Watch out — Esther's back! Having been introduced to the world in Jaume Collet-Serra's 2009 chiller Orphan and then given the prequel treatment with 2022's Orphan: First Kill, Isabelle Fuhrman's modern horror icon Esther Coleman is gearing up to return to our screens and wreak havoc upon a new unsuspecting family. Per Variety's exclusive reporting, Orphan 3 is officially in the works at Lionsgate and Dark Castle Entertainment, with the project set to sell at the American Film Market next week.

And whilst plot details for the latest movie remain under lock and key for now at least, Dark Castle Entertainment co-ceo Norman Golightly is already fuelling the Orphan hype train. After Orphan: First Kill aka Orphan 2 was released in theaters and on streaming back in August 2022, fans were wondering if a third film would eventually happen. On December 2023, an Orphan 3 was announced to be in development. Now, we have confirmation that a third installment is officially in the works.
Dark Castle Entertainment, the production company behind the first and second films (Orphan and Orphan: First Kill), returns to produce with David Coggeshall writing the script and William Brent Bell directing. Coggeshall wrote the screenplay for the second movie, while Bell directed that same film.
According to Variety, Dark Castle Entertainment will be producing Orphan 3 alongside Alex Mace of Gnosis Films. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote the screenplay for Orphan and helped write the story for Orphan: First Kill, has signed on as an executive producer. There's something wrong with Esther ... again! In the biggest "hell yeah" news of the day, Variety is reporting that a third film in the "Orphan" franchise is on the way, and Isabelle Fuhrman will once again play Esther, everyone's favorite killer "kid." Fuhrman made her Esther debut in Jaume Collet-Serra's delightfully lurid 2009 horror-thriller "Orphan," about a couple (played by scream queen Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) who adopt a 9-year-old girl from Russia. The child, Esther, seems polite and sweet ... at first. Eventually, the audience sees that Esther is a full-blown psycho, willing to kill anyone who gets in her way. But this was no mere "killer kid" horror movie, folks! In a whopper of a twist, it's revealed that Esther is actually Leena Klammer, a woman in her 30s who only appears to be a child due to hypopituitarism.
The end of "Orphan" saw Esther/Leena defeated and killed,...

The fact that we received a prequel to the 2009 thriller Orphan in 2022 was mind-boggling – especially since the surprisingly entertaining Orphan: First Kill still starred Isabelle Fuhrman as Leena Klammer / Esther, an adult serial killer from Estonia who is able to pass herself off as a 9 year old kid. Looking 9 was easy for Fuhrman when she made the first movie, because she was a child at the time… but now she’s an adult, and the filmmakers had to try to figure out how to make her look like a kid again for the prequel. It worked well enough, and the movie went over well enough with viewers (you can read our review Here), that we started hearing rumblings of an Orphan 3 around the end of last year – and now it’s official. Lionsgate has announced, via Variety, that they’ve officially given the greenlight to Orphan 3!

Orphan’s Isabelle Fuhrman is great as a bored quarter-lifer taking on tough-guy Don Johnson, who is having a lot of fun prowling the corridors in search of his dubious deposit
Here is a fairly watchable thriller about a fine arts and philosophy graduate called Laurie (Isabelle Fuhrman), who is turning 25 and facing a quarter-life crisis. She’s going nowhere fast in a job managing a storage facility in the middle of nowhere, with few customers and fewer uses for that liberal arts degree. Her boyfriend is ticked off by her refusal to spread her wings and join him in Nashville, but she’s got family issues tying her to the place, issues that are about to pale in comparison with the problems she will face courtesy of some tough types rocking up to make her life a living hell.

How blessed are we to have a whole six hours of Kevin Costner’s mythopoetic Horizon already make their way to (some) audiences, especially when this project has been on his wish list since 1988? I often try to demystify festival viewing experiences by supplying an honest, sometimes critical lens through which a reader can see the cracks in their glossy surfaces. Nevertheless, in the case of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, I’d own every bit of privilege that brought me to its Venice premiere––in a rather small venue, on the very last afternoon, with little fanfare––not least because Costner’s multi-chapter saga is so difficult to see on the big screen. It’s not just the scale of storytelling or the fact that the Hollywood legend sponsored a huge chunk of its production himself, not the runtime and two more planned installments to (hopefully) come––it’s...

We were following news of the cat and mouse thriller Unit 234, which is now going by the extended title Unit 234: The Lockup, closely when the film went into production back in 2022… but then it dropped off the radar for a couple of years. Now it’s ready to make its way out into the world, and while we don’t have information on a North American release at this time, we do know that the film is going to receive a digital release in the UK on September 30th, courtesy of Signature Entertainment. In anticipation of that release, a trailer for Unit 234: The Lockup has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

"We're all guilty of something." That might be true, but so what? Signature Ent. has revealed the official UK trailer for Unit 234: The Lock Up, a "tense white-knuckle thriller" from filmmaker Andy Tennant. It's currently set for a VOD release in the UK this October, though there's no US date confirmed yet. After the shocking discovery of an unconscious man in a locked unit, the lone employee of a remote storage facility must fight to survive the night against a ruthless gang, dead set on retrieving their precious cargo – at any cost. Who is this guy locked in there anyway, what do they want with him? Starring Isabelle Fuhrman, Don Johnson, and Jack Huston, along with Christopher James Baker, Anirudh Pisharody, and James DuMont. Why does this look like another Saw spin-off movie? Definitely a direct-to-video concept despite this cast coming aboard to try and make it actually seem like a legitimate movie.

As vast and flat as its title, “Horizon: An American Saga” can carry many descriptions. Call it hokey or homespun, old-school or out-of-touch, all would apply. But don’t you dare say wistful, because star and director and producer and co-screenwriter Kevin Costner has not leveraged a good part of his fortune for mourning.
Costner has come to celebrate those old myths, not bury them – and that lends “Chapter 2” an unintentionally elegiac quality. Tumbling down the Lido once this year’s Venice Film Festival has become a ghost-town, and with an already canceled theatrical release, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” stands more as a monument to unmet ambitions, to the grand swings-and-misses more often than not left out of the Great American Narrative.

After debuting his Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 in Cannes last May, Kevin Costner is on the Lido today for the world premiere of the second installment in the Manifest Destiny epic. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, directed by and starring Costner alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Isabelle Fuhrman, Luke Wilson and more, will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival this afternoon. Prior to that, Costner met with the press.
Costner wrote the, so far, two-part epic, with co-writer Jon Baird and also produces under his Territory Pictures banner. A third and fourth film are scripted and ready to shoot. The Oscar winner has a lot of skin in the game on this passion project. He previously told Deadline that he’s projected to pay $98 million himself for the first three films, and that financing the fourth will take it to over $100 million.

There’s an enormous amount to describe, but very little to actually say about Kevin Costner’s bedraggled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2,” the second of a planned four installments in his sprawling, multistranded Western, that plays, after the muted reception of “Chapter 1” in Cannes, out of competition on the final day of Venice. Doubling down on the first chapter’s intermittent triumphs but also on its grievous structural issues, it is an exercise in contradictions: incident-packed yet oddly sedate; replete with characters new and returning, yet largely lacking in compelling characterization; and, running to over three hours, simply too long a film to be so jarringly abrupt.
It’s hardly a surprise that it picks up where the last left off, given the last left off with, essentially, a preview-reel of part two. Viewers bewildered by that montage’s final image — a lingering close-up of a mustachioed Giovanni Ribisi,...

Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 is the latest installment in writer-director-star Kevin Costner’s planned four-part film series, which opened in the U.S. this past July to many poor reviews, bemused viewer reaction and disappointing box office numbers.
This second three-hour tranche of Wild West-themed soap-operatic drama, premiering at Venice, has basically the same problems as its predecessor: too much setup and not enough payoff; jagged editing that only highlights the lack of harmony between its disparate narrative strands; and cliché-tinged production values that often make it feel corny and old-fashioned, and not in a good way. And that’s allowing for the assumption that it’s aimed at the geriatric market who loved Costner’s pseudo-revisionist Western blockbuster Dances With Wolves back in the day and his return turn to Western-adjacent form with recent TV hit Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner‘s period Western Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has a streaming date.
The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.
Following the film disappointing at the box office — Chapter 1, which runs three hours and one minute, opened to just $11 million over the June 28-30 weekend — Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to pause on releasing Horizon: Chapter 2. The second installment was pulled from a planned Aug. 16 theater release in order to give audiences the opportunity to discover the first installment on PVOD and Max.
Chapter 1 debuted in the home on Premium VOD July 16 while it remained in theaters, but at that time, a Max date had not been announced. The switch-up in what was an ambitious release plan was in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience, as the first film sports a $100 million price tag.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, the first installment of an ambitious Civil War epic from Kevin Costner, has been set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, August 23.
The film hits streaming following its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, which was regarded as a misfire for a big-budget title, at a gross of just over $34 million. While Warner Bros initially intended to release Chapter 2 just two months later, on August 16 — in an unusual move — the sequel’s release has since been delayed for an indefinite period, the hope being to give audiences who have not yet caught up with Chapter 1 a chance to do so. Chapter 2 will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, with Chapter 1 playing there earlier in the day.

Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.
Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.
Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.
It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.

The latest from Kevin Costner is a bold and beautiful feature. The three-hour film takes a few chances, and tells three different stories about early America. All the characters are rich, and feature one impressive cast list. You have Costner with Abbey Lee in one story that is especially charming. Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington lead another with a powerful introduction to both Miller’s character, as well as Georgia MacPhail as the daughter. Both are fantastic. The third story includes Luke Miller, Ella Hunt, and Isabelle Fuhrman. The cast also includes Jamie Campbell Bower who is terrific as a bit of villain and too many others to list here. As someone who appreciates a cinematic western, Horizon: Chapter 1 satisfied (read our review right here). I’m looking forward to the second film in August.

“I make movies for men,” Kevin Costner said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast alongside members of the Horizon: An America Saga cast. “That’s what I do. But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters. That’s how I’ve conducted my career. I think that’s why I have a good following. I thank you women for dragging your men here. It was a Western after all. I just can’t conceive of a movie without having [strong women].“

Kevin Costner recently joined his “Horizon: An American Saga” cast for a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, and he said his planned four-movie saga differs from many Western films that have come before in that its female characters “drive the story in every plot line.” Costner, who co-wrote the franchise with Jon Baird, said he “couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve a woman” while shaping the story.
“Horizon” chronicles the journey of several characters during and after the Civil War as they settle the American West. Kevin Costner stars in the film opposite a sprawling ensemble cast, which includes Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abbey Lee and Ella Hunt. He told the “Happy Sad Confused” audience that he is aware his directorial efforts skew more towards men in their appeal, but he said strong women is what he’s most interested in.

In the more than 20 years that have passed since Kevin Costner last stood behind the camera and delivered his third feature as a director, 2003's well-received "Open Range," a lot has changed within the studio system. For one thing, there are fewer independent studios in operation these days compared to the turn of the century, when the very idea of Disney absorbing 20th Century Fox in a hostile takeover or Paramount Pictures desperately seeking a merger would've felt laughable. For another, the advent of streaming has completely upended the status quo, transforming bravura spectacles crafted specifically for theaters — even one directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola — into an exception rather than the rule. And, of course, ever-volatile moviegoer habits combined with a once-in-a-generation pandemic have further convinced industry bigwigs to embrace risk-averse strategies, spurning auteur-driven passion projects in favor of the safer shores of superheroes and other franchises.

Kevin Costner spent $38 million of his own money to finance his new Western film Horizon: An American Saga. Well, the early tracking numbers are in, and the news is not good: the first part of Horizon is currently projected to make $12 million in its opening weekend of release on June 28th (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. Now, decades later, he’s finally set to unveil the first part of what he ultimately hopes to be a four-installment film franchise that he will write, direct, and star in himself. The total budget for the first two films sits around $100 million, with Costner himself having personally contributed $38 million to the overall budget (apparently by mortgaging his house). The remaining chunk was reportedly financed through foreign sales.

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Kevin Costner has been a very committed actor who continues to give his all with every film he does. His breakout role in The Untouchables led him to many acclaimed performances in films like Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and A Perfect World among others. He has also established himself as a great filmmaker directing two impressive westerns Dances With Wolves and Open Range.

Unfortunately, it received mediocre reviews which put into question the fate of the remaining three films, in addition to the actor/director finding problems filming parts 3 and 4.

In the entertainment industry, where blockbusters are funded by rich billionaires with deep pockets, Kevin Costner is standing out from the crowd by putting his own money into his passion project. The veteran actor and filmmaker, 69, recently revealed that he has invested a staggering $38 million of his own money into his new Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga.

Kevin Costner got candid about partly self-financing his new movie, “Horizon: An American Saga,” at a Cannes Film Festival press conference on Monday.
Costner put much of his own fortune into making the $100 million-plus film, including mortgaging his ranch. He directs and stars in the film, which he also produced and co-wrote.
When asked about his struggle to finance the film, Costner said, “I don’t know why it was so hard.”
“You saw the movie. I don’t know why it was so hard to get people to believe in the movie that I wanted to make,” he continued. “You know, I don’t think my movie is better than anybody else’s movie, but I don’t think anybody else’s movie is better than mine. I don’t go out into the world with something I don’t think is good.”
