied) chin.
The feature — a slasher horror that caused a stir last year for its childhood-bludgeoning premise in which A.A. Milne’s beloved, cuddly bear and his sidekick Piglet go on a cannibalistic rampage — dominated the awards, winning the top prize of worst picture, plus director and screenplay (for Rhys Frake-Waterfield), screen couple (for Pooh and Piglet) and remake/rip-off/sequel.
“I’m surprised our micro-budget film is being compared to Hollywood, but nevertheless I don’t mind the dubious honor as it places me in the same pool as directors whose work I admire so much,” Frake-Waterfield told Variety.
The Razzies generally take aim at the expensive flops and fails of studios and A-list stars, but — as Frake-Waterfield notes — in focusing its attention on “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,...

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is among those entries in the slasher film category that horrifyingly re-conceptualize iconic children’s properties and characters that were (and continue to be) symbols of child-like familiarity and nostalgia in most audiences’ lives. Development of the horror movie started in 2022, the same year that A.A. Milne’s 1926 book about the titular anthropomorphic teddy bear went into public domain.
Although the endeavor sparked public intrigue at the peak of its announcement, the responses it received at the time were divisive.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
Upon its release, partly due to its viral stature, the Rhys Frake-Waterfield-helmed and written premise was triumphant at the box office, given its $100,000 budget. However, it failed to resonate with critics and several viewers and earned itself a 3% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rhys Frake-Waterfield's "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" took advantage of A.A. Milne's beloved 1926 children's novel lapsing into the public domain, wresting control of the titular character from the claw-like clutches of the Disney corporation. Frake-Waterfield, to squeeze out any sense of treacly sentimentality that Winnie-the-Pooh possessed, elected to re-imagine the silly ol' bear as a vicious mute murderer picking off hapless 20-somethings in a remote manse in the English countryside. It seems that when Christopher Robin grew up, he left Pooh and his pals in the woods without the means to feed themselves. Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, and the others quickly resorted to cannibalism, went feral, and swore to kill any humans who crossed their path.
While one might appreciate the legal temerity Frake-Waterfield took, transforming kiddie corporate IP into publicly-owned bloody mayhem, "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" was a pretty forthrightly terrible film. The film only cost $100,000 to make and its cheapness is evident.

When word came out that Mickey Mouse would be entering the public domain on January 1st, it was inevitable that we would be getting some sort of offbeat spin on the character. And it took about, oh {checks watch}…well, not very long at all. While we’re sure there is more lewd content all over the internet already, we’re focused on the more mainstream Mickey Mouse movie, titled Mickey’s Mouse Trap.
The trailer for this Mickey Mouse movie puts its central characters in an amusement park, with one character declaring, “There’s blood all over the jungle gym!” Soon after, Mickey gets his first kill. But don’t expect to see the mouse in his signature getup of red shorts and oversized yellow shoes, as that version didn’t enter the public domain on New Year’s Day. Instead, the interpretation leans into the Steamboat Willie-era Mickey.

On January 1, 2024, the original incarnation of Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Willie, entered into the public domain. Steamboat Willie, born in 1928, is the crown jewel of thousands of pieces of intellectual property that have just seen their copyright expire, a crop that also includes the original German version of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando,” an iteration of Peter Pan, and more.
Monday’s date had been circled on the calendar of many opportunistic filmmakers, and not 48 hours after New Year’s Eve turned to New Year’s Day, several Steamboat Willie-inspired projects — all of them some iteration of twisted, slasher horror — have been announced. This one already put out a trailer, this one (from the guy who did a horror parody of “The Grinch”) put out a press release, and this one is a horror video game based on Mickey — er, Willie — the most popular cartoon character in the world.

Mickey Mouse has got a knife. With those simple words, and the corresponding horror movie trailer which goes with them, it’s become clear that the 21st century is about to get weird. Well, weirder, at any rate.
Nearly a hundred years after Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks animated the short film “Steamboat Willie,” which introduced a rodent who helped Walt build an empire, the same short cartoon has entered the public domain as of Jan. 1, 2024. And already there have been as many new Mickey Mouse slasher projects announced as there’ve been days in the New Year.
The first and clearly most advanced is Mickey’s Mouse Trap, a film set in a fictional amusement park where teenagers are picked off one at a time by a man with uncomfortably familiar-looking mouse ears. The logline promises (or warns?): “It’s Alex’s 21st Birthday, but she’s stuck...

The fraudulent Michelangelo who performed at Mar-a-Lago isn't the only imposter version of an iconic animated anthropomorphic animal on the loose at the dawn of 2024.
As of January 1 this year, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks's "Steamboat Willie" -- the benchmark 1928 black-and-white cartoon short featuring Mickey Mouse in his earliest form -- has officially entered the public domain. That means it's open season for anyone and everyone who wants to use that iteration of the Walt Disney Company's mascot. So, naturally, there's already an influx of horror-themed films and even video games aiming to parody the rodent's family-friendly image. (Nobody tell them that Kevin Smith basically already did that 25 years ago with the Mickey-inspired Mooby the Golden Calf in "Dogma.")

A second, as-yet-untitled horror film centered on Steamboat Willie, the earliest iteration of Disney’s beloved children’s character Mickey Mouse, is in the works from director-producer Steven Lamorte and the producers of Terrifier 2, the team announced on Tuesday.

The earliest version of Mickey Mouse from 1928’s Steamboat Willie just entered public domain, allowing filmmakers free rein to give the character a new spin. One of the first projects to take advantage is a slasher flick titled Mickey’s Mouse Trap, in which the killer dons a Mickey Mouse mask while stalking victims in an amusement park.
As seen in the newly released trailer, Mickey’s Mouse Trap falls into similar territory as the Scream franchise, offering meta commentary about the horror genre. After one character says he’ll be right back, another comments, “Well, he’s dead. Like, if he was in a horror movie, you’d never say, ‘I’ll be right back,’ because then you don’t.” Watch it below.
The official synopsis reads: “It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her,...

The short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, 1928’s Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, and a handful of Mickey Mouse-themed horror projects have already been announced. The upcoming video game Infestation 88 will feature a monstrous version of Mickey, while horror movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap is also coming soon.

At 12:01 am this morning, the earliest iteration of one of the world’s most beloved children’s characters entered the public domain. Shortly thereafter, the trailer for a slasher film called Mickey’s Mouse Trap was posted online.

Well, that didn’t take long.
On the first day that Disney’s 1928 short Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, a trailer has dropped for a horror comedy film featuring none other than Mickey Mouse as the killer.
The synopsis for the film, called Mickey’s Mouse Trap, reads: “It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.”
The trailer features, yep, a person in a Mickey Mouse costume, wearing what resembles a hockey jersey without the letters, attacking a victim and stalking others inside a Chuck E. Cheese-type place (reminiscent of last year’s horror hit Five Nights at Freddy’s). There also is Scream-like self-awareness about the horror genre, including one...
On the first day that Disney’s 1928 short Steamboat Willie entered the public domain, a trailer has dropped for a horror comedy film featuring none other than Mickey Mouse as the killer.

As of today, the traditionally protective Walt Disney Co will have to deal with an onslaught of Mickey Mouse parodies, mockeries and likely rather explicit variations as the iconic character slips into the public domain.
Sorta.
In the sober light of 2024, Steamboat Willie, the 1928 short that effectively launched the empire that Walt built, can now be used by anyone and everyone. The legal status of Mickey and Minnie Mouse from Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy, from earlier that same year, has been long fought over and probably not something to which Disney was looking forward. Yet, in a new year that also sees Virginia Woolf’s groundbreaking Orlando, Peter Pan, Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus, Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman and Tigger from AA Milne’s The House at Pooh Corner now in the public domain, if you are anticipating a Steamboat Willie free-for-all, think again.
Besides Disney being notoriously litigious,...

Mickey Mouse, the iconic fi – oh, you don’t need a refresher on who Mickey Mouse is? Well, the Disney mascot is now officially in the public domain…under certain specifications. In short, you won’t be seeing him and Goofy slashing their way through Disney World anytime soon…
As U.S. copyright law says a work can enter the public domain 95 years after its publication, a form of Mickey Mouse will be made available for use by anyone. This chiefly concerns Steamboat Willie, which is generally considered the debut of Mickey Mouse, although Plane Crazy and The Gallopin’ Gaucho were both produced prior to the landmark short. As such, those films will also be in the public domain.
But the Mickey Mouse of Steamboat Willie is most definitely not the same as the Mickey Mouse we all identify. The 1928 version has more rat-like features, with an elongated nose, smaller...

Today, Jan. 1, isn’t just New Year’s Day — it’s also Public Domain Day, where thousands of cinematic treasures, literary classics, Great American Songbook selections, and works of art see their copyrights expire and enter the public domain.
The headliner this year is the fair use of Mickey Mouse — at least, the Steamboat Willie version of the beloved character — as that copyright expiration has been anticipated for years. However, there’s much more than just Mickey entering the public domain in 2024.
Jennifer Jenkins, Director of Duke’s Center for...

M-i-c-k-e-y will soon belong to you and me.
With several asterisks, qualifications and caveats, Mickey Mouse in his earliest form will be the leader of the band of characters, films and books that will become public domain as the year turns to 2024.
In a moment many close observers thought might never come, at least one version of the quintessential piece of intellectual property and perhaps the most iconic character in American pop culture will be free from Disney’s copyright as his first screen release, the 1928 short Steamboat Willie, featuring both Mickey and Minnie Mouse, becomes available for public use.
“This is it. This is Mickey Mouse. This is exciting because it’s kind of symbolic,” said Jennifer Jenkins, a professor of law and director of Duke’s Center for the Study of Public Domain, who writes an annual Jan. 1 column for “Public Domain Day.” ”I kind of feel like the pipe on the steamboat,...

The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

In the blissful infancy of YouTube back in 2006, one of the medium's earliest viral sensations was a video called "Scary Mary." YouTube creator Christopher Rule edited his own trailer for "Mary Poppins," Disney's 1964 musical classic. Instead of depicting the movie's family-friendly fantasy, though, Rule cut "Scary Mary" as a horror film. The result was surprisingly convincing, and posited an intriguing, funny, and somewhat disturbing thesis: With a change in perspective, beloved fictional characters can instantly switch from kind to creepy.
The team behind "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" — a real movie in the Year of Our Lord, 2023 — embraced this spirit to imagine the universally adored Pooh Bear of literature and film as a serial killer. The film's violent conclusion leaves its story open-ended, and its filmmakers are just getting started building a children's-character-turned-slasher cinematic universe straight out of a fever dream.
And thus, I find myself for the third time this...
