Despite a terrible natural disaster in San Francisco in 1971, “I’m Charlie Walker” is an interesting story about grit, business, and race conflict. The movie tells the true story of Charlie Walker, a Black truck owner who had to deal with systemic racism while also taking advantage of a chance that came up out of the blue during the huge oil spill under the Golden Gate Bridge.
There is chaos when two oil ships crash into each other and spill 800,000 gallons of crude oil along the beautiful coastline of Northern California. This environmental nightmare could be a lifesaver for Mike Colter’s character, Charlie Walker. Walker feels discriminated against in the trucking business, which is mostly made up of white people. He sees the cleanup operation as his chance to break long-standing racial barriers.
San Francisco is still dealing with deep-seated racial strife and environmental problems as the story takes place.

Sally Wainwright has not given up on Gentleman Jack Season 3. The show’s creator says her team is brainstorming ways to get a third season made following Gentleman Jack‘s cancellation at HBO. According to Wainwright, BBC is still keen to make more episodes (the show was a collaboration between BBC and HBO), but they need another network to help the show stay globally accessible. Gentleman Jack stars Suranne Jones (Vigil) as Anne Lister and Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) as Ann Walker — the first women to ever marry in England. The drama brought the real-life 1800s romance to life with the help of Lister’s extensive diaries, which were meticulously detailed and partially written in code. Season 1 tracked the events leading up to Anne and Ann’s (nicknamed Adne in Season 2) secret wedding, and then Season 2 showed their new married life. The period drama boasts an avid fanbase thanks to...

"Gentleman Jack" is a rare gem. Even in the streaming age, the TV landscape isn't exactly overflowing with lesbian romances, certainly not those based on real-life lesbian trailblazers like Anne Lister. But for two seasons, "Gentleman Jack" achieved greatness, telling the story of the woman that historians often refer to as "The First Modern Lesbian," as she traveled the world, built businesses and fell in love with a young heiress named Ann Walker (a magnetic Sophie Rundle). Their love story is all kinds of messy and the show deftly balances situational hilarity, the sincerity of their love, and the very real dangers of being themselves in...

Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright is not giving up on a third season for the lesbian period drama series following its cancellation last week by HBO.
Wainwright told RadioTimes.com in an interview that HBO’s decision not to move forward with a third season was a surprise, noting however that BBC, the show’s co-producer, “certainly [is] up for” continuing with the show” but would need another streaming partner. The BBC has said that it was “in discussions” with Wainwright about “what’s next”.
“I think if HBO had been up for it, there’d have been no question, Wainwright added. “It’s been a very successful show in all areas for them – it’s had fantastic reviews, it’s had a very respectable audience and on top of that it’s had an impact on the community of gay women. We have the most extraordinary fanbase.”

Sadly, it seems we've seen the last of our favorite chaotic lesbian couple, Anne Lister and Ann Walker. HBO has declined to renew "Gentleman Jack" for season 3, axing the period drama after two eight-episode seasons.
The TV show, for those not familiar, is based on the 19th-century diaries of the real-life Anne Lister (played by the magnificent Suranne Jones), an English landowner and industrialist dubbed "The First Modern Lesbian" by historians. Created and written entirely by Sally Wainwright, "Gentleman Jack" follows Anne as she courts and, in time, secretly marries a young heiress named Ann Walker in-between sinking coal pits, taking a vested...

Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, stars of HBO’s Gentleman Jack, are sharing their thoughts on HBO’s cancellation of Sally Wainright’s period drama after two seasons.
A co-production with BBC, Gentleman Jack starred Jones as Anne Lister and Rundle as Ann Walker. In Season 2 of the series, from Lookout Point, Anne and Ann set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple.
“While it is sad news Gentleman Jack will not be renewed, this show has brought so many together, enabled people to share their stories, brought joy, emotion and creativity, and gave me a real connection to you as its audience,” Jones said in an Instagram post accompanied by an entertaining blooper reel. “Anne Lister now has a statue in the Piece Hall. "We are the only people in the whole world who want us to be together," Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) tells her wife, their hands clasped together. Ironically, there's a pretty sizeable viewership that would disagree (all we want is for them to find happiness together) but for the past eight episodes, they've had every reason to believe that sentiment true.
Since the season 2 premiere, Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) has endured japes from her wife's unwelcoming friends, venom from her own relatives, stares from strangers, anonymous taunting and so much...

Shibden Hall, written by Wainwright, is from the co-producer of War And Peace.
War And Peace co-producer Lookout Point has won its first solo commission for the BBC – a 19th century period drama penned by Sally Wainwright.
BBC1 has partnered with Us premium cable network HBO to order Shibden Hall, a 8 x 60-minute series based on the real-life diaries of West Yorkshire landowner Anne Lister.
It marks one of Lookout Point’s first major drama commissions since former BBC Wales drama boss Faith Penhale joined as joint chief executive.
Penhale’s focus has been to help the BBC Worldwide-backed firm move from being an international financing specialist to an originator of premium drama.
It is currently co-producing BBC1’s Mike Bartlett-penned newspaper drama Press with BBC Studios and Nigel Stafford Clark’s Deep Indigo and Andrew Davies’ adaptation of Les Miserables with BBC Studios and The Weinstein Company.

Case dismissed. A family court commissioner determined Wednesday that Paul Walker's daughter Meadow will live with her biological mother, Rebecca Soteros, and a nanny, effectively putting an end to the legal drama kicked up when Walker's mother petitioned to be her granddaughter's guardian. The two sides had actually reached an agreement barely a week after Cheryl Ann Walker first surprised Meadow and Soteros by filing for guardianship, but L.A. Superior Court Commissioner David Cowan refused to close the case pending an investigation into Meadow's home life. But now perhaps her dad, who was killed in a car crash Nov. 30, can rest more peacefully. Amy...

Paul Walker's mother has requested a dismissal of her petition for guardianship of the late actor's 15-year-old daughter, Meadow Rain. Cheryl Ann Walker, 60, had sought to be named guardian over her son's estate and his daughter but has abandoned that bid, according to dismissal papers obtained by People. Her attorney, Bela Lugosi, previously told reporters that the family, including Meadow's biological mother, Rebecca Soteros, wanted to resolve the matter out of court. A hearing had been scheduled for April 30, but a judge had already dismissed Cheryl Ann's petition for temporary guardianship over Meadow following her son's tragic death in a car crash last November.

The judge who reviewed Paul Walker's mother's petition seeking temporary guardianship of his 15-year-old daughter Meadow didn't see why an immediate change was necessary and denied that part of the motion, according to documents released Wednesday. "Why is temp guardianship needed? What is urgency?" Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner David J. Cowan wrote in a minute order after attorneys made a brief appearance Thursday in the March 18 filing by Cheryl Ann Walker. Cowan also complained that attorneys for Walker, 60, neglected to serve papers to Meadow or her mother, Rebecca Soteros. Additional paperwork was required to explain the need for a change in guardianship,...

Paul Walker can rest in peace now that his affairs have been settled. The late actor's mother, Cheryl Ann Walker, filed paperwork March 20 to become the legal guardian of Paul's daughter, Meadow Walker, and to oversee the estate he left the 15-year-old, valued at $25 million. She alleged that Paul's ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Soteros, has a drinking problem. Public records show Soteros has a DUI conviction from 2003 and another charge pending in Hawaii, though sources have told us they expect the case to go her way. Paul, who tragically died in November 2013, had stipulated in his will, which was originally drawn up 14 years ago, that his mother should become Meadow's guardian. The...

Religion and homosexuality have always had a tough relationship and leave it to Del Shores to address the issue head-on in the film version of his renowned play, Southern Baptist Sissies.
Like the play, which has been staged countless times since Shores wrote it in 2000, the film takes a look at four young boys – all Southern Baptists – and their journeys into adulthood and sexuality, with their parents, God and the Church watching closely over them to stop any missteps. While Sissies is filled with great laughs and musical performances, there’s a heavy dramatic message here, too, that unfortunately still applies in 2014.
TheBacklot checked in with Shores to talk about making the film (including Willam Belli’s joining the cast) as well as getting some scoop on his gone-but-not-forgotten series, Sordid Lives, which, we found out, may not be gone after all!

"Great LezBritian" is a fortnightly stroll through the very best of British lesbo-centric entertainment and culture. Plus there will be some jolly good interviews with the top ladies who are waving the flag for gay UK.
This week the BBC confirmed to us that they will screen Oxford Film & Television’s The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister on BBC Two on May 31, which is indeed super news. (Check out the trailer here.)
After watching the film at its premiere, we were entirely bowled over by it and so went to meet its writer Jane English (who also wrote several episodes of Channel 4’s brilliant Sugar Rush).
Over a pot of tea at King’s Cross Station, she told us that she spent 12 months poring over Anne’s diaries, which she kept sprawled over her kitchen table. This process gave her an unmistakable passion for Anne’s remarkable life...

There are few things we like more than a lesbian in a tight corset swigging a glass of wine, so when we heard that The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister would open the 2010 BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, we sorted out tickets faster than you can say “Kitty Butler you broke my bleedin’ ‘eart.”
Anne Lister was a 19th century Yorkshire landowner, industrialist, traveller and, of course, gay lady who was gallous and guilt-free about her sexuality and passionate about defying the customs and rules of her time.
Her wonderful story lay bound in a four million page journal, gathering dust in an attic in Halifax until they were found by...

Yesterday, BBC 2 released details about their forthcoming drama based on the life of Anne Lister, including the working title, which unfortunately is not Anne Lister: Original Lez. Instead, the BBC has given the project the properly titillating title The Secret Diaries Of Miss Anne Lister.
Maxine Peake will star as Anne Lister, about whom Peake said:
[She] was a extraordinary woman who, up to recently, has only really been documented in lesbian history. Hopefully, with this film and documentary, she will reach a wider audience exposing them to this inspirational and formidable woman. I am honored but petrified to be embarking on the role of such a pioneering lady!
Anne Lister is considered by many to be the first modern lesbian. She was a contemporary of Jane Austen, and while Jane was penning biting social critique that frowned on single women riding in open carriages with men, or, you know, talking about their feelings,...

For many gay and bisexual men of a certain age, the first inkling that they weren’t like other boys came on Saturday mornings from 1974 to 1976, in the form of a television show called The Land of the Lost. The show, about a father and his two children who were stranded in a mysterious land of dinosaurs, also featured vicious, but curiously slow-moving reptilian humanoids called Sleestak. Now the classic kids’ program by Sid and Marty Krofft, the producers of H.R. Pufnstuf and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, has even been made into a feature film starring Will Ferrell, opening this Friday.
But it wasn’t just the gloriously campy-even-at-the-time nature of the show itself that appealed to gay boys. It was also the fact that it featured the role of Will, the Marshall’s handsome teenage son, played by an actor billed only as “Wesley,” but whose full name is Wesley Eure.

This email was sent by AFTRA to members today about the AMPTP talks:
May 19, 2008
Dear AFTRA Member:
As you know, AFTRA has been in negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on our contract covering primetime network dramatic programs—also known as Exhibit A—since May 7. Because a press blackout is in effect for these talks, I felt it was important to contact you directly with you a brief update.
We are confronting a number of challenging issues, and a resolution may not be quick or easy. However, our discussions with the Industry have been professional and businesslike, and we remain focused on continuing negotiations in this vein.
As expected, there are several significant issues in the area of New Media—including, most notably, how AFTRA members will participate in original New Media productions, and under what circumstances employers can exploit excerpts from traditional TV programs in New Media.
