Crews have started filming a new sci-fi drama set in the Doctor Who universe. The five-part miniseries, called “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” brings Unit into a conflict with an ancient sea-dwelling species. Showrunner Russell T. Davies revealed details about the project during a recent interview.
The series centers on an international crisis as an old species emerges from the ocean to endanger humanity. Unit, a military organization that investigates alien threats, works to stop the sea creatures. Filming started three weeks ago in Cardiff, Wales and will continue in a single block through December.
Davies explained the challenges of this approach, noting scenes from the first episode may not film until close to wrap. “Normally episodes would divide filming into blocks, but this is one continuous shoot. So an actor’s first appearance could be the last scene of the last episode,” he said. The production...

Netflix unveiled the first big data dump of 2024 on Thursday, and the engagement report for everything watched in the first half of the year proved that subscribers really love three things: Millie Bobby Brown, sharks and animated movies.
Some of the data points were unsurprising – we knew Brown’s “Damsel” was a huge hit, and indeed it was the most-watched film for the first half of the year. But others were interesting, like just how heavily Netflix’s streaming partnership with Universal factors into what’s being watched and the relative success of Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” films.
Below, we thumb through the biggest winners on the film side of the data dump.

The BBC and Disney+'s Doctor Who partnership is well underway. The rebooted series aired earlier this year to mixed reviews; there were superb entries like "73 Yards" as well as more disappointing episodes like "Space Babies." The future of the partnership is up in the air. But at the least, Doctor Who will return for season 2 on Christmas Day, with Ncuti Gatwa in the lead role as the Fifthteenth Doctor. Also, a new spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, has officially entered production.
The Whoniverse has had a number of spinoffs over the years. The most successful ones include the dark and gritty Torchwood and the child-friendly The Sarah Jane Adventures. This latest is the first spinoff produced that's able to access Disney's vast resources. Created by Russell T. Davies, The War Between the Land and the Sea is a Unit-focused show. The Doctor Who franchise is currently in the beginnings of a wholly new era. Showrunner Russell T. Davies is back pulling the strings, and Disney is investing heavily into the next generation of the Whoniverse. Season 1 aired this year to a mixed reception, with the next season set to premiere on Christmas Day and into 2025. Furthermore, there's an all-new spinoff being made: The War Between Land and the Sea.
The War Between Land and the Sea doesn't have a release date yet. Indeed, there's a lot about it we don't know. What we know so far is that it is all about the Sea Devils, one of the Doctor's oldest enemies; they date back to the 1960s. The Doctor himself will not be involved. Rather, it'll be a Unit-focused series. The cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey. Both Jemma Redgrave (Kate Lethbridge-Stewart) and Alexander Devrient (Colonel Ibrahim) will reprise their roles.

Disney has hailed Doctor Who as a “really good fit” for Disney+ amid industry chatter over whether its ambitious co-production deal with the BBC has been a success.
Liam Keelan, Disney’s SVP of original productions in Emea, said the company was “happy to have” the Ncuti Gatwa sci-fi series on Disney+ outside of the UK.
The Disney chief did not, however, commit to renewing the BBC co-production deal beyond next year’s season, which is overseen by showrunner Russell T Davies.
Keelan said: “[Doctor Who] is a fabulous series. Obviously, in the UK it’s fully BBC, rightly so. We take rest of world rights. But really, really happy to have it. I think just, the quirkiness of it, the fact that it’s in that sci-fi world and when you think about what Disney offers in other regards, I think it feels like a really good fit to me.

An McU-style Whoniverse – one giant pulsating Cthulhu-like Doctor Who monster with multiple tentacles and limbs stretching in every direction – has always been the plan. Showrunner Russell T Davies has made no secret of that. He wants Doctor Who to be everything, everywhere, all at once, and why shouldn’t it be?

Exclusive: Sally Wainwright’s Renegade Nell will not make it past a first season on Disney+.
The series about a quick-witted outlaw in 18th century England, which was the storied British scribe’s first for a streamer, launched several months back. We are told it hasn’t reached the threshold for a Disney+ renewal based on several metrics. Cast, creatives and production staff at the show’s producer Lookout Point have been told.
Renegade Nell was unveiled three years ago with fanfare and was one of the highest profile series to be commissioned out of Disney+’s UK office.
Starring Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland, the show followed the eponymous Nell, who finds herself framed for murder and unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in England. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. Cast also included Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed and Joely Richardson.

Doctor Who will tap into its environmentalist history in the new five-part BBC One/Disney+ spinoff announced by showrunner Russell T Davies at Sdcc 2024. The long-rumoured Sea Devils show will concern “a race that lives beneath the oceans,” who awaken to see their underwater home in a perilous state due to humanity’s actions.
“We have wrecked the place,” explained Davies at last Friday’s Hall H Doctor Who panel, “and it is war.”
Fighting that war “on an epic scale” will be Unit, headed up in its current incarnation by Kate Lethbridge Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and her secret honey/Squad Five colonel Christopher Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient). They’ll be joined by two as-yet-unknown lead characters played by Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, alongside others yet to be announced.

The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land and the Sea will begin filming later this year. Here are the details.
When Russell T Davies came back to Doctor Who, one of the first things he mentioned was the idea of building a Whoniverse, where Doctor Who and associated spin-offs would all come under one banner.
The Whoniverse launched on iPlayer last year, and it included all surviving episodes of Classic Who and every episode of New Who, plus all the spin-offs like Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and even K-9 and Company. Every episode of Confidential is available to watch, along with a wealth of material from the BBC archive. Tales of the Tardis was a lovely treat too.
But what Doctor Who fans have been wondering ever since Davies returned was when he would launch a new spin-off. Rumours have been rife for months,...

The Doctor Who panel at Comic-Con was super cool! It had been forever since the show was in Hall H, but the wait was totally worth it. Showrunner Russell T. Davies and stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson came out to chat with fans. They spilled some major details about what’s coming up for our favorite Time Lord.
One big announcement was a new spin-off series called “Doctor Who: The War Between the Land and the Sea.” It will feature some huge stars like Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Russell Tovey, and Alexander Devrient battling classic monsters, the Sea Devils! The five-part show focuses on them waging war on humanity because of how we’ve messed up the oceans. It sounds epic!
Fans also got a sneak peek at this year’s Christmas special called “Joy to the World.” It stars Nicola Coughlan, who you may know from “Bridgerton,” as a character named Joy.

The Whoniverse is expanding—and bringing back some very familiar faces in doing so. It was announced at Doctor Who San Diego Comic-Con panel that a new spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, is coming to Disney+. However, they will not be playing those characters. “This is not Midshipman Frame teaming up with Tish Jones, which I would write actually, why not? Big Finish can do that,” Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies said during the panel. It won’t be the first time that actors played ...

When Sébastien Raybaud founded Anton in 2011 (as Anton Capital Entertainment), his first major deal proved to be groundbreaking for the European film industry.
Although institutional slate financing had been a regular practice among U.S. studios (Raybaud himself helped arrange several deals during his time on the film arm of investment bank Société Générale in London), it just wasn’t being done on the continent.
“There was a disconnect,” he says, pointing to the money that was available in the U.S. compared to Europe. So Anton was originally set up to “marry big investors with the industry.” It did just that with a €150 million (($160 million) three-year slate-financing deal with StudioCanal using U.S. fund Falcon, with the cash injection helping bankroll both the hugely successful “Paddington” and “Shaun the Sheep” franchises, kickstarting a period of significant growth for the Vivendi-owned studio.

We’ve been waiting months to find out whether or not Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy) has actually landed the role of James Bond – but in the meantime, he’s working on the race-against-the-clock thriller Fuze, which is currently filming in London and has Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie at the helm.
