When Eddie Murphy debuted on SNL in 1980, he instantly became the show’s biggest star — in large part because of the characters he created. And it definitely was characters, as in plural, as in many more than just one. In fact, they’ve transcended era, too, as they’ve remained some of the most well-known in SNL history, particularly Gumby, Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson and Murphy’s take on James Brown.

For the most part, Murphy crafted them with the help of the writing duo Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, both of whom would later play a big part in Murphy’s film career, writing Coming to America, Nutty Professor and several other of his movies.

Who hasn’t wanted to turn into a snarling, free-wheeling beast when the pressures of domestic life — hell, of life in general — get too much? Women have transformed into beasts throughout mythological history, but that wasn’t always a matter of choice. In Rachel Yoder’s bestselling 2021 novel, “Nightbitch,” that line is a bit fuzzier. Does our heroine become a dog because she wants to or because she has to?

That’s just one of the questions at the heart of filmmaker Marielle Heller’s latest film, which adapts Yoder’s story to the big screen. Like her breakout hit “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” her fact-based grifter tale “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” and her deep-feeling Mr. Rogers-centric feature “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Heller’s latest explores the different facets of being a very real person in a very tough world. Sometimes that includes turning into a dog.

When you have a title with the blunt-force impact of Nightbitch and a premise as seemingly outrageous as a woman who responds to the isolation, alienation and self-sacrifice of motherhood by turning canine, you don’t want a movie that holds back. But Marielle Heller’s adaptation of the 2021 Rachel Yoder novel, while it starts out promisingly with sharp humor and tantalizing jabs of incipient weirdness, doesn’t take its ideas far enough to be seriously provocative. That’s too bad for Amy Adams, who runs with everything the story throws at her but gets shortchanged by the script.

The Academy Award–winning actor, Tony Award–winning producer, writer, and director will receive the 2024 TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media. When Andy Cohen asked Bowen Yang about the worst “Saturday Night Live” host he’d ever worked with, the comedian had an answer ready.

Although he didn’t name names, Yang revealed that the guilty party was a guy — although it seemed even revealing their gender was more than he intended.

“This man who… this person, this host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday before the table read because he hated the ideas,” Yang told Cohen on the Monday’s “Watch What Happens Live” alongside frequent collaborator Matt Rogers.

Yang was hired as a writer in 2018 for Season 44 before being bumped up to on-camera talent for Season 45, so the range of suspects is a long one. However, Rogers offered a small hint, adding, “He’s got new PR and everything.”

The Toronto Film Festival has found a replacement lead sponsor for its 49th edition in September.

On Wednesday, Canadian phone giant Rogers was announced as the presenting sponsor of the 2024 edition and the concluding People’s Choice Awards.

Terms of the sponsorship deal were not disclosed, but Rogers replaces rival phone giant Bell, lead sponsor of TIFF since 1995 and which ended its $5 million per-year support for the Canadian festival after the 2023 edition. The loss of the Bell financial support prompted cost-cutting measures at the film festival, including job cuts.

Rogers steps in at TIFF as it attempts a comeback after two years of coronavirus pandemic disruption with slimmed-down digital editions in 2020 and 2021 and another tough year in 2023 with the impact of the ongoing Hollywood actors and writers strikes.

Films and shows that will be coming to the platform include “Taxi,” “Hamlet,” “Queen of the North,” “Mean Guns,” “Two Rode Together,” “The Fog” and “Silent Hours,” among others.
