Back in June 2024, we learned that Fall stars Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey would be starring in an upcoming remake of the natural horror film The Breed. Well, guess who just joined the cast? Scream star Hayden Panettiere! She, along with several others, will be starring alongside Gardner and Currey in the new horror film.
Wait! We need to clear some things up about this movie first. It's not actually a remake. It was initially believed to be one, but instead, it's a sequel to The Breed. It's also been given an official title, A Breed Apart.
While it's still unclear who is writing the script for the film, filmmaking brothers Nathan and Griff Furst (Nightmare Shark) will be directing and producing via their Curmudgeon Films production company. In addition, Daro Film Distribution is signed on to co-produce and will be financing the movie as well.

Back in 2006, the late, great Wes Craven produced a killer dog movie called The Breed (watch it Here), which was directed by Nicholas Mastandrea from a screenplay by Robert Conte and Peter Martin Wortmann and starred Michelle Rodriguez, Oliver Hudson, Taryn Manning, Eric Lively, Hill Harper, Nick Boraine, and Lisa-Marie Schneider. Now a remake of The Breed is in the works, going by the title A Breed Apart, and Deadline reports that Hayden Panettiere, who worked with Craven on Scream 4, has joined the cast!
Brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are directing A Breed Apart, and are also producing it hrough their Curmudgeon Films shingle. The Fursts are no strangers to killer animal movies, as Griff’s previous directing credits include Trailer Park Shark, Ghost Shark, Swamp Shark, Lake Placid 3, Alligator Alley, and Arachnoquake. Exclusive: Hayden Panettiere will star in A Breed Apart. Known for playing Claire Bennet in Heroes, Kirby Reed in slasher franchise Scream and Juliette Barnes in Nashville, Panettiere will take an as yet unspecified role in the film, which uses Wes Craven’s cult 2006 picture The Breed as a jump-off point.
In addition to Panettiere signing on, Deadline can also reveal the film has rounded out its ensemble cast.
Joey Bragg, Troy Gentile, Riele Downs and Page Kennedy will all appear. They join the previously announced Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey, who were seen together in vertigo-inducing Netflix movie Fall.
Billed as a reimagining of Wes Craven-produced and Nicholas Mastandrea-directed The Breed, the upcoming movie is more accurately a sequel of sorts and is set after events of the first film. The new picture originally bore the same name, but the title has now been tweaked.

While remakes can be hit-or-miss, we hope that the upcoming remake of the natural horror film The Breed does the original 2006 movie justice. We first learned of this film back in May 2024, and more information has come out since then.
The Breed is set to be directed and produced by filmmaking brothers Nathan and Griff Furst. They previously helmed the horror action film Nightmare Shark. They will produce this horror flick through their film production company, Curmudgeon Films, which will also be handling sales across the Americas. Additionally, the movie will be co-produced and financed by Daro Film Distribution, which also represents the international rights to the film. It's unknown who will be writing the script, though.

With a sequel to the fear-of-heights thriller Fall on the way, Variety reports this week that the two stars of the 2022 movie will reunite for the upcoming remake of The Breed, a new take on the killer dog horror movie that was produced by Wes Craven back in 2006.
Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey will star alongside Page Kennedy (The Meg) in the remake that’s being directed by filmmaking brothers Sean and Bryan Furst.
The remake is described as “an unconventional reimagining of the Wes Craven cult classic,” though again the original movie wasn’t directed by Craven and isn’t quite a cult classic.
In any event, Curmudgeon Films will be producing The Breed. In the fresh take on the 2006 horror movie, “Violet [Grace Caroline Currey] is a rebel icon and badass on a mission to search for abandoned dogs on a remote island which leads to complete adrenaline-fueled terror.”

Director Scott Mann’s thriller Fall, which stars Grace Caroline Currey (Shazam!: Fury of the Gods) and Virginia Gardner (Halloween 2018) as a pair of characters who get stuck at the top of a 2000 foot tall radio tower, was given a theatrical release, but it wasn’t really a break-out hit. It made $21 million worldwide, on a budget of $3 million. More viewers watched it on Amazon, purchased it on Blu-ray or DVD (order it Here), or caught it on Starz or Netflix… and Fall was so successful on Netflix, it was enough to get back-to-back sequels greenlit by Capstone Studios! Mann will be writing and directing Fall 3 himself, but he has decided to hand the helm of the middle installment of this trilogy over another director. Or, as it turns out, other directors. Late A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Last House on the Left and Scream director Wes Craven was responsible for some of the most iconic movies, characters and moments in horror cinema, but he was also behind his share of duds, and one of 'em is getting a remake.
Craven didn't actually direct 2006's The Breed, but he was a producer on the film, and recruited his A New Nightmare assistant director Nick Mastandrea to helm.
The movie focuses on two brothers and their friends who travel to an island cabin they inherited from their recently deceased uncle for a relaxing weekend getaway. The group is then besieged by genetically enhanced dogs bred to kill via an abandoned training facility on the Island.
The Breed was not well-received (to say the least), earning a 27% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, Variety reports that brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are set to direct a remake,...

Good news for those who enjoyed the campy/thrilling delights of survival thriller :a[Fall]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/fall/' } — and potentially terrible news for anyone who fears getting vertigo in a cinema or on their sofa. Following on from :a[word back in March]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/fall-sequel-in-the-works-after-success-on-netflix/' } that a sequel was in development to Scott Mann's high-altitude film comes the news that production company Capstone Studios is green lighting not one but two movies.
Fall which debuted last year, saw :a[Shazam!]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/shazam-review/' }'s Grace Caroline Currey and :a[Halloween]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/halloween-2018-review/' }'s Virginia Gardner as friends who ill-advisedly scale and get stuck up a 2,000-foot radio tower in the desert.

Get ready to fall even harder! Last year's surprise hit thriller "Fall" is getting not one, but two sequels. Capstone Studios, the company behind the project, feels strongly that they have a franchise on their hands and have now officially turned this into a trilogy. The first sequel is due to begin filming next summer, with much of the original creative team returning.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Scott Mann will return to produce both movies, and he will co-write and direct "Fall 3." There is no word yet on who is going to wind up in the director's chair for "Fall 2," or why Mann won't be directing all three films. Capstone may intend to do them back-to-back, which would make it more challenging for the same filmmaker to direct both installments. The first film was originally R-rated, but landed a PG-13 rating after some F-bombs were removed from the edit.

Fear reached new heights in Lionsgate’s Fall last year, a heart-pounding tale of survival from the producers of 47 Meters Down that was released in August 2022. We learned earlier this year that a sequel was on the way, but now it seems that Two sequels are in the works.

While doing the press rounds for Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, Fall star Grace Caroline Currey said she thought it would be “really cool” if she got the chance to come back for the sequel. Now it sounds like Currey is going to have a couple opportunities to return to the world of Fall, as The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Capstone Studios has green lit not just one but two sequels!
Mann will be producing both sequels and also intends to co-write and direct the third film of the trilogy. There’s no word on who’s writing or directing Fall 2, which is scheduled to...

Earlier this year, we heard that Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) would be starring in The Leader, a true crime biopic about a story that shocked the world back in 1997, the mass suicide of the members of the Heaven’s Gate cult. Now Deadline reports that Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Grace Caroline Currey (Shazam! Fury of the Gods) have joined the cast, which also includes Simon Rex (Red Rocket).
Farmiga will be playing cult leader Bonnie Nettles, a.k.a. Ti. Nelson’s character is the cult’s infamous frontman, Marshall Applewhite, a.k.a. Do. According to Deadline, “Hall will play a key devotee: a wealthy addict who attempts to win favor with Applewhite by financially supporting the cult with his trust fund. Currey will play an Oregon-based boutique owner who drops out of society in the late 1970s to join the cult – leaving her family and fiancé behind.

A few weeks ago, we heard that director Scott Mann and the producers at Tea Shop Productions are developing a sequel to the survival thriller Fall (watch it Here) now that the film has become an international success on the Netflix streaming service. Fall star Grace Caroline Currey is currently doing the press rounds because she plays a role in Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter she indicated that she would be interested in coming back for the Fall sequel.
Scripted by Scott Mann and Jonathan Frank, Fall had the following synopsis: For best friends Becky and Hunter, life is all about conquering fears and pushing limits. But after they climb 2,000 feet to the top of a remote, abandoned radio tower, they find themselves stranded with no way down. Now Becky and Hunter’s expert climbing skills will be put to the...

[This story contains spoilers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Fall.]
Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Grace Caroline Currey quite literally put her blood, sweat and tears into Mary Bromfield and her superpowered counterpart.
Currey originally played young Mary in David F. Sandberg’s 2019 film, Shazam!, but ceded Super Hero Mary duties to Michelle Borth. However, with Mary now a full-fledged adult in the sequel, Sandberg promoted his frequent collaborator to the Shazamily, making her the only family member to play dual roles.
According to Currey, this scenario nearly played out in the 2019 film since Mary was right on the verge of adulthood.
“When they first cast me, they were toying around on whether or not to have the same actor for Mary, considering she’s the oldest of the kids,” Currey tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But now, with the second one, it was really neat to have that explanation that she’s an adult now.”

It seems like only yesterday that Lucy Liu was landing on a Philadelphia baseball field on dragon-back to cause chaos, yet tomorrow "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is already set to land on digital platforms. Warner Bros. has confirmed to /Film that, as ComicBook.com first reported, the "Shazam" sequel film is already set to drop via digital release on April 7, 2023.
This is an exceptionally quick turnaround time for a film that hit theaters just under three weeks ago, but then again, superhero film fans don't exactly seem to be willing to head to theaters to support the Zachary Levi-led movie. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" saw a precipitous 67.8% drop between its first and second week of release, after underperforming during its opening weekend as well. Warner Bros' decision to quickly opt in to an at-home viewing option seems like a smart one, as DC fans who no longer consider...

Adam Brody has talked at length about the one that got away, and with a Flash-led movie on the verge of release, one can only wonder how things would’ve ended up had Brody’s Barry Allen made it to the big screen in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal. The epic superhero tale fell apart in early 2007 due to the impending writers’ strike and the loss of an Australian tax credit, and it continues to be one of Hollywood’s ultimate “what if?” stories.
So, when David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! made its way to the big screen in 2019, one of the most rewarding aspects of the film was Brody’s surprise cameo as the super-powered alter ego of Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman. It was not only perfect casting by virtue of the two actors’ similar wit, but it also allowed for a Justice League: Mortal reunion between Brody and D.J. Cotrona,...

Go See It!
Most sequels have a tough enough job just living up to their first movie, and this one would have had a big enough job just being a sequel to the original Shazam! What director David F. Sandberg’s first movie had was the novelty of the story of a boy having the power to just speak a magic word and finding himself in his now adult “ultimate form”, plus the power of being nearly Superman’s equal (some would argue even more), a fun novelty super hero movie. The story also had the subplot of young Billy Batson’s quest to find his mother after having been in foster homes his whole life, only to realize that the foster home he is in has provided him with the family he really needed by the end of the movie. In the end, he creates the Shazam family,...

Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is back with the rest of his super-powered foster family for another adventure. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now playing in theaters, but it hasn’t gotten off to the strongest start. The sequel earned just $3.4 million in Thursday night previews, much less than its predecessor’s $5.9 million. The film is projected to gross anywhere between $35-40 million domestically in its opening weekend
“Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos,” reads the official synopsis. “But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.” Shazam! In news that's terrible for people with a fear of heights but fantastic for those with a penchant for schadenfreude thrills, Scott Mann's gripping survival horror film, "Fall," is getting a sequel. /Film's own Chris Evangelista described the film as a "surprisingly effective nail-biter" in his review and the relatively low-budget tale of two adrenaline seekers getting trapped on top of a decommissioned tower 2,000 feet in the air was a modest hit at the box office. However, a recent report from Deadline notes that the sequel news is not a result of the box office performance, but instead, due to the film's massive popularity on Netflix internationally.
The publication states that director Scott Mann and British producer Tea Shop Productions are currently brainstorming an idea for a follow-up feature, once again centered on the terrifying idea of being stuck somewhere way, way up high. "Fall" was initially supposed to...

More viewers watched it on Amazon, purchased it on Blu-ray or DVD (order it Here), or caught it on Starz or Netflix… and now Deadline has revealed that Fall was so successful on Netflix, a sequel is now in the works! The movie landed in Netflix’s top 10 rankings in 4 different territories, and has been the second-most watched movie in the UK for the last two weeks.

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods has started off its domestic box office run with $3.4 million in Thursday evening previews.
Prerelease tracking suggests the superhero sequel will open to $35 million this weekend, one of the lower starts for a Hollywood superhero pic. As the loud but lithe Shazam!: Fury of the Gods commences, our hero is suffering from a bit of imposter syndrome. Poor Shazam. Its production and release hampered by Covid and now seemingly lame-ducked by the arrival of a new regime to run DC Studios, the big red-suited lug’s second movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, finally makes its lonely stand in an effort to tap into the good will generated by his 2019 big-screen debut and, perhaps, plead its case to keep this off-brand DC franchise going.
We say off-brand because when the first Shazam! came out, it was a fun, funny, family-oriented, brightly-colored antidote to the ponderous, dark, heavy-handed edgelord theatrics of the Snyderverse that dominated DC for nearly a decade. It had heart, its stakes were relatively small, and its hero was much more relatably human than the brooding bro-dudes and psychotics we had gotten used to from the Dceu.

Plot: After the events in the previous film, it appears Shazam has made a bit of a blunder. It’s a big enough of one to bring the Daughters of Atlas to unleash a little Hell on Earth.
Review: One of the joys of David F. Sandberg’s Shazam was the filmmaker’s mix of humor with a touch of horror. The comedic superhero excelled with the laughs. As well as a few moments fitting of the director’s previous films, Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. And now, he is back with Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Zachary Levi is once again leading the charge. As is the rest of this charming cast. Review: One of the joys of David F. Sandberg’s Shazam was the filmmaker’s mix of humor with a touch of horror. The comedic superhero excelled with the laughs. About halfway through David F. Sandberg’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” our hero’s hometown of Philadelphia gets sealed into a giant, magical bubble. What better metaphor for this series’ place in the DC Universe, a sprawling franchise that never quite cohered and is now getting a major retooling at the hands of new brass, do you need?
When Sandberg’s first “Shazam!” film arrived in theaters in March 2019, it was on the heels of massive box office successes like “Aquaman,” “Justice League,” and “Wonder Woman” — the salad days of what was then known as the DC Extended Universe — and a seemingly clever time to release the closest the Dceu had gotten to a standalone film for the younger set. It was cute, funny, sweet, and very much its own thing. It existed in its own bubble, yes, but that wasn’t a bug, it was a feature.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes four years after its predecessor, introducing new forces that threaten Billy Batson and his superpowered family. The DC Extended Universe is once again changing direction under new leadership, but the fandom still has the opportunity to explore this continuation. The sequel doesn’t improve on the original, although it finds the beats that comic fans are looking for.

The Shazamily is back, and on a much larger scale, but at its heart this superhero saga is still about family, and that’s the good thing here.
In 2019’s origin story (which goes way back to 1940 comics when the then-named Captain Marvel was introduced), a group of teens in a foster home, often bullied in school and going through life alone, bonded as a family and as their older superhero alter egos. That movie, from Swedish director David F. Sandberg, was a nice hit for the DC brand at Warners and even won over critics. So naturally we could expect a sequel, even as this comic book brand is undergoing major changes. Employing the same mix of humor and heart, but really amping up the super-heroics as it were, this second edition bodes well for its future in the uncertain DC Universe, at least in terms of delivering on what finicky fans expect.
