Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Arthur Conti went from zero to sixty in record time. The English actor turned the equivalent of a high school musical into representation, which led to a two-line day on House of the Dragon and an acclaimed performance at London’s Park Theatre. Toward the end of his run on stage in Winner’s Curse, he put himself on tape for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton and Michael Keaton’s 1988 genre mashup, Beetlejuice. Unexpectedly, Conti soon found himself in the middle of a Zoom callback with Burton and the town’s newly anointed superstar, Jenna Ortega.
Within two hours, Conti officially landed the role of Jeremy Frazier, who Ortega’s character, Astrid Deetz, would eventually refer to as her “date from hell.” Astrid — having been estranged from her mother, Lydia (Winona Ryder), since the divorce and death of her father Richard (Santiago Cabrera...

This article contains massive spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."
1988's "Beetlejuice" is a singular work of cinema, a gonzo alt-comedy supernatural satire that takes a look at death, the afterlife, and the ghost movie in a way that's completely unique unto itself. It's one of those films that contains a ton of imagination and some unique world-building, so it's no surprise that there's been a desire to explore that world further during the 36 years since the movie's release. Yet, despite a successful children's animated series and a hit Broadway musical, "Beetlejuice" is not a franchise that's been bled dry.
Thus, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," the long-awaited follow-up from original director Tim Burton, is much more of a personal sequel as opposed to a franchise-building installment or even a too-reverential legacy sequel. This is not a film intended to reboot an IP so much as it's an artist revisiting his old stomping grounds. Burton himself has said as much,...

Tim Burton’s belated sequel to 1988’s weird, wild, and hilariously macabre Beetlejuice abounds in morbid, nauseating delights. The afterlife that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice envisions is a blacklight expressionist trip, perhaps not as grungy and edgy as it was in the original film, but it’s a confident, playful, and frequently slimy vision from the man who defined those things for multiple generations. And the way this film sees it, there’s nothing waiting in the hereafter as frightening, traumatizing, or horrific as what life itself can do to people.
Despite the fact that Beetlejuice’s (Michael Keaton) grotesque rotting mug is all over the promotion for the film, Burton and screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have remembered just how sparingly he was used in the original film. Beetlejuice is a wild agent of chaos utilized to destroy and devour scenes, not anchor them. Keaton is gloriously unhinged in those signature stripes,...

Tim Burton was already a graduate of the Disney hard-knocks school of animation, a filmmaker with a few shorts under his belt, and the man who helped Pee-wee Herman go from underground favorite to alpha-manchild of ’80s cinema, when he begun working on his sophomore film: a 1988 horror-comedy about a Goth, some ghosts, and a particularly uncouth ghoul. Beetlejuice gave us our first introduction to the full, uncut Burton sensibility, in which the macabre and the madcap walked hand in hand while Michael Keaton ricocheted off the walls. It was spooky,...

There’s a great scene in 1993’s classic time-loop comedy Groundhog Day, where Bill Murray’s character experiences a near-perfect day with Andie MacDowell’s Rita, but messes up right at the end, missing his chance to kiss her. On his next loop, he tries to recreate their perfect day for a second chance and fails miserably because all his efforts feel forced and desperate. That’s pretty much what it feels like to watch Tim Burton’s long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, which tries extremely hard to remind you why you loved the original 1988 movie, but ends up feeling like an incoherent mess, frantically shouting, “Remember this bit? What about this bit?”
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice joins the characters 36 years after the events of the first movie.

There’s an inventive sequence early in the unexpectedly delightful Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in which the Bee Gees’ “Tragedy” accompanies Monica Bellucci’s soul-sucking demoness as her hacked up body parts are shaken loose from crates in the afterlife’s lost-and-found warehouse, where she proceeds to stitch herself back together like a gorgeous DIY Frankenstein monster. That scene multitasks as a show of kinship with the same actor’s role as a vampire bride in Bram Stoker’s Dracula; a tribute from Tim Burton to a key Gothic literature inspiration; and a darkly delicious valentine to the director’s offscreen partner of the past two years.
One of many inspired set-pieces in a clever sequel laced with hilarious callbacks to the 1988 original and amusingly eclectic pop-culture references to everything from Carrie to Mario Bava, from Soul Train to Donna Summer, it’s not the only time during the movie that I scrawled,...

We Finally Know What George Miller’s Martian Manhunter Would’ve Looked Like in Justice League Mortal
Finally, the Martian Manhunter has revealed himself. A founding member of DC‘s Justice League of America, the shape-shifting Martian J’onn J’onzz was slated to appear in one of the most infamous canceled movie projects, the Justice League film almost directed by Mad Max creator George Miller.
Miller’s Justice League: Mortal would have featured the “Big Seven” most associated with the Justice League, including the Martian Manhunter. And to play the Manhunter, Miller turned to one of his favorite collaborators, Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played Toecutter in the first Mad Max film and would later go on to play Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Thanks to new behind-the-scenes photos posted by prosthetics artist Antony McMullen, we can finally see what the big screen version of Martian Manhunter would have looked like, as envisioned by Miller and his team. And he looks… pretty much like Martian Manhunter.

One actor who came close to comic book movie stardom is Santiago Cabrera. In a recent Hollywood Reporter interview, he opened up about almost playing Aquaman back in 2007. Cabrera – best known from TV’s Heroes – said he officially got the part when George Miller was going to direct Justice League: Mortal.
Miller, the genius behind Mad Max, had cast Cabrera as Aquaman and the movie was gearing up to shoot down in Australia. Cabrera flew all the way there just to meet Miller and try on his Aquaman costume. “It felt so real in that moment,” he reflected. But things change fast in Hollywood. Right as filming was about to start, the writer’s strike hit and stopped the whole project in its tracks.

Many potentially great superhero movies have failed to materialise over the years, though George Miller's Justice League: Mortal remains among the most intriguing.
Only bits and pieces have ever been revealed about the project (an early version of the screenplay is floating around online if you search hard enough), including the fact the Mad Max director considered shooting it completely in motion capture, similar to Beowulf.
Unfortunately, Justice League: Mortal ended up being a victim of the 2007/2008 writer's strike, though it got far enough along to assemble an impressive cast of young actors. The idea was for them to grow into their roles over a series of movies that would have launched a shared DC Universe around the same time the MCU was created.
Adam Brody was cast as Barry Allen/The Flash, with D.J. Cotrona as Superman, rapper Common as John Stewart/Green Lantern, Australian supermodel Megan Gale as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman,...

In Land of Women, Chilean actor Santiago Cabrera stars as Amat, a Spanish resident in the fictional Catalonian town of La Muga and the sole male participant in the all-female wine cooperative on which the city’s economy relies. He also becomes an unexpected and much-needed aide to Eva Longoria’s Gala Scott, who, along with her mother (Carmen Maura) and daughter (Victoria Bazùa), crash into his world while on the run from mobsters trying to retrieve the multi-million-dollar debt owed to them by her husband Fred Scott (James Purefoy).
The “Under the Tuscan Sun–Eat, Pray, Love-y” tone of the Spanish-language Apple TV+ series — as Longoria previously described it to The Hollywood Reporter — appears to foreshadow a future as a romantic lead for Cabrera whose career has spanned the genres of superhero drama (Heroes), dark comedy (Big Little Lies), crime thriller (Dexter) and science fiction, portraying Cristobal Rios in Star Trek: Picard,...

The characters on Land of Women are, generally speaking, not having a great time. Gala (Eva Longoria) is a posh New Yorker who’s just discovered that her feckless husband (James Purefoy’s Fred) is $15 million in the hole to loan sharks. Fearing for her life, she flees to rural Spain with her teenage daughter, Kate (Victoria Bazúa), and mother, Julia (Carmen Maura). Neither of them are thrilled to have their lives upended at a moment’s notice, and once there, they’re only temporarily out of danger anyway.
But if the events of the Apple TV+ series are stressful for its characters, they’re downright relaxing for us as viewers. Once the family has arrived in La Muga, the crime-thriller plot machinations take a back seat to a sun-dappled fantasy of small-town life, cut with tart humor and some minor soap operatics. This week, AppleTV+ brings us Land of Women, starring Eva Longoria as Gala, a woman who has to flee her luxurious Manhattan life when a couple of hired goons crash the opening of her brand-new wine shop to say her husband Fred (James Purefoy) owes their boss $15 million. Gala gathers her mother Julia (Carmen Maura) and teen daughter Kate (Victoria Bazua) and sets off for La Muga, Julia’s hometown in Catalonia, to hide from Fred’s shady creditor and plot her next move.

Exclusive: It came down to the wire but the last outstanding scripted series on the Big 4 broadcast networks has learned its fate. Fox has handed a Season 4 renewal to The Cleaning Lady, starring Élodie Yung. According to sources, the order is for 12 episodes.
While expected, the renewal was not straight-forward and comes with a showrunner change, Deadline has learned. The crime drama, a co-production between Warner Bros. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Cleaning Lady Season 3 Episode 8, “Know Thy Enemy.”] Thony will avenge Arman if it’s the last thing she does in The Cleaning Lady. Series star Élodie Yung tells TV Insider that following Arman’s (the late Adan Canto) death in Episode 6, Thony has become a woman obsessed with “revenge,” and it will continue to affect her relationships with everyone in the show. “She wants to take Ramona down,” Yung says of Arman’s aunt, played by Kate del Castillo. This vitriol is the result of Thony’s theory that Ramona is somehow tied to Arman’s kidnapping. Ramona, a cartel boss, was hellbent on getting her nephew back throughout the first half of the season, but Thony suspected an insidious truth lying beneath Ramona’s familial facade. In Season 3 Episode 8, which aired on Tuesday, April 30 on Fox, Thony’s suspicions seemed to be confirmed when she found Ramona and...

The cast and crew of The Cleaning Lady are still grieving the loss of star Adan Canto. One of the most polarizing series of the last 20 years is staging a comeback.
Deadline reports that Heroes creator Tim Kring is prepping a follow-up to the 2006-10 series.
