He was a teacher, but at the age of 30, he decided to go to the Koninlijk Conservatorium in Brussels, Belgium, to go study drama. He had some famous teachers, such as Nand Buyl and Leo Dewals. People like Luk De Koninck, Luc Springuel, Tessy Moerenhout, Luk van Mello, Gilda De Bal, Josse De Pauw, Magda De Winter, Chris Cauwenberghs, Tuur De Weert and 'Rene Verreth' were his co-students. He is married to actress Heddie Suls, they have one son Raf Van Assche.
