Was the former lead conductor of The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
He was awarded the 2006 American National Medal of the Arts by the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington D.C. for his services to music.
He made his professional debut with the Santa Fe Opera in 1957.
He attended Dartmouth, Harvard and Brown universities.
He joined the Cincinnati Symphony in 1965 as associate conductor.
