"This isn't your territory. It's their territory." Another international remake of a Hollywood classic! China has already remade the 1997 action-horror film about giant snakes called Anaconda, which was a huge hit when it debuted in the 90s. This new version is similar but follows a group of circus performers stranded in a rainforest. They must figure out how to survive when they discover they're marked as bait for the snakes. This Chinese remake stars Terence Yin, Nita Xia, Paul Che, Jiu Kong, Ken Lok, Wang Xing Chen, Wang Gang, Wang Zi Run, Xu Shao Hang, and Wu Hao. The original movie ended up with a few bad direct-to-video sequels (including Lake Placid vs. Anaconda in 2015) and Hollywood has also been trying to reboot it with screenwriter Evan Daugherty hired to write a new script. Until then, this Chinese version might be just as ridiculously entertaining as the original, which infamously...

Three and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Tom Gormican is on board to write (and possibly direct) the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and we’ve heard that this new take on the concept of Anaconda might be taking a meta approach, with “actors playing loose fictional versions of themselves who go off to make an Anaconda movie and all hell breaks loose.” There was a rumor that Pedro Pascal and Paul Rudd had been offered roles in the film… But while we wait to see how that project is going to pan out, Sony Pictures...

Here's something you probably didn't expect to see today: A trailer for a Chinese remake of the '90s horror B-movie classic "Anaconda." Yes, really. And, to be perfectly honest, you're probably not prepared for just how bonkers this thing looks. Of course the original movie is pretty bonkers on its own, but this is taking things to another level. Before we discuss this further, it's probably best you watch this insanity for yourself. Check it out above.
So yeah ... much to discuss, much to process. First and foremost, the broad beats of the plot appear to be in line with the original film, with some extra stuff thrown in there. Most notably, there appears to be a lot more giant snake action. The original "Anaconda" had an animatronic snake that was very tough to work with, which limited director Luis Llosa a bit. Here? It's just lots of pretty decent CGI craziness.

After spawning three sequels and a spinoff crossover film with the Lake Placid franchise, Anaconda is plotting a return here in America, with a new movie reportedly in development.
Additionally, we’ve now learned, the ’90s classic Anaconda is getting a Chinese remake!
From directors Xiang Qui Liang and Xiang He Sheng, the upcoming Anaconda remake has unleashed a wild official trailer this week, and it’s loaded with giant snake carnage.
In the 1997 movie, a film crew is taken hostage by an insane hunter, who forces them along on his quest to capture the world’s largest – and deadliest – snake. The Chinese remake looks to feature a mostly similar storyline, centered on a massive killer known as Scarlet Naga. It also seems to feature zombies from the Qing Dynasty, which definitely weren’t in the 1990s movie.

"It's not safe here. They'll find us." Sony Pictures has unveiled a new trailer for The Calm Beyond, a Hong Kong sci-fi thriller survival movie that is now out to watch in the US. This premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2020, and has quietly dropped in the US already, even though this is the first time we're posting this trailer. A young woman lives on, hidden in plain sight in a ruined Hong Kong building after a tsunami destroyed the city. A castaway on a concrete island. Her concealed existence is changed forever when a small child literally floats into her life. In an interview: "The idea for a film, The Calm Beyond, came to [director Joshua Wong] during an Mri scan. It's about surviving a storm and 'how you live after.'" Unfortunately the director passed away after finishing and premiering this in 2020. The film stars Kara Wang as Asha,...

According to Wikipedia, A mockumentary (a portmanteau of mock and documentary) or docucomedy is a type of movie or television show depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary. The genre gained recognition (notoriety if you prefer) with “Borat“, although some may remember the 1984 “This is Spinal Tap” or the excellent Belgian “Man Bites Dog“. In Asian cinema, the mockumentary occasionally has a different form, with Shohei Imamura blending documentary with theater and fourth-wall-breaking surrealism in “A Man Vanishes” for example, although recently, a number of productions seem to follow the international “rules” of the subcategory. Without further ado, here are 10 of the most intriguing samples one can find in Asian cinema, in chronological order.

The film starts as a documentary of sorts, regarding the disappearance of plastic salesman Oshima that occurred two years previously.

From the get go, it was obvious that Square Enix truly believes in Sleeping Dogs. However, that fact is even more evident now that we know the Japanese publisher went an extra mile by asking A-list voice actors to step in and give life to its sandbox action game’s cast of characters. It would have been easier if they’d casted relative unknowns, but that didn’t happen. Instead, those who play through the impressive-looking title will hear vocal offerings from the likes of Tom Wilkinson, Emma Stone, Will Yun Lee, Lucy Liu and Jackie Mah.
“Sleeping Dogs features over two hours of rich dialogue in a story inspired by some of Hong Kong’s finest films,” said Stephen van der Mescht, executive producer at United Front Games. “As huge fans of the genre we knew exactly who we wanted; we knew who could bring the script to life.

I am glad to say that this is one of my favourite films this year with its simple, beautifully shot character-driven approach to storytelling.
Twenty-something Wai (Terence Yin) is immediately introduced to the audience, suffering from a great amount of memory loss and trying to find out who he is; a simple plot which helps us to identify with Wai trying to discover himself with the help of his family and friends, building up a strong relationship with the people who he obviously never really had a relationship with previously.

"Dream Home": Beneath the soft, romantic title (1) lurks what might possibly be the craziest, bloodiest slasher film ever made in Hong Kong! Produced, directed and written by the rebellious and prolific Pang Ho-cheung ("You Shoot I Shoot", "Men Suddenly In Black"), who doesn't give a damn that its sexual and violent content guarantees it won't be shown in Mainland China, "Dream Home" had an unparalleled $4 million production budget (amazing, considering the current Hong Kong cinema crisis) and is also the first movie produced and financed by 852 Films, a company co-founded by "Dream Home" lead actress Josie Ho. While involved in her role as a young, hard working woman willing to do anything to have her own apartment, Josie Ho revealed to Action Queens some exclusive information and gruesome anecdotes about her work on the movie, both in front of and behind the camera. The Heavenly Kings
HONG KONG -- The Heavenly Kings meets at the juncture of Andy Kaufman's Inter-Gender Wrestling and This Is Spinal Tap. First-time director and Asian-American actor Daniel Wu gathered a clutch of friends and pulled a fast one on the Hong Kong media. He also produced one of the territory's funniest, most critical films of the year.
Wu has stated that he made The Heavenly Kings for Hong Kong audiences. But the subject matter, boy bands, is going to play well all across Asia, where such manufactured, corporate controlled bands are an integral part of the music industry. To a lesser degree, overseas viewers are going to recognize the 'N Syncs and Backstreet Boys and possibly have their worst fears confirmed about those bands' origins. Word of mouth is already strong in Hong Kong, and could take the film farther than anyone had planned. It's a clever film, and could well be enlightening for viewers outside of Asia where the boy band phenomenon isn't quite as intense.
ALIVE is a Hong Kong boy band, along the lines of F4 from Taiwan or SMAP from Japan, that was created specifically to be the subject of The Heavenly Kings. Self-produced, shot with a skeleton crew and a tiny budget, Wu, Conroy Chan, Andrew Lin and Terence Yin -- all actors -- pull the wool over the collective eyes of the Hong Kong press long enough to shoot 300 hours of footage detailing the rise and fall of the group they decided to form. Working from a synopsis less than a completed script, Wu wrote scenes that would work for the film to fit the best of the footage.
The music industry in Hong Kong gets sufficiently skewered, but Wu keeps his slings and arrows humorous rather than simply mean-spirited. Cut in among ALIVE's antics are talking heads interviews with some of the industry's biggest stars (Jacky Cheung, Miriam Yeung, Karen Mok, Nicholas Tse) that give the film a level of credibility that's usually unseen in faux docs like it.
The interviewees speak honestly about the industry and how to play it, making ALIVE's behavior and actions all the more hilarious (trying out a stage 'look' and learning to dance are fantastically funny). Woven into the local industry comedy are comments on the changing role of the big label distributor, the relationship between the consumer and artist, between artist and sponsor, and the schizophrenic way Hong Kong treats its own stars. These bits add a level of seriousness that occasionally slows the picture down, but not enough to count as a serious flaw.
The Heavenly Kings uses its DV roots to its advantage and the 35mm transfer is one of the cleanest seen in recent memory. Any audio or visual glitches -- and there aren't that many -- can be chalked up to style: It's as difficult to differentiate the rough documentary video from blips as it is to separate fact from fiction. The film's music is great as it's supplied by some of Hong Kong's most prominent independents. This is a strong, assured debut and just the jolt the Hong Kong industry needs right now.
