When Eddie Murphy debuted on SNL in 1980, he instantly became the show’s biggest star — in large part because of the characters he created. And it definitely was characters, as in plural, as in many more than just one. In fact, they’ve transcended era, too, as they’ve remained some of the most well-known in SNL history, particularly Gumby, Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson and Murphy’s take on James Brown.
For the most part, Murphy crafted them with the help of the writing duo Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, both of whom would later play a big part in Murphy’s film career, writing Coming to America, Nutty Professor and several other of his movies.
I recently caught up with Blaustein about his time writing with Murphy on SNL, who, during our call, shared the financial advice James Brown gave Murphy, why Gumby’s creator loved Murphy’s twist...

A recent decree could lead to more court time for three embattled Big Tech firms. In the U.S. District Court in Oakland, California, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that a group of lawsuits filed by school districts against TikTok, Google, and Meta can move forward.
According to Bloomberg, Rogers backed more than 150 cases filed by school districts, all of which concern the effect social media algorithms may have on the youth mental health crisis. For years, scholastic authorities have argued that tech platforms are liable for the harmful content their recommendation algorithms serve to teenage viewers.
The standard defense against those allegations invokes Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. That’s the title of a legal doctrine that provides “safe harbor” to platforms. As long as they act quickly to deal with violative content, they are exempt from legal liability. A ruling earlier this year supported platforms’ Section 230 rights,...

Chris Harrison left Bachelor Nation years ago after the controversy surrounding Rachael Kirkconnell. However, it seems that people are not finished piling on him, and this happened again in a recent podcast with Matt Rogers and Rachel Bloom.
Here is what Matt and Rachel had to say about the former Bachelor host.
The Bachelor: Matt Rogers Calls Chris Harrison A ‘Jerk’
Matt Rogers met Chris Harrison in 2017 when he appeared on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. Harrison was hosting the game show at the time, and Matt was on there as a contestant. Matt ended up winning $5,000 on the show, but he left it with a bad impression of Harrison.

Captain America’s Shield (Photo Credit – Hotstar)
For over 80 years, Captain America has been the beacon of justice. But what if I told you this legendary weapon conceals a dark secret—a symbol of wickedness hiding in plain sight? In Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #3, fans were taken aback by a shocking revelation that challenged the very essence of Steve Rogers’ legacy!
Rogers is rarely seen without his shield. It’s not just a weapon; it’s an extension of his identity. Even Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, carries his version of the shield. Yet, recent story arcs have hinted at a deeper, more sinister connection tied to the shield’s origins.

Fans may have forgotten Natalie Dormer’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, perhaps not only because she played a minor part but because her character was not admirable for solid fans of the Steve Rogers-Peggy Carter love team.

Captain America (or Steve Rogers) wasn’t the brightest kid when he was training for the military. The kid had heart and an undeterred courage that made him pass Dr. Abraham Erskine’s test.

Mariah Carey is one of the most successful recording artists in history, but you wouldn’t know it from her Grammy track record. She won two awards in 1991. Then she won three more in 2006 … End of list. Five Grammys isn’t a bad total in and of itself. Some legendary artists have none. But the fact that she has so little to show for her historic run through the 1990s is pretty shocking given her stature at the time. “They scammed me,” Carey said (half-jokingly?) on the “Las Culturistas” podcast with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. “They toy with me.”

On the latest episode of Las Culturistas, Mariah Carey sat down with hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers to explain why she feels the Grammys “scammed” her.
Despite the singer’s record-breaking career spanning four decades and 34 nominations, the singer has only five Grammy wins.
In the interview, Rogers mentioned that the singer “doesn’t have enough of those, by the way.”

One multiyear pandemic, two Hollywood strikes and New York Comic Con is back for its “first true, full event” kicking off Thursday.
And though the early days of Covid-19 are behind us, certain aspects of how live events changed between 2020 and 2024 are apparent in this year’s show — like the inclusion of a free livestream for several of the con’s top panels held at New York’s Javits Center for the four-day event.
While some might see that as giving away free content for a ticketed event, New York Comic Con owner ReedPop views it as a worthwhile business decision to maintain relationships with consumers.
“I think there’s a lot of benefit for us to make our content accessible for fans that aren’t able to come,” ,” event director Kristina Rogers told Variety. “And I’m a true believer in, New York Comic Con brings the best of pop culture to the world,...

Who hasn’t wanted to turn into a snarling, free-wheeling beast when the pressures of domestic life — hell, of life in general — get too much? Women have transformed into beasts throughout mythological history, but that wasn’t always a matter of choice. In Rachel Yoder’s bestselling 2021 novel, “Nightbitch,” that line is a bit fuzzier. Does our heroine become a dog because she wants to or because she has to?
That’s just one of the questions at the heart of filmmaker Marielle Heller’s latest film, which adapts Yoder’s story to the big screen. Like her breakout hit “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” her fact-based grifter tale “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” and her deep-feeling Mr. Rogers-centric feature “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Heller’s latest explores the different facets of being a very real person in a very tough world. Sometimes that includes turning into a dog.

When you have a title with the blunt-force impact of Nightbitch and a premise as seemingly outrageous as a woman who responds to the isolation, alienation and self-sacrifice of motherhood by turning canine, you don’t want a movie that holds back. But Marielle Heller’s adaptation of the 2021 Rachel Yoder novel, while it starts out promisingly with sharp humor and tantalizing jabs of incipient weirdness, doesn’t take its ideas far enough to be seriously provocative. That’s too bad for Amy Adams, who runs with everything the story throws at her but gets shortchanged by the script.

The idea of Captain America was born of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, who first appeared in Captain America Comics #1, published by Timely Comics. The character is one of the most popular superheroes created and has managed to capture a big fanbase.
Steve Rogers, who takes on the mantle of Captain America, was once a frail, asthmatic boy who wanted to do his part in helping the Allies win against the Nazis. He takes on a super-soldier serum that changes his physiology and turns himself to his peak physical form.

In the comics, the character is a lot more grittier. Over the years, many instances have shown us how different he is from MCU’s Captain America, who is toned down a lot. He is superhuman, with a vibranium shield, and fights off humans and aliens alike, whoever threatens Earth.

On the night of October 26, 1970, two events happened that changed the lives of many people living in Atlanta, Georgia. Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist is the story of that one night and the aftermath, which had a huge impact on the socio-political environment of the entire United States of America. Yes, the Craig Brewer directorial, Peacock Original, is inspired by true events, though some creative liberties have been taken by the showrunners to dramatize the narrative and amp up the entertainment quotient. Most of the characters, like that of Frank Moten, Chicken Man, Detective J.D. Hudson, Cadillac, Emerson, etc., are all based on real-life people.

Shanks is one of the legendary Yonko in the One Piece series based on the manga written by Eiichiro Oda. The red-haired pirate is also one of the strongest characters in the series. Apart from that, his mastery over the three forms of Haki makes him formidable and uncontested in terms of strength.

Although Shanks is one of the strongest characters in the series, his meeting with The Five Elders raises questions about his motives. It also led to several fans speculating him to be a villain in the series. However, a fan theory speculates that Shanks is a protector and guardian of One Piece and might not be a villain.

When Andy Cohen asked Bowen Yang about the worst “Saturday Night Live” host he’d ever worked with, the comedian had an answer ready.
Although he didn’t name names, Yang revealed that the guilty party was a guy — although it seemed even revealing their gender was more than he intended.
“This man who… this person, this host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday before the table read because he hated the ideas,” Yang told Cohen on the Monday’s “Watch What Happens Live” alongside frequent collaborator Matt Rogers.
Yang was hired as a writer in 2018 for Season 44 before being bumped up to on-camera talent for Season 45, so the range of suspects is a long one. However, Rogers offered a small hint, adding, “He’s got new PR and everything.”
Yang recently received his fourth Emmy nomination for his work on the NBC sketch show, and his third as outstanding supporting actor.

After more than five years on Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang has some stories.
The Emmy Award nominee recounted some of the worst behavior he’s seen from a celebrity host on the NBC sketch comedy show “without naming names” as he recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live.

The Toronto Film Festival has found a replacement lead sponsor for its 49th edition in September.
On Wednesday, Canadian phone giant Rogers was announced as the presenting sponsor of the 2024 edition and the concluding People’s Choice Awards.
Terms of the sponsorship deal were not disclosed, but Rogers replaces rival phone giant Bell, lead sponsor of TIFF since 1995 and which ended its $5 million per-year support for the Canadian festival after the 2023 edition. The loss of the Bell financial support prompted cost-cutting measures at the film festival, including job cuts.
Rogers steps in at TIFF as it attempts a comeback after two years of coronavirus pandemic disruption with slimmed-down digital editions in 2020 and 2021 and another tough year in 2023 with the impact of the ongoing Hollywood actors and writers strikes.

General Hospital’s era of bringing back beloved characters continues. Emma Samms is set to return as the one and only Holly Sutton. Variety was the first to report the news. Holly will arrive back in Port Charles in early September. Further details about her return remain under wraps. Holly was last seen in 2023 when she returned to Port Charles for a brief visit. There, she crossed paths with her on-again, off-again love, Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers). Despite their history, this supercouple didn’t get back together. After her Port Charles pit stop, Holly left for Australia to help out her son, Ethan (James Ryan). Rogers has appeared in a handful of Gh episodes this year, so it’s likely we’ll get to see Robert and Holly share the screen again. To make it to the top, you’ve got to overcome the mortification, according to Matt Rogers on the latest edition of the Las Culturistas podcast. “You have to sometimes climb up a huge hill of cringe,” Rogers explained. “And once you can scale that hill — which might be your judgment on yourself, it might be your judgment on what you’re doing, it might be everyone saying what you’re doing is cringe — on the other end, you slide down into happiness and nirvana.”

The power scale of One Piece is measured in two different aspects. One is the strength of the Devil Fruits, and the other is the ability to use different types of Haki. DC’s Catwoman has famously been regarded as one of the worst superhero films of all time. There are several reasons why critics and fans absolutely detest the film; ranging from the lack of substance, comic inaccuracy, and specifically, how much it relied on Halle Berry’s looks to carry the film. It is safe to say that the movie is nearly impossible to watch for anyone ever briefly familiar with Selina Kyle’s character.
