When it opened in 1995 in Times Square, the All Star Café was supposed to be the sports world’s answer to Planet Hollywood. Not only was it developed by the same restaurant chain, but it borrowed from its playbook, attracting legends such as Joe Montana, Shaquille O’Neal, Ken Griffey Jr. and Andre Agassi to serve as ambassadors to the brand. But what began as a red carpet extravaganza slowly deteriorated, a victim of changing tastes and rocky finances.

Now, Sports Illustrated Studios and 101 Studios, the company behind “Yellowstone,” are partnering with Stephen Curry, the nine-time NBA All-Star, four-time NBA champion and two-time NBA Mvp — and his Unanimous Media multimedia company — to produce a feature film and documentary about the All Star Café’s rise and fall. Sports Illustrated Studios & 101 Studios has partnered with future Hall of Famer Stephen Curry and his Unanimous Media to produce a narrative film and a documentary about the All Star Café. The projects will be based on Jon Wertheim’s 2020 Sports Illustrated article.

The All Star Café opened in New York City on December 18, 1995, with much fanfare as the themed eatery set up to be for sports what the Hard Rock Cafe is for music. It opened with a flurry of paparazzi, red carpet and a slew of A-list celebrities and athletes, but the final buzzer sounded on September 23, 2007, when it shuttered under the cloud of bankruptcy. That final chapter included the largest sports memorabilia heist in history cooked up by a group of knuckleheaded kitchen staffers, in what has been hailed as a Coen Brothers Fargo-esque criminal event.

Looking back, it's somewhat astonishing that Tim Burton's 1989 film "Batman" was as big a hit as it was. Audiences were, of course, allured by the fact that 1989 offered the first time the character had graced a movie screen in 23 years and were likely intrigued by the fact that Batman was getting a massive budget and full-bore studio treatment. But the resulting film was odd in a way that wouldn't necessarily appeal to audiences today. Burton modeled the visuals of "Batman" after angular, shadow-filled German expressionist films like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," and cribbed its tone from bleak, nihilistic film noir pictures. The message of film noir is that there are no more heroes and morality is dead, and Burton had the temerity to drop a superhero into the middle of it.

Exclusive: Smokehouse TV and 101 Studios have made a multiyear overall deal for original scripted and unscripted content for television.

This formalizes a relationship that got underway with Smokehouse Pictures and 101 Studios already teaming on the upcoming docuseries about the decades-long abuse scandal in the athletic department at Ohio State University. Based on the Sports Illustrated article by Jon Wertheim, this docuseries will be distributed by HBO. Its focus is on the victims of Richard Strauss, a former sports physician at Ohio State who’s accused of sexually abusing more than 300 athletes over decades working at and with the university. Oscar and Emmy winner Eva Orner (Taxi to the Dark Side) directed the feature length docu.

60 Minutes is TV ‘s oldest and still most-watched newsmag, having launched in 1968. Its current lineup of hosts includes Lesley Stahl, who’s been with the show since 1991; Scott Pelley (since 2003) and Bill Whitaker (2014). Cecilia Vega is slated to join the show in March. The true-crime docuseries 48 Hours focuses on crime and justice cases and has been Saturday’s No. 1 nonsports primetime series for 17 consecutive seasons.

Jon Wertheim knows just how intense sports rivalries can get.

The author, Sports Illustrated executive editor and 60 Minutes correspondent has dedicated years to covering one of the most legendary rivalries in all of sports — Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal — through his work at Si as well as in the 2009 book, Strokes of Genius, and again in the 2018 Tennis Channel documentary adaptation that scored two Emmy nominations.

For a follow-up, Wertheim teamed with collaborators that included Michael Hughes’ Dlp Media, director Peter Karl (The Long Game) and Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons to shift the focus from the tennis court to the gridiron to investigate one of college football’s most fiery and longest-running rivalries: Ohio State vs. Michigan. In a significant move, ABC News chief White House correspondent Cecilia Vega is departing the network to join CBS News, where she will be a correspondent on 60 Minutes.

Vega, a veteran TV anchor and correspondent, has previously anchored shows like Good Morning America and the weekend edition of ABC’s World News Tonight. She will begin reporting for CBS in the spring and will continue to be based out of Washington D.C.

Now in its 55th season, 60 Minutes is the most-watched news program on TV and one of the most-watched non-NFL broadcasts (though it often benefits from an NFL lead-in).

The show’s lineup of correspondents includes some of the most recognizable names in TV news, including CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell, former CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, Jon Wertheim, Sharyn Alfonsi, and TV legends Lesley Stahl and Bill Whitaker.

Cecilia Vega, who has been with ABC News for more than a decade, will jump to a new correspondent role on CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” leaving behind an influential role covering the White House for the Disney-backed news operation.

Her move marks a rare effort to expand the hub of on-air personnel devoted to “60 Minutes.” In the recent past, executive producer Bill Owens has worked to augment his staff, elevating correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Jon Wertheim to full-time status and trying to develop a team devoted to a separate streaming effort tied to the show, an initiative that was ultimately scrapped. Pluto, the ad-supported streaming site operated by parent company Paramount Global, does feature a channel that features curated and archival material from the long-running program.

In an interview, Owens said he has been impressed by Vega’s range of reportorial experience as well as her time spent in print journalism.

There’s a last-minute change brewing at “60 Minutes.”

When the venerable CBS newsmagazine launches its 55th season this Sunday, viewers may notice a twist at the end of the hour. The show is debuting a new end segment, something that its top producer hopes will resonate with crowds as much as previous codas like “Point/Counterpoint” or the musings of Andy Rooney did in their respective eras.

“We have tried different things to fill the space, and they felt a little unsatisfying,” executive producer Bill Owens tells Variety. “There wasn’t a consistency to it. I ended up giving that time back to the stories and the correspondents, so they would each have 20 to 30 seconds more. They were all very happy to have that time, but it felt like something was missing.”

Exclusive: Olivia DeJonge (Elvis) has been set as the female lead for The Trashers—the latest feature from Sundance prize-winning director Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), which will have her starring alongside David Harbour and Cooper Hoffman.

The film will center on Hoffman’s character Aj—the teenage son of Connecticut trash magnate and Genovese crime family associate Jimmy Galante (Harbour). In 2004, Galante bought the city’s minor-league hockey team and assigned A.J. to run it. The two had bonded over their love for the game when A.J. played, with his crooked father hoping to hold onto their bond. The kid did well, watching the team gain notoriety for its rough and violent style of play but also developing a wide fan base as it started to win more and more games. The team’s success and fame all came to an abrupt end with Galante’s arrest on 72 criminal charges.

Cooper Hoffman has found his next role in Cooper Raiff’s “The Trashers,” playing son to David Harbour’s father.

The “Cha Cha Real Smooth” writer-director’s third film takes a page from the real story of Jimmy Galante (Harbour), a Connecticut trash tycoon and member of the Genovese crime family who purportedly inspired the character Tony Soprano. In 2004, Galante took over his city’s minor-league hockey team and put his teenage son A.J. (Hoffman) in charge of running it. Under A.J.’s command, the team quickly gains notoriety for its violent but effective playing style, racking up one win after another. However, it all comes crashing down when Galante is arrested on 72 criminal charges.
